Four “Why”s for VoIP
• VoIP saves businesses money with inexpensive call charges.
• VoIP lets businesses use the broadband already in their office to handle both voice and data.
• VoIP call quality has had years of refinement, and is now reliable for business application.
• VoIP provides an ideal solution for the growing trend towards dispersed workforces / telecommuting.
VoIP: Not “Why”… “Which”
4
The question is no longer, “Why VoIP?”
Instead, businesses must ask:
“Which VoIP?”

4 Good Reasons Why Premises VoIP
Is Not the Best VoIP Solution Available
• Implementation involves high startup costs for equipment, complex
system configuration and wiring, and a jarring all-at-once transition.
• System Maintenance requires extra in-house staffing or expensive
3rd party service contracts. ($200-300+ / hr.)
• Disaster Recovery is the buyer’s responsibility. Total interruption of
service at all locations may occur in the event of hardware burnout,
malicious network attacks, power grid failure, or natural disasters.
• Service Upgrades are not automatically integrated into service.
Improvements such as new value-added features, reporting
capabilities, or custom solutions are left to the buyer’s expense.
Limitations of Premises VoIP
6
#1: Implementation
“Implementation involves high startup costs for equipment, complex
system configuration and wiring, and a jarring all-at-once transition.”
The Hosted VoIP Solution:
• The initial investment is limited to the purchase and installation of
phones. No need for an expensive PBX switch.
• Phones come pre-configured or “plug-and-play”. Once connected to
broadband, they are live in minutes without any complex wiring.
• If desired, hosted solutions can be implemented over multiple
stages. (e.g. office by office or department by department)7
#2: System Maintenance
8
“System Maintenance requires extra in-house staffing or expensive
3rd party service contracts. ($200-300+ / hr.)”
The Hosted VoIP Solution:
• There is no major on-site hardware that requires replacement or
repair. Responsible maintenance and business continuity are the
duty of the hosted service provider.
• Any troubleshooting or firmware repairs are serviced from remote
by the hosted service provider’s experienced technicians.**
** Be warned, a few hosted VoIP providers require the purchase of long-term service
contracts in order to assist you in this manner.
#3: Disaster Recovery
“Disaster Recovery is the user’s responsibility. Total interruption of
service at all locations may occur in the event of hardware burnout,
malicious network attacks, power grid failure, or natural disasters.”
The Hosted VoIP Solution:
• The hosted service provider is responsible for ensuring continued service integrity, network security, and redundant hardware failover.
• To protect their service-critical equipment, hosted service providers
typically “co-locate” servers in climate-controlled facilities. These
sites are typically designed to weather natural disasters and have
on-site backup power generators.
9
#4: Service Upgrades
“Service Upgrades are not automatically integrated into the system.
Improvements such as new value-added features, reporting capabilities,
or custom solutions are left to the buyer’s expense.”
The Hosted VoIP Solution:
• Hosted service providers must continually improve offerings in order
to remain competitive. Partnering with such a provider means always
having access to cutting edge features and reports.
• Hosted service providers are often able to develop and implement
highly-customized solutions to meet very specific needs.

Ex: Cruise Adventure Travel
• Cruise Adventure Travel, Inc.– www.cruiseadventuretravel.com– Central office and staff located in Florida.– Over 50 travel agents working from remote offices.
• Specific Needs– Productivity Awareness: Are remote agents following up with leads?– Gradual Transition: Agents at varying levels of transition readiness.– Easy Implementation: Minimize startup costs and equipment load.
• With Hosted VoIP…– Web-based tools and reports provide easy-to-read productivity metrics.– When ready, travel agents able to easily switch from PSTN to hosted VoIP.– Paid a fraction of the cost to get started vs. a premises-based solution.– “100% Virtual” – lack of premises equipment has allowed all employees to
work from a SOHO.
