THE POST

The Post Reporter, Winner of John Sloan Newsletter Award 2020

Greetings!

This month’s Commanders message is an introduction to who I am.

I first joined the American Legion in Sep-tember 1991. Upon returning from overseas and back to Reisterstown in particular, from serving in the Persian Gulf War and still in uniform, I met Doug Lawrence and

Brian Griffin at the then fledgling Reisterstown Festival. Both of these men saw me and actively recruited me to join Post 116. And...I did! That was thirty years ago. Time really flies because, I remember that day like it was just last Saturday. Since then, I have been a member of 116 for 30 consecutive years. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have bought a life membership then. In any event, since that time, I have been active in our post, in one form or another, every year since.

Recently, I have been the post’s Judge Advocate for the past five years and I have been an executive committee member for same five years. I wrote our post’s standing rules and participat-ed with the Department of Maryland American Legion in writ-ing our By-laws. With that said, I like to think “I know the law” as it pertains to the American Legion.

I decided to run for Commander this year because…. “it was time”. I am qualified for the job and we all need and deserve a Commander who possess real leadership and won’t quit when the going gets tough!

To that end; this attitude of accepting or taking a mission and seeing it through to the end, regardless of any obstacles, was instilled in me after having joined the United States Marine Corps and serving 15 years in uniform as a combat engineer.

Marines never quit.

Over the years I have become a fat old man but my drive and esprit de corps has never changed in fact, it has strengthened.

To all, know that I am new to this job and will make mistakes. But, this I promise you; that is you WILL get my very best this coming year as your commander. I do have an agenda for the post that I feel will strengthen us as 116 legionaries and mem-bers and should make our post the envy of other legion posts. I will disclose my agenda in more detail in subsequent news let-ters.

There you have it. So, let’s have fun and enjoy ourselves this coming year as officers and members of Reisterstown Post 116..

Yours in the bond;

Kevin Betskoff Commander 2021-2022

Message

The summer is here, and it is hot. Come on in and spend your time in the cool air with cold beers! Baseball is on, football is soon and hopefully we will have more events for you around the corner. But most of all, we want to see you at the Post!

The new 2022 cards are now out and available. Jerry has them and will most likely have them during Ace of Diamonds and SAL meetings. Be sure to get your membership dues in now while they are low. It not only helps our numbers early, but it saves you a few dollars. If you know anyone who would like to be a member, let them know they can sign up for the new year!

The Reisterstown Festival is on this year! We will be in the parade as usual so if you want to walk with us in the parade let us know. I also believe we will be having vehicles for people to ride in if they are unable to do the entire parade walking. I hope to have more information on that soon. We will also be running a booth at the festival for the entire post. If you would like to spend some time manning the booth and share some information with festival goers, please let me know. We will be setting up a sheet soon.

We were able to present our check to Jeannie Andrews of the Franklin Woodland Trail at our July meeting and she was ex-tremely excited. We awarded her a grand total of $1,200 and she promised to put our name and logo on whatever they used the money for. Again, thanks to everyone who came out and made that event happen.

Please keep an eye out for events as we always need volun-teers. Also, if you have ideas for events that we can do, please let us know at the meeting so we can discuss them or let me know so I can bring the ideas up if you cannot attend. No idea or suggestion is ever a bad idea. Sometimes they can spur on other ideas!

I want to thank everyone who came to the Memorial Day

Bucket collection that happened in June. We had to miss the

original due to rain but that did not stop our members from

standing, and sometimes wandering, out on Reisterstown

Road collecting donations. We made over $1,100 in a few

hours, which shows you how much good can be done if we put

our minds to it. Keep an eye out for upcoming events if this is

a thing you want to try yourself!

(SAL continued on Page 4)

...from the

Squadron

Hello everyone,

The heat of summer is here, wow! First, I have to say goodbye to our 2nd vice president, Susan Strayer. She has retired and moved to Delaware, but will continue to be a member at 116. We had our officers installed last month, they are as follows: 1st Vice President - Robin Miller, 2nd Vice President - Christine Moore, Finance - Faith Insley, Secretary - Carol Carder, Sgt, at Arms - Sharon Hurtt, Chaplain - Theresa Huntington, Historian - Peggy Wills. The Executive Committee: Tina Shipton, Mary Wolff and Bonnie Hudson. Please come up and say hi to our new officers. Robin and her team of cackles are still work-ing hard, get your foursome in to show your sup-port. Tina did an outstanding job with her basket, making $1500.00 for Soldiers Angels - Thank you all very much. If you missed the drawing on July 3rd, boy did you miss a good time had by all with good food. We will have our next meeting on August 26 where we hear all of the great stories about the golf tournament and the Coach Bag drawing. Good luck to all. Can’t wait to meet again,

