Growing and Spreading the Good News of the Catholic Faith in the Heartland.
Dear People of St. Anthony, St. Mary and Holy Family Parish:
“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)
Light is an amazing thing. Just a little of it goes a long, long way. One candle can guide a person safely through vast darkness. And we… we have so many bright lights around us!
The beautiful lights decorating Abbot Jerome Hall for our Catholic School Dinner & Auction tonight are just an outward expression of the warm love for our children shining in the hearts of our school parents and our parish communities. Thank you to all who join hands across parish boundaries to create this very bright spot in each year.
What a blessing to have Sr. Verdeen Meyer home with us at St. Anthony’s this Sunday to share her vocation story on this World Day of Consecrated Life. Even now, when she could be retired, she serves Our Lady of Peace Parish in Marshfield coordinating their RCIA program among many other ministries. Never in the national news, yet her simple faith and genuine love has brightened many lives.
Joyce Rondorf and Janet Boh lit up our Finance Councils at their joint meeting January 26th. As you may remember, the Pastoral Councils had supported their request that we hire someone to replace our former Religious Education Coordinator, Margie Ouimette. But the Pastoral Council said they needed a report from the Finance Councils as to our ability to fund this position before they would make their final decision.
As always, it was a very thoughtful conversation at the Finance Council meeting. First, it was clarified that there is no movement in the parish at this time to also replace Seth Duprey, our former Music Coordinator. Secondly, there were questions about how much time this person would spend in each parish. But in the end, it was unanimous among all three Finance Councils to hire a full time person to provide leadership in Religious Education and Youth Ministry.
In addition to the persuasive reasoning of Joyce and Janet, it was pointed out by a St. Mary’s member that there were two half time positions in last year’s budget. Although we will have to include benefits with a full time person it would still not be that great of a financial step for three parishes to share.
What made this all thinkable for St. Anthony’s, who did have difficulties providing the salaries of the two half time positions, was the news that the parish was named as a recipient in the will of Bob Bauer. We have already received the first half of the $61,000.00 he has left for the parish’s unrestricted use. In speaking with Hedwig, his wife, she asked that something be purchased for the parish that he would be remembered by. But she felt the rest would be well spent on drawing our youth back into parish life. She agreed that a new funeral pall, altar cloth and vestment would be a fitting way to remember him. The bequest will allow St. Anthony’s to fund its share of the position for several years, by which time we should experience the increased involvement and financial support the new ministry would generate.
Financial secretaries are working through the numbers and will have detailed reports for Parish Councils as they meet next. With their final approval, we hope to begin advertising in April and have a person hired by mid summer. As Joyce and Janet prophesied at the meeting: if we lose them as youth, we will never see them again as adults. I feel too, that although it is prudent to invest in buildings, it is even more important to invest in the vitality of the community using those buildings. Otherwise they become museums: empty shells with no life in them.
Our Alpha program is off to a good start. The twenty-one we had the first night did not all make it back the second night. One group had come from Colby just to see how the program works. And there were slippery roads. I suspect our numbers will settle around the 14 to 15 mark. But the people who have come are just what we hoped for: some coming back to the Church after long times away, some just looking for community and wondering if Church is a possibility for them. They come to rest in the light. Life can be so harsh, simp-ly being with people who are kind and caring really brightens one’s heart. A little light goes a long way.

Q: What is the Jewish offering of first fruits?
A: The first fruits of the harvest were offered as a symbol that the whole harvest belonged to God. We give a
portion of our monetary wealth as a sign that we will use all our wealth in the service of the kingdom,
according to God’s will. Information taken from the book Forming the Assembly to Celebrate the Mass by Lawrence E. Mick

THANK YOU
A huge thank you to St. Mary’s Memorial Fund for funding the majority of our newly installed speaker system and to the Bud & Marcie Denk Family for funding the remainder. Brian Haines, installer, was here last Monday to remove our old speaker and to tweak our new system. How wonderful it is to hear in all corners of our church! May we all be more informed and involved since we can hear so much better. Also, thank you to all parish members who put in the time & effort to research this. We appreciate all you did on behalf of our entire parish. Sue Pakiz Finance Chair
Thank you to everyone for their prayers and good deeds. God Bless you all!
