Introduction
3Preceptor ship Competencies Complete Document v4 June 2016/Sharepoint
This document has been designed to guide and assist our newly appointed registered practitioners manage the transition from student to registered practitioner (Nurses/ Midwives and Operating Department Practitioners).
The document sets out a number of the essential competencies that are required in order to fulfil the role of a Band 5 working in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This document should be used line with the Trust Preceptorship Policy (2015), which outlines the aim of preceptorship and the support you will receive. You will be provided with a copy of this policy alongside this document.
Interviews
There is a requirement for interviews to be carried out and documented at predetermined stages throughout the preceptorship period. The aim is to ensure that the Preceptee is appropriately supported, has the opportunity to reflect, can receive feedback regarding their progress. The Preceptee and preceptor can then jointly identify any areas where either may have concerns in order for these to be addressed.
It is the responsibility of both the preceptor and Preceptee to ensure that during the interviews:
Confidentiality will be maintained unless the preceptor deems any information discussed needs to be disclosed.
Constructive feedback will be given and received.
The Preceptee must be proactive to seek support and learning opportunities to achieve these competencies.
Transitional Learning Needs Analysis
A transitional learning needs analysis (page 5) must be started when the registered practitioner commences employment. The transitional learning needs analysis is a framework to identify the specific development needs of the preceptee. The learning needs analysis will be used at the initial interview with the preceptor to discuss how the learning needs might be met.
Competency sections
The document is divided into sections to support you through your preceptorship period
Competency Objectives (Page ) Defined Preceptee/preceptor interview timelines (Page) Supporting evidence logs (Page) Reflective practice/discussion logs (Page) Edward Jenner element/module logs (minimum of 10 to be completed) Logs for documenting Shadowing experiences, including feedback (minimum of 2 to be
completed)
The domains and competencies are focused around the practitioner’s initial transition from student to registered practitioner and their ability to demonstrate these skills, initially with support and supervision to becoming a competent, safe and autonomous practitioner.
4Preceptor ship Competencies Complete Document v4 June 2016/Sharepoint
The criteria for being assessed as ‘achieved’ requires the Preceptor and Preceptee to be satisfied that the Preceptee is able to consistently demonstrate the knowledge and practice related to the competency.
If you are experiencing problems in achieving these competencies, then this must be discussed with your preceptor and ward manager as part of the Trust development support process.
The Supporting Evidence Record
Please use the supporting evidence pages to record how you have demonstrated learning and development for your learning needs as identified in the learning needs analysis linking these to the relevant domain and competency in this document.
The Reflective Accounts Form
Please use this form to assist you to complete your reflections. You can either use this form to complete your reflection or use to structure your reflection and then insert your reflection as a separate sheet into the document.