Terri Armacost, President 2021-2022 [email protected]

It is important that we are kept informed when our members are sick or injured. If you know of anyone, please contact the Post, unit or Squadron with information on their condition so that we may send ‘Get Well’ cards or visit them. We also need to be informed when one of our Legion Family passes on. Please let us know so that sympathy cards or donations to charities may be sent in their name.

In these days of COVID-19, the Post would like to send prayers out to all in our Post 116 family and community who may be battling this disease. It is good to see that the number of cases is diminishing

It is sad to report of the sudden passing of Jeffrey Rizzo,a fire fighter in Louden County, VA. Jeff was the son of Post, SAL & ALR member John Riz-zo and his wife Marylu. Our deepest sympathies go to John and Marylu. We know he will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Squadron member, Rollins Brown, has passed on to Detachment Everlasting. He was a new member, not known to many of our members, but will be missed by many who knew him.

Please Keep Terri Armacost (President ALA) in your prayers as she recovers from a broken ankle. Hang in there Terri, were all with you!

HELP WANTED! for

FLAT TRACK RACING at TIMONIUM FAIRGROUNDS July 31; August 7, 14, 21 December 4, 11 Please contact Riders if you can help

As the readers of my Veteran Victor column are aware, I have a radio call-in show on WCBM on Sat-urday evenings. The show deals with answering questions concerning veteran’s benefits; what’s avail-able and how to obtain them. On the show, I take calls from veterans and their family members and help them connect with the VA and other agencies who offer help covering many various situations. It is a very fulfilling place for me to be and I want to take this column to offer my thanks to American Le-gion Post 116 for allowing me to hone my skills by writing this column every month. Thank you for your support and for giving me this great opportunity. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Our biggest fundraiser of the year is upon us. The Flat Track races at Timonium Fair-grounds are back on this year! They were not held last year due to Covid. This is a great fund-raiser for the ALR and the funds raised are going back into capital improvements for the Post in our new fenced area and to the MD Gold Star ride. We need volunteers! The summer dates are 8/7, 8/14 and 8/21. The 8/7 race will be the biggest of the three and we need help! The MD Gold Star ride this year was a HUGE success. The ride raised over $65k for Gold Star families. The Legion Riders from 116 raised $3k, one of our biggest donations ever. A special thanks to the following riders who went on the ride: Randy Wilkerson, John Rizzo, Dave Hartzell, Ronald Wilson, Tim Miller and Mike Hartzell. Dave Hartzell did go down and suffered three broken ribs, but was able to tough out the ride with his injury!!!! He is now fully recovered and doing well. We will be riding to the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania on 10/16. We will also be stop-ping at the Ft. Collins Post for lunch. This is an all day ride and one not to be missed.

(SAL continued from Page 2) The Ace of Diamonds continues each Friday. We are about half-way through, and the pot is growing. Do not forget, this Ace of Diamonds has two draws per week, so you get double chances. Come on by on Friday and be there for the 8pm drawing for maximum winnings. To buy a ticket, you must be a member in good standing of the Legion, SAL, Auxiliary or Riders. I hope to see you there! We have had our installation of new officers on the 19th of July, so be sure to check out the new names on the board when we get them up and say hello to any new officers and thanks to those who are still serving. Make sure you are checking out our Facebook page for any

updates, information or just to say hello. See everyone on Au-

gust 12th for our next meeting!

Let me introduce myself to all of you. My name is Mike Huntington and I am your new membership chairman and First Vice Commander.

It is my job this year to process your membership cards and work on getting all of you to renew your membership for the new year, 2022! The cards are now available and we are ready to get your cards out to you as soon as you are paid up for the year. Dues are $34 but you can save $2 by paying early. Early Bird Post dues are only $32 if you pay before Veterans Day, November 11.

Our membership has slipped over the last few years, and we want to reverse that trend. We are now as-sociated with the Western Region and District 8, so let’s show our new district that we are an active Post by paying our dues early, so when you get your renewal notice mail it in right away.

Thanks,
