Dear Friends, April 4, 2017

Thank you for joining us at the WJCS 2017 Annual Gala as together we celebrate our work to build community and help care for our neighbors in need. Tonight we honor two extraordinary and longtime leaders, Froma Benerofe and Bruce Freyer. They have each had a profound impact on WJCS, on our local community, and the 20,000 people we serve every year.

Froma Benerofe is legendary and revered in the halls of WJCS. As a Past President and member of the WJCS Board since 1983, she has lent her empathy, intelligence, professional skill, leadership and resources to WJCS in service of our Westchester community. Froma embodies the Jewish imperative of Tikkun Olam in both her personal and professional lives. In addition to Froma serving as a member of the WJCS Board of Directors for more than three decades, as a practicing clinician specializing in trauma treatment, Froma played an exemplary role in the delivery of life-changing services through WJCS’ Treatment Center for Trauma and Abuse. We are deeply grateful for all that Froma has and will continue to bring to WJCS. And we are thrilled to have this opportunity to show her the honor she deserves.

Bruce Freyer is a stalwart community servant. WJCS and the Westchester community have been the great beneficiaries of his spirituality, willingness to roll up his sleeves to accomplish any task before him and his steady leadership. Bruce became involved with WJCS in 1997 and since then has made his mark through numerous positions including multiple terms as an Officer of the Board as well as chairing and serving on many committees. His impact at WJCS has been broad and deep. We are humbled by Bruce’s humility and delighted to honor him tonight.

Both Froma and Bruce have used their time, talents, ideas and dollars to help make Westchester a place where all people have access to the highest quality programs and services that address a multitude of needs. Tonight we are so proud to honor Froma Benerofe and Bruce Freyer.

We are deeply grateful to the devoted staff, Board members and volunteers who make the work of WJCS possible. We equally appreciate the confidence and investment of philanthropic individuals, foundations, corporations, UJA-Federation and government agencies who underwrite our efforts.

To Gala Chairs Carol & Herb Corbin, Debby & David Glasser, Sarah & Bruce Kayle, and to Dinner Chairs Linda & Seth Plattus and Nina & Ivan Ross – thank you for making this night possible. Have an amazing evening!

Sincerely,

Neil Sandler Alan Trager Bernie KimbergPresident of the Board Chief Executive Officer Chief Operating Officer

Honoring

Froma BenerofeFroma Benerofe has a decades-long relationship with WJCS. She joined the WJCS Treatment Center for Trauma and Abuse as a clinician in 1998. As a member of the WJCS Board of Directors since 1983 and as past President, Froma has been a force in ensuring that innovative and essential programs are accessible to all Westchester residents. She has contributed to both the foundation and everyday work of WJCS as an advisor to staff on mental health, early childhood and the Jewish community, and through her service on almost every WJCS committee.

Driven by her personal values surrounding the importance of community, family, education and Jewish continuity, Froma embodies the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam – to heal and repair the world. All those involved with WJCS – clients, staff and fellow board members - have been the beneficiaries of her passion to help others. It is fair to say that Froma is the de facto “Matriarch of WJCS.”

Froma is known as a pillar of the Westchester and New York community for her dedication to the human services, for the philanthropy she and her husband Andrew have committed themselves to, and for her involvement in a variety of other areas. She is an active supporter of the visual and performing arts and an advocate for Holocaust education and human rights.

Froma graduated from Vassar College and earned her MSW from Columbia School of Social Work. She is currently a clinician in private practice.

Froma has been married to Andrew Benerofe for 54 years and together they enjoy nothing more than time spent with their children and grandchildren.

Honoring

Bruce Freyer

Dedicated to the social welfare of his local community, Bruce Freyer became involved with Westchester Jewish Community Services in 1997. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors and has held a variety of positions including chair of the development committee and member of the government relations committee. Bruce has contributed to the mission of WJCS in countless ways - as an advocate for vulnerable children at county budget hearings and through his generous donations of time and talent to staff recognition events.

Bruce is respected by his fellow board members and staff alike for his humility, spirituality, and commitment to making the world a better place. This passion has extended near and far. Bruce and his wife Dana founded the Global Partnership for Afghanistan, a non-profit devoted to working with rural Afghans to alleviate poverty and promote economic development.

Ordained as a Rabbi from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Bruce had a distinguished career as a pulpit Rabbi, military chaplain in Vietnam and Chaplain at Manhattanville College. His military service earned him the Army Commendation Medal and Bronze Star. Bruce left the active rabbinate in 1977 and began his second professional career in the world of business.

Bruce and his wife Dana Freyer live in Scarsdale, NY and are the proud grandparents of four grandchildren: Zachary and Sydney Kurtz, children of their daughter Tyana and son-in-law Scott; and Cameron and Henry Ventura, children of their daughter Daria and son-in-law Joe.

FromaMOST OF THOSE READING THIS JOURNAL WILL KNOW FROMA AS A GIVER, AN ADVOCATE, A DOER – A FIREBALL OF INTELLECT AND ENERGY.

WE KNOW HER AS A WIFE; SHE GETS THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR IN THIS DEPARTMENT – TOLERANT, SUPPORTIVE,

LOYAL, CAREGIVING, BUDDY, CHEERLEADER AND AN OCCASIONAL COOK.

WE KNOW HER AS A MOTHER; WARM, UNDERSTANDING, WELCOMING, CHAUFFER, MESS CLEANER UPPER, PROJECT ROOM CREATOR AND MOST OF ALL, ENCOURAGING “THE DREAM” – WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE.

WE KNOW HER AS A GRANDMOTHER; EXPERIENCED, PATIENT, ROOTING SECTION LEADER, HELPER, WARM SHOULDER, CRYING SHOULDER, LIFTER UPPER OF THE DOWNTRODDEN – ALWAYS THERE!!

WE KNOW HER AS A SISTER/SISTER-IN-LAW/AUNT; CONFIDANT, SOUNDING BOARD, ALWAYS 100% TRUTHFUL, ADVISOR, SENSE OF HUMOR, DOES NOT TAKE HERSELF TOO SERIOUSLY – SHE’S THE ONE YOU GO TO WHEN YOU HAVE TSOURIS.

AND FINALLY, WE KNOW HER AS A FRIEND; FUN, RESPONSIVE, EMPATHETIC, LOVES TO LAUGH – MORE THAN THOUGHTFUL ADVISOR.

THIS COULD GO ON FOREVER, BUT WE COULD NOT AFFORD ANOTHER PAGE!

FROMA IS INDEED A REMARKABLE WOMAN WHO DESERVES BUT DOES NOT SEEK RECOGNITION.

WITH MUCH LOVE,
