William Sneed FamilyGeneration 2 (con't)"A family tradition
states that Zachariah Sneed, "died in a tent occupied jointly with
his eldest son, after a forced march during the Revolutionary War."
This tradition is apparently false. Zachariah Sneed died in 1783
and the Battle of Yorktown, which effectively ended the American
Revolution, was fought in 1781. "It has also been claimed that
Zachariah Sneed was the son of William Sneed. This is not true. He
was a son of John and Susannah (Poindexter) Sneed, of Hanover Co.,
VA...." Source: E mail correspondence from Beverly Golden

of pneumonia after a forced march in the rain from Danville, VA to
be at the battle of Yorktown; m. Martha `Patty' Nance, who died in
1783. At the death of Zachariah Snead, the court summoned William
Snead from Abbysville in Lunenburg Co. (now Charlotte Co., VA).
After Zachariah's death, his children were bound out by the vestry
of Camden Parish, Pittsylvania Co. VA to their grandfather _William
Snead_, who subsequently brought them to NC. However, IGI records,
among others, assert that Zachariah Snead was born in 1726 in
Henrico Co. VA, s/o William Snead, and that he married in that
county in 1764, Martha `Patsy' Nance. "A _Robert Snead was born 23
Jan. 1760, Amelia Co. VA, where he enlisted in the Rev. War and
continued to live until 1790, when he moved to Wake Co. NC, where
he applied [for a pension] in Nov. 1832. A _James Nance b. in
Amelia Co. 02 Feb. 1762 stated he knew the soldier well. _Robert

"SNEED, JOSEPH PERKINS (1804-1881). Joseph P. Sneed, pioneer
Methodist preacher, son of James and Bethenia (Perkins) Sneed, was
born in Davidson County, Tennessee, near Nashville, on January 10,
1804. He ranks among a small group of men who laid the foundations
of Methodism in the Republic of Texas.qv He also devoted a decade
of his ministry--far more than any other white preacher during the
development of Texas statehood--to black slaves. He was converted
at a camp meeting in 1824 and joined the Mississippi Conference of
the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1829. After serving his
probationary period on circuits in Mississippi and Alabama, he was
ordained a deacon in 1831, admitted into full connection, and
appointed to a circuit in Louisiana. He was ordained an elder in
1833 by Bishop John Emory. In the summer of 1834, during his
ministry in Louisiana, he assisted Rev. Henry Stephensonqv in a
famous revival at Samuel Doak McMahan's place near San Augustine,
Texas. As a result of that experience, Sneed volunteered for
service in the newly established Texas Mission in December 1838.
Bishop Thomas A. Morris appointed him to Brazoria in the Texas
Mission District of the Mississippi Conference and sent a letter by
him to Littleton Fowler,qv the superintendent of the mission,
declaring: "We have sent you Brother Sneed, a man who is not afraid
to die or sleep in the woods." Traveling by horseback, Sneed
entered Texas at Gaines Ferryqv on February 8, 1839, and reported
to Fowler at McMahan's. Fowler changed Sneed's appointment to the
Montgomery Circuit, which comprised all the territory between the
Brazos and Trinity rivers from San Felipe on the south to the site
of present-day Waco. Four months later, Fowler increased Sneed's
labors to include the Washington Circuit, thus adding the territory
from Houston and Texana to Bastrop and Caldwell. Sneed's succeeding
appointments included the following circuits: Nashville, 1839-40;
Victoria, 1840-41; Liberty, 1841-42; Washington, 1842-43; and
Rutersville, 1843-44. Sneed took an honorable location for ten
years, while he farmed near Gay Hill in Washington County and
subsequently above Port Sullivan in Milam County. In December 1855
he was readmitted to the Texas Conference and began his unique
ministry to black slaves at the Port Royal African Mission
(1855-61, 1862-65). He served the Lampasas-Florence Circuit in
1861-62 and the White Rock Circuit in 1866-67. He superannuated in
1867 and lived the remainder of his life on his farm. Sneed married
Achsah Bond Harris on October 12, 1842, in Nashville, Tennessee,
and they had three children. She died on January 15, 1860. He died
on November 21, 1881, at his son's home in Milam County and was
buried in the family graveyard. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Oscar Murray Addison

; killed at Perryville, Kentucky, October, 1862. Josiah W. Nance,
branch, was born December n, 1837. Was captain of scouts in General
Forest's command, in 1862, 3 and 4. He was betrayed while bearing
important papers, and shot to death by the Union forces, June 10,
1864. The following letter speaks of the brothers Nashville,
Tennessee, July 31, 1903. M1ss Bethenia H. Nance, Murfreesboro,
Tennessee. Dear Miss Nance: I received your letter of July date,
asking of me a sketch of your two brothers, William Nance and
Josiah W. Nance, two young men who were members of my original
company I of the 2nd Tennessee infantry regiment of the Confederate
states army. My first recollection of seeing your two brothers was
when they came to Nashville from Murfreesboro about the first of
May, 1861, and enlisted in my old company when we were encamped in
the fair grounds at Nashville, just before leaving for Virginia.
They were attractive, gainly looking young men. While under my
immediate command, which was for the first year of the war and
until after the battle of Shiloh, they were model soldiers.
Intelligent, courageous, of good habits, and always ready and
willing for duty. They were upright, moral, and discreet young men.
They were generally found together in and out of camps. I never
knew two more devoted brothers. They were so sedate and dignif1ed
that the boys in the company, by way of distinction and in
pleasantry, called William "the doctor," and J. W. " the judge."
They were under me during the fighting at Acquia Creek and the
battles of Bull Run and Shiloh. I was then separated from my old
regiment until it became a part of my division late in the war.
Meanwhile, William Nance was killed in the battle of Perryville.
After his death J. W. Nance was transferred to cavalry (I do not
know to what immediate command), and was killed in battle, June 10,
1864, under Forest. As patriots these two brothers became soldiers
in defense of their country,- as soldiers they died in defense of
their country, and are to-day numbered among the martyrs who gave
up their lives in defense of the just and righteous cause of our
southland, Very respectfully and truly yours, Wm. B. Bate"

"Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaire of CONSTANTINE PERKINS
NANCE Introduction -- Among the "Questionnaires" administered to
Tennessee Civil War veterans in the early part of this century was
one by Constantine Perkins Nance. It represents a unique source of
information about this particular Nance line. However, readers
should be aware that it cannot be considered to be as "pure" a
source of information as some earlier records. The first major
Nance Genealogy, "The Nance Memorial", had been published almost 20
years before this "Questionnaire" was given, and there are certain
responses that persuade me that it is likely that Constantine P.
Nance may have seen that book (in particular, the answer to
question 9 is very close to what appears in the "Nance Memorial").
I believe that the "Nance Memorial" was in error in some
significant areas respecting the line of David Nance, from whom
Constantine was descended, and I believe that these errors may be
perpetuated here. For example, there is still no confirmation that
David Nance served in the Revolutionary War, and the matter of
French ancestry is also doubtful to some extent. This having been
said, the "Questionnaire" still remains a wonderful piece of
genealogical information. Constantine Perkins Nance's brother James
W. Nance moved to Milam Co. TX with Constantine prior to the Civil
War. He remained there, while Constantine returned to Tennessee,
where he lived out his life.
