Outstanding Performance at the Sydney Opera House
It was with absolute pleasure that I was able to attend the
Festival of Instrumental Music last night at the Opera
House to watch our students perform as part of a
combined performance group that included nearly one
thousand children from public schools across our state.
Our students were involved in the recorder and string
performances and they did an amazing job. They played
several musical pieces which were absolutely brilliant and
their behaviour was outstanding.
A big thank you to Mrs Varney for all the extra time she
spent practicing with the children and for her organisation
and to Mrs McPhan for her assistance and support. When
teachers take on these extra responsibilities it provides an
opportunity for our students to participate in very
memorable experiences and very few can beat this.
I could not have been a prouder Principal then I was last
night.
The Day Kanwal Went to Rio
Last Wednesday was one of the most memorable and
enjoyable days I have had in my over 30 year career in
education. We celebrated the Olympics in style and
proved that you didn’t really have to be there to get in on
the excitement.
Our opening ceremony and student performances were
wonderful and the lighting of the flame was a creative feat
in itself. Throughout the day, our students were involved
in many ‘Olympic’ activities both inside their classrooms

appreciated.
Uniforms
Lowes, our new uniform supplier, has let us know that
most stock for Kanwal PS uniform is now available in
store. The summer dress, microfibre jacket, fleece jacket
and black embroided shorts are available in all sizes in
store. They are still waiting for the new polo and the girl’s
culottes which should arrive next week.
They also have available a school bag and library bag
with our school emblem for parents wishing to purchase
these. They are not a required part of the uniform but are
included as an option should parents wish to buy them.
Spelling Bee
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee winners who will
now be representing the school at the Regional Finals in
September at Warnervale PS. Our junior winners were
Dani W and Savannah R and our senior winners were
Charlie W and Chase S. To all of our students who
competed at all levels, a big congratulations to each and
every one. I know many of the teachers were impressed
with your confidence, persistence and resilience
throughout the competition. Great job everyone and a
big thank you to Ms Trudgeon for organising and
co-ordinating the competition.
Staffing News
From 5 September I will be on long service leave. Mrs
Baigent will be relieving Principal during that time. I will
be returning to school at the beginning of Term 4.

Physical Activity Primes Children’s Brains For
Academic Excellence
By now, researchers have pretty much solidified the
notion that exercise is good for physical and mental
health. One recent study, for example, found that
running preserves a protein in the brain that protects
cognitive function and improves memory. But in light of
the childhood obesity epidemic, how can we
encourage children to exercise more?
In a new report, 24 researchers from eight different
countries gathered to create a consensus on the
impact of physical activity on kids’ health. They
focused primarily on studies that examined the health
of children aged 6 to 18, and analysed the effects of
exercise on children’s fitness, health, cognitive
function, motivation, and mental and social health. The
report defines physical activity as “an overarching term
that consists of many structured and unstructured
forms within school and out-of-school-time contexts,
including organized sports, physical education,
outdoor recreation, motor skill development programs,
recess, and active transportation such as biking and
walking.”
In short, they found that exercise was beneficial for
nearly every aspect of a child’s wellbeing: physical
health, cognitive ability, motivation and psychological
wellbeing, as well as social inclusion. Exercise leads
to improved cardiorespiratory fitness, which in turn
improves brain development and intellect, they said.
When it comes to cognitive function and academic
prowess, researchers found that exercise before,
during, and after school helped children perform better
in school (a notion supported by other research).
Taking time away from classes for kids to participate in
gym class, sports, or other recreational activities,
meanwhile, didn’t take away from academics. “Time
taken away from academic lessons in favor of physical
activity has been shown to not come at the cost of
scholastic performance in children and youth,” the
researchers state. That’s because physical activity can
increase brain plasticity, or the brain’s ability to change
and grow over time, which is conducive to learning,
memory, and cognitive function.
Exercise also provided benefits on a mental health
level, improving students’ self-esteem and motivation.
Taking part in sports or recreational physical activity
also led to peer group acceptance and close
friendships. To encourage social inclusion, the
researchers suggest providing equal access to
opportunities in sports settings regardless of a child’s
demographic background. In addition, making way for
bike lanes, parks, and playgrounds can help increase
We would like to welcome Kylie to our casual canteen
staff. She will be working in the canteen on Thursday
and Fridays as a support for Kerrie. Michelle has also
accepted an on call casual position. Congratulations
to both ladies.
The canteen is the P&C's main source of finances.
This enables us to be able to substantially fund major
projects within our school, such as smartboards and
air-conditioning that benefit every child. Whilst we
have opened up 2 new paid positions in the canteen,
we need to be mindful that this is still costly. The
canteen still needs a strong volunteer base to
function at a cost effective rate. At present we have
only 8 volunteers.
We are asking if there is anyone out there who could
volunteer for a day or even a few hours, we would
love to hear from you. We need help on Thursdays
and Fridays as these are our busiest times as well as
every second Wednesday. Please, if you can help
out, contact Kerrie in the canteen on 43923477.
Henny Penny Hatching will be visiting our school on Monday 12th September 2016 for 11days. They will be bringing 3 chicks and 12 fertile eggs which will hatch over the first week.
All eggs are fumigated before they are set at the hatchery, so there are no health concerns.
Henny Penny Hatching provides an exciting experience for both children and teachers!
Positive Behaviour for Learning Kanwal Public School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school. Our whole school expectations are:

