Results
1. The Inspiration of Scripture: “Did God really say…?” 2. The
Inerrancy of Scripture: “Is the Bible without error?” 3. The
Authority of Scripture: “Is the Bible my authority?” 4. The

C A L ? Identify Cultural Attacks on Scripture and the
Results
Perhaps the one doctrine most under attack in the church of our
generation is the sufficiency of Scripture. Even people who give
lip service to the authority, inspiration, and inerrancy of
Scripture sometimes balk at affirming its sufficiency. The result
is virtually the same as a denial of biblical authority, because it
directs people away from the Bible in search of other
“truth.” – John MacArthur, Think Biblically! (22)

C A L ? Identify Cultural Attacks on Scripture and the
Results
2. Results a. Man-centered philosophy of counseling (i.e.
pragmaticism, personal experience, emotions, or feelings) has
infiltrated the church (Jer 17:5-6; Col 2:6-8)
5 Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and
makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6
He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an
uninhabited salt land. (ESV) – Jeremiah 17:5-6

C A L ? Key Elements that Make Biblical Counseling Biblical
“The authority of Scripture means that all the words in Scripture
are God’s
words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of
Scripture is to
disbelieve or disobey God.” - Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology
(73)
Authority of Scripture
1. The Bible is Viewed as Authoritative & Sufficient

C A L ? Key Elements that Make Biblical Counseling Biblical
(1)The Bible is Viewed as Authoritative & Sufficient
“The sufficiency of Scripture means that Scripture contained all
the words of God he intended his people to have at each stage of
redemptive history, and that it now contains
everything we need God to tell us for salvation, for trusting him
perfectly, and for obeying him
perfectly.” - Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology (73)
Sufficiency of Scripture

C A L ? Key Elements that Make Biblical Counseling Biblical
“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am
teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take
possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is
giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor
take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your
God that I command you.” (ESV) – Deuteronomy 4:1-2 (cf. Prov
30:5-6; Rev 22:18-19)
a. The Bible Attests to Its Sufficiency: (1)The Bible is Viewed as
Authoritative & Sufficient

b. Practical Application of Sufficiency i. We have objective truth
to build our lives upon (John 17:17) ii. We don’t have to look
elsewhere for a revelation from God (John 1:1, 14) iii. We have
what we need to counsel ourselves and others (Rom 15:14) iv. We
have an objective guide to help us navigate life (Ps 119:105)
(1)The Bible is Viewed as Authoritative & Sufficient
Canon The inspired, inerrant, authoritative, sufficient Word of
God
Hermeneutics Grammatical historical method
Biblical Theology Propositional statements, doctrine
Practical Theology How a person
changes and grows
What truths & doctrines does it teach?
What does the whole Bible say about it?
How does it apply to life?
Systematic Theology Unifies fruit of biblical theology
into a useable whole
Is it true?

C A L ? Key Elements that Make Biblical Counseling Biblical
a. Christ is central… i. All things were created through Him and
for Him (Col 1:16; Heb
1:2) ii. Jesus is fully God and fully Man
1. As God… Sovereign ruler (Phil 2:10-11) 2. As Man… Acquainted
with temptation and suffering yet without sin
(Heb 4:14-16; Is 53) 3. As God and Man… Mediator for sinners (1 Tim
2:5)
iii. Jesus is the only Savior (John 14:6; Is 43:11)

b. Ministered under the authority of the local church…
i. Saints are equipped for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:11-12a) ii.
Saints work together for the building up of the body (Eph.
4:12b)

3. Prayer and the Holy Spirit are the hope and power for change for
all involved
• We pray for wisdom as we minister to others (Prov 2:6; James 1:5;
Rom 8:26)
• We entrust our ministry to the convicting and comforting work of
the Spirit (John 16:8-11 and John 14:15, 26; 15:26; 16:7)
