THE COMMENCEMENT TRADITION
WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE SEAL• Sapere Aude is the Latin phrase
meaning “Dare to Know”• The Viking “Mascot” represents our
main campus in Valhalla (which means “Heaven” in norse mythology)
•The shield represents protection and commitment to loyalty
•The book represents commitment to scholarship
•The torch represents enlightenment•The laurel leaves represent graduation
THE MACEThe academic mace represents the commitment of our dedicated faculty, their teaching excellence, their focus on student success, and their loyalty to the college and its mission. It precedes the president during the processional and recessional. Westchester Community College’s mace is 42” tall and is made of mahogany with brass accents. The mace was a gift from the Office of Student Involvement and Alumni Relations in 2015.
PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLIONThe medallion is a symbol of the office, worn by the president on official and ceremonial occasion. At Westchester Community College, the chain of office is a replica of the College Seal suspended on a bronze link chain engraved with the names of the college’s presidents – past and present.
ACADEMIC DRESSThe cap and gown worn at today’s commencement were part of everyday dress in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. Although such clothing originally had no academic significance, the cut and fabric varied according to social standing and rank. Eventually, however, using the cap and gown to indicate academic rank and department was adopted, even legislated, by the oldest European universities. American colleges and universities later adopted such dress, differing from the European cousins they were emulating only in that a standardized intercollegiate dress code, first drawn up at an 1895 meeting at Columbia University and periodically amended since, established a uniform pattern regulating the color, shape, and texture of academic dress.
The cap is a symbol of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity which scholarship confers on the wearer. Almost universally it is square, stiffened, and tasseled – the mortarboard. The tassel may either be black or the color of the scholarly subject, although only doctor’s degree recipients may have gold thread.
The gown is a symbol of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any dress of rank or social standing. Traditionally it is black for all degrees, although in recent years several universities have adopted robes using their traditional school colors, such as crimson for Harvard, blue for Yale, light blue for Columbia. Only the gown for the doctor’s degree is trimmed, with velvet panels down the front and three bars of velvet across the sleeves.
