A married man with children who says “ I can’t stop womanizing. I keep falling back into it. I know I am hurting my wife and children, but I can’t stop it.” Another one says “My addiction to gambling is ruining my family. It makes me lie all the time. I am sick of it! Yet I can’t stop it.” An old lady in her eighties, who may have just a few years to live can’t stop watching bad websites. She is afraid to die with this habit, she is afraid that her life will be an almost complete waste. Another person can’t apply the diet that would prolong her/his life and be able to take care of his/her children and grandchildren. Are these persons free? No! Yet they obeyed their passion for pleasure, power, possessions, prestige. These took the center of their lives and they are no longer free. In today’s Gospel, Christ gives us a wake up call. It sometimes scares me that I have little years left to become truly free, to be able to say a full “yes” to God when I die. True freedom is never the freedom to choose be- tween sin and virtue, or between good and evil: “It is the power to follow only the right path, to say only yes to whatev- er God holds out to us.” (Bishop Barron) That power comes from the grace of God but also requires our full cooperation with that grace. We must discipline our bad habits, change them into good habits. And that is hard, very hard work. But after many, many years, the good habits will set in almost naturally. Choosing virtue will be easier. David Brooks, quoted by Patrick Briscoe, O.P. said, “Making a commitment simply means falling in love with something (or someone,) and then building up a structure of behaviour around it that will carry you through when your love falters.” Pastor’s Corner Continued... CHOOSING TRUE FREEDOM DAY BY DAY

One of the saddest things a priest witnesses is that many people live in such a way that they become less and less free. A married man with children who says “ I can’t stop womanizing. PARISH NEWS Pastor’s Corner Continued…

Many young men and women believe that their problem with pornography and sexual licentiousness will stop after their marriage. No. It won’t stop by itself, not even with old age and sickness. They need to commit themselves to discipline and reorient their passions by putting them at the service of God and others. Again Brooks said, “Your fulfillment in life will not come from how well you explore your “freedom,” and keep open your options (not committing.) That’s the path to a frazzled, scattered life in which you try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one… Your fulfillment in life will come by how well you “end” your freedom.” Jesus said, “If any want to save their lives (their freedom) they will have to lose it for my sake (for God’s purposes.)” So stop feeding your sinful habits, and with the grace of God, fill your emptiness with what is truly good: a deep unselfish love for God and others, that expresses itself in service to God and to those He puts in your path. “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke: 9:62) God bless you, Fr. Pierre
