Do Not Sadden The Spirit: Today's second reading is possibly the most tr agic pas-sage in the bible. Some people have the idea that the Holy Spirit is nothing but an imper-sonal force, without feelings. This is a terrible misconception. The Spirit is equal to the Father and the Son, who both show powerful emotion. Moreover the Spirit is intimately involved in our personal lives. This is not the characteristic of a detached "energy", but of a person. In view of this passionate interest, it is a tragedy that the Holy Spirit can be sad. Love means making another person happy, even at the cost of our own happiness. What could you do to make the Holy Spirit happy?

The biblical icon of the Good Shepherd summarizes the mission that Jesus received from the Father: that of giving his life for the sheep. This attitude is also a model for the Church, which embraces her children as a mother who gives her life for them. “The Church is called to be the house of the Father, with doors always wide open”.... No closed doors! No closed doors! “Everyone can share in some way in the life of the Church; everyone can be part of the community”.... The Church “is the house of the Father, where there is a place for everyone, with all their problems” In the same way all Christians are called to imitate the Good Shepherd. Especially Christian families can cooperate with Him by taking care of wounded families, accompanying them in the life of faith of the community. Each one must do his part in taking on the attitude of the Good Shepherd, who knows each one of his sheep and excludes no one from his infinitive love! Pope Francis 5th August 2015

CAMEROON FUND As part of the planned parish concert, the first practice of the Verse Speaking Choir will be in the church at 7pm on Wednesday, 12th Au-gust. New members most welcome including Ps 6 and 7.

A ship’s captain radios a lighthouse keeper, ‘Radio reception is very bad. Please spell out your weather report.’ The keeper replies, ‘W-E-T-H-O-R R-E-P-O-R-T.’ The cap-tain says, ‘My God, that’s the worst spell of weather I’ve had in a long time.’ Little Johnny walks into his classroom wearing a single glove. His teacher asks him what he’s doing. ‘Well ma’am,’ says Johnny. ‘I was watching the weather programme on TV and it said it was going to be sunny, but on the other hand it could get quite cold.’ Tom arrives at a hotel in a Scottish village on a cold, grey, drizzly day. The weather remains the same for two weeks. Exasperated, Tom stops a little boy in the street. ‘Does the weather here ever change?’ he asks. ‘I don’t know,’ replies the boy. ‘I’m only six.’

Elijah's Meal: Around 850 year s before Jesus, Isr ael was ruled by a weak king, Ahab. He had married a pagan, named Jezebel. He converted to her religion, which was essentially a sex cult. Elijah, a prophet, challenged this and became an enemy of the queen. She threatened to have him killed on sight. Elijah was broken. He began to flee to Mount Sinai to ask God for help. Along the way, he gave up and prayed for death. God sent a messenger with bread and water. This gave him the courage to continue the long journey. The bread seems to foreshadow the Eucharist its power to keep us faithful to our personal journey to God.
