The Sign of JonahChrist said, “For as Jonah was three days and three

nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.” Matthew 12:40-41 (KJV)

Lessons Learned:

• We cannot hide from God• God hears prayers no matter where we are• God is always just in the affairs of men• When things don’t go our way, don’t get

angry• When life’s comforts are taken away, don’t

get angry – there are more important things in this life

punishment• Nations and individuals must live up to

the knowledge granted them

Page 35: Where We Are Today

35

Today’s Relevance

• Even elaborate worship, if heartless, is an insult to God

• Going through the motions will not acquit one before God, for He can read hearts and motives

idolatrous background• Hosea took Gomer as his wife• After their marriage, she became a harlot• Through this marriage God wanted to teach

Israel a lesson• God used this actual experience as a living

illustration of His love for a wayward Israel and of their unfaithfulness to Him

Page 42: Where We Are Today

42

Hosea’s Three Children (1:3-11)• First child a son “Jezreel” meaning “God shall scatter”

• Second child a daughter “Lo-ruha-mah” meaning “not (Lo) having obtained mercy”

My people, And I will not be your God” • The name reflected the climax of Israel’s fate.

Page 43: Where We Are Today

Page 45: Where We Are Today

45

God’s Unfaithful Nation (2:2-23)• The comparison between Gomer and Israel

60

The Prophet’s Last Plea (14:1-

9) • The book does not close without God’s offer of forgiveness. Israel was guilty before God, yet through repentance could have known restoration.

“O Israel, return to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity. Take words with you, And return to the Lord. Say to Him, ‘Take away all iniquity...’”

(Hosea 14:1-2)

Page 61: Where We Are Today

61

The Prophet’s Last Plea (14:1-

9) • The book does not close without God’s offer of forgiveness. Israel was guilty before God, yet through repentance could have known restoration.

“Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; The righteous walk in them, But transgressors stumble in them.” (Hosea 14:9)

Page 62: Where We Are Today

62

Today’s Relevance• God still calls out for, and requires, loyalty• The world is abounding with false gods and

religions• Even some churches of Christ are giving

themselves to the world and to the worship of the individual

• People are rejecting God’s laws and substituting their own religious preferences

• This is spiritual adultery with God