UNIVERSITY COMPETITIONS Congratulations to all of the students who sat the Spelling and Writing tests. The following students deserve a special mention for their achievements.
Parking safely will help to keep young children safe - even if it means walking further to the
school gate. Please do not double park and
call your children to the car. Teachers will wait until you are
safely parked before letting chil-dren move to your car to ensure
student safety.
Family holidays during the school term
Don’t forget if you are going on holidays during
the school term, even if it is only for a few
days, you need to send a note to the class
teacher prior to the leave period.
You are no longer required to apply for an ex-
emption from attendance from school if you
are going on a family holiday during the school
term. The absence will be recorded as leave on
the attendance register.
When visiting our school, if you see potential
hazards please report to the office or
Principal immediately. We have hazard
forms located in the office area. If the hazard
is easily rectified without putting yourself
in any danger, eg moving a bag from the
walkway, please do so. You are still required
to report it to the office so steps can be
taken to ensure the hazard is addressed.
When volunteering at our school please
ensure you have been taken through the
safety briefing. A copy is kept at the back of
the visitors’ lanyard for easy access.
In the event of an emergency please follow
the instructions of the teacher. If a drill is
taking place please do not enter the
grounds. Signs will be located at entry points
to the school to inform our community that a
drill is taking place with the request not to
enter.
Pedestrian Safety
Thank you to all of the
parents and carers who
continue to show safe driving
practices around our school
and to the parents, carers
and students who use the
crossing to safely cross Craigie Avenue
before and after school. It is a very busy
place at times and we do
appreciate your patience and modelled
behaviour that provides an excellent
example of road safety for the students
at our school.
Work Health and Safety at our school
CAMP AUSTRALIA
Term 3 already and our second term here at Kanwal Public School. Welcome back to our regular families that have been utilising our service and a big welcome to all our new families beginning with us this term.
During the school holidays Camp Australia operated Holiday Club here at the school. We had many families utilise this service from Kanwal Public School and surrounding schools. The theme these holidays was based on the Olympic Games where children participated in many different themed days from the Opening Ceremony, Games Quest to Silver and Gold. Each day the children participated in a range of activities; art and craft, games and sports. Every child had a wonderful time with us here at Camp Australia and we are looking forward to the next school holidays and what they will bring.
We have a very exciting term planned here at Camp Australia. Camp Australia operates Tcaf (The Camp Australia Foundation), this is a not for profit organisation that provides us with the opportunity to work with charity partners to develop exclusive programs to improve the lives of primary school children throughout Australia and internationally. This term we are supporting The Smith Family and their Learning for Life program. We are fundraising for this pro-gram and the amount of money we raise will be matched by Camp Australia. All families are encouraged to partici-pate and get involved.
We will have a guessing jar competition at $1 a guess or $2 for 3 guesses and this will run all term and the winners will be announced at the end of the term, the winners will be the people who guess the correct amount or the clos-est for each jar. We will also be planning different themed weeks that the children can participate in, watch this space to find out what is happening each fortnight. Thankyou Camp Australia Staff; Tammy and Lauren.
Take 3 – Project Green Sea Turtle
We would like to thank Mrs Tracey for the fantastic artwork
she has done on the rubbish bins in the playground. They
look great, are more visible and reinforce the Take 3
message.
We would also like to acknowledge our Take 3 students,
Hayley and Laila, who wrote their own Take 3 speech and,
with the help of Krystena and Beaven, presented it at both
Primary and Infant’s assemblies, as well as to all
Kindergarten classes.
We would like to share their speech with you.
“Good afternoon Kanwal.
Today we are going to persuade you to put your rubbish in
the bin and Take 3 for the sea.
We have been doing a waste audit in the basketball court area. The first time we collected 117 pieces of rubbish! On
the second time we collected 232 pieces! After we showed the Take 3 videos at assembly we collected 86. That was
better but still not great. Most of this rubbish was found in the garden at the bottom of the oval. We need to do better
to stop rubbish entering our waterways. When rubbish gets into the ocean it harms sea creatures.
THE DRAIN IS JUST FOR RAIN!
It’s not just sea turtles that are affected, all sea animals and land animals are in danger. They could eat the plastic or
become entangled. Just think of your favourite animal, it could die from our plastic!
So we need your help to save your favourite animal and all other creatures.
It is very easy - just Take 3, or more, for the sea.
