Take a trip all the way through our 3.25 mile long tunnel. The journey will last two hours and provide you with an in-depth insight into the history of the 200 year tunnel. There are two scheduled trips, one leaving Marsden portal at 10am and the other leaving Diggle portal at 1pm. Tickets are priced at £15 per person and there is a taxi service provided at no extra cost, which for the morning trip will bring you back to the visitor centre in Marsden and for the afternoon trip will take you from the visitor centre to the Diggle portal. Please let us know in advance if you will require this service. We recommend passengers wear appropriate warm clothing as the tunnel remains a cool temperature all year round. As one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’, visitors can explore deep into this marvellous Yorkshire attraction on one of the family friendly guided boat trips, stop for a bite to eat in the Watersedge Café, or let the kids jump, climb and explore our outdoor play area and wildlife garden. For the little ones, there is a free soft play area located on the ground floor of the Visitor Centre.

Standedge Tunnel is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain. Located in the unique Pennine countryside, a stone’s throw from Manchester and Leeds, it makes a great day out for all the family.

Visitor CentreOur free Visitor Centre tells the story of the tunnel right from the planning through its 200+ year history, including the fascinating story of its restoration and reopening in 2001. With a range of items from our national collection on display and an informative film outlining the roles people played the centre brings the history of the tunnel alive.

Short daily boat trips:After taking a look around the free Visitor Centre to learn the story of the tunnel, take a 30 minute boat trip into this amazing feat of engineering. Our guide will thrill you with tales of the folk who designed, built and worked in the tunnel.
