A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOHN“Thank You!”That seems so simple, but that phrase, and more importantly that outlook on life, can profoundly change so much about our days. Here’s one reminder that scripture gives:

14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:14-15I think it is not coincidence that peace within, and thankfulness are mentioned together. It seems that’s something that the world around us is discovering as well. In his online devotion, Prof. David Lose of Luther Seminary has explored some of the current research into human thought and behavior, and found that current thinkers are rediscovering truths that our faith should have taught us long ago. He comments: “So here’s another basic truth that it is fascinating to see explored and deployed by today’s leading thinkers: You are so much happier – and, as it turns out, far more productive – when you count your blessings. So what would our households, congregations, school, and places of work be like if we made a concentrated effort to count our blessings, give thanks for them, and encourage others to do the same? I think that such a small gesture could be surprisingly powerful. (http://www.davidlose.net/2012/07/give-thanks/)So this month I challenge you to adopt thanksgiving not just as a holiday, but as an outlook on life. In addition I’ll be placing a “Thanksgiving Book” in the narthex. There will be readings, poems and such there, but feel free to write notes in the margins, or stick cards inside, sharing the things that you are thank God for this day.

…FROM JIM, YOUTH MINISTER“Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:4-5

I was reminded of this wonderful Bible verse while visiting with one of our 9th grade Confirmation youth. She had chosen this verse as her special life verse and this Bible passage had become a source of strength and encouragement to her. We recently celebrated a wonderful Affirmation of Baptism service with 23 Confirmation youth. Each of them had begun the Confirmation journey in 7 th grade and now were prepared to stand before the congregation at ELC and made a profession of faith. In these words they were saying “Yes” to follow, worship and serve in a life with Christ. They were affirming those baptismal promises spoken to parents, sponsors, and the community of faith when they were babies. Each of them made a public profession of faith and said that they intended to continue the covenant made in holy baptism where they were called and claimed into the family of God.

I would like to encourage each of you and your families to celebrate daily the gift that God has given us in baptism, as we are called and claimed into the family of God. Each day is a new opportunity to remember and embrace this wonderful gift!

Here are a couple of upcoming dates to put on your calendar.Sunday Night Youth Group (7th-12th Grade) November 11 & 25 We will plan to meet at ELC in the lower level of the new addition from 7-8:30 p.m.

Confirmation Extravaganza Our Confirmation youth and Confirmation guides and leaders will be attending the Confirmation Extravaganza at the Alliant Energy Center on Wed., Nov. 14. We will be meeting at 4:45 p.m. to ride a bus. We plan to return by 9:30 p.m. to the church parking lot. Please bring $10/person for this event.

Service Event at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Our ELC youth (9-12th grade) will be participating in a service project on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9-11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Please sign up in the Narthex or talk with Jim if you are interested. We plan to meet at 8:15 a.m. at ELC in the church parking lot.

Wishing you all a blessed month of November and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Peace and Joy in Christ,

AGAPE

Good day Church Family! This is my favorite time of year; the leaves are changing, the days are cooler, lots of colors all around us and I love sipping on tea or hot apple cider! The children at Agape are talking about pumpkins, apples, leaves and all the colors of fall! Thank you for all your support! I enjoyed the day working alongside several parent volunteers and board members, thank you for helping with the Pie Sale! I look forward to another fun day next year.I am so excited about the playground; it looks wonderful!!! The children are enjoying their new outside pay area! FINANCIAL UPDATEGENERAL FUND First of all, we made it through the summer without having to borrow any additional money. Thank you for your contributions making that possible.

The Fund had income of $29,515.37 and expenses of $26,767.66 in September resulting in a positive $2,747.71. This is 3 months in a row now that we have had positive results. Year to date our contributions are now $953 ahead of last year. Our year to date bottom line of ($2,604.16) is $22,817.75 better than last year. All expense items are at or well under budget except for Worship which is $391 over budget. We are proposing a small increase in the Worship budget for next year because it has consistently run a bit over for the last couple of years.

These 3 positive months have now increased our cash balance to $2,300.57. Hopefully this trend will continue through the end of the year to give us a little cushion going into next year. I am also hoping we will be able to make some more payments back to the Designated Fund to decrease the debt to at least half of what we borrowed by the end of the year. Average attendance in September was 297 compared to 329 last year.

BUILDING CAPITAL FUND had income of $1,488 and expenses of $7,400.72 resulting in a negative (5,912.72). he major expenses were for the push button door opener - $4,258 and painting - $2,950.

THE EXPANSION FUND had income of $5,945.92 and expenses of $164,377.81. As of September 30th we have not used $226,037.43 of the $550,000 of cash we borrowed from Thrivent. This amount is included in the cash balance below.

The following chart shows the cash balance in each of the funds at the end of September.

Account Balances

General Fund

Building Capital Fund

Designated Fund

Expansion Fund

As of 9/30/11 ($2,848.43) $29,978.94 $45,314.25 $221,253.75

As of 9/30/12 $2,300.57 $19,230.42 $23,475.25 $309,516.06

COUNCIL NEWS

SOCIAL ACTION MINISTRY"Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart be also."

Luke 12:33-34(ESV)During this upcoming holiday season and throughout the year, follow your heart and let it guide your thoughts and actions. Each of us has a bountiful treasure which has been provided to us. As much as tangible, material gifts can help many in need; let us remember how significant a kind gesture, listening ear, short note, and simple smile can uplift someone up emotionally. This in turn can rejuvenate and give one hope for a better day and brighter future. Many thanks to all in this congregation who have opened their hearts to help others in need. Steve Samuelson, Council Liaison
