I. Introductiona. They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left

everything they knew to follow Him. Now, out of nowhere, He was telling them that they couldn’t follow Him any longer. Where I am going, you can not come.

b. What do you mean, we can’t come with you? Peter said that he was willing to die for Jesus. I’ll follow you to the point of death!

c. More troubling news came Peter’s way: You’re going to deny me three times before the crowing of the rooster, Peter.

d. But even though this is troubling news, let me tell you how the story ends, the reason that I’m leaving is that I’ve got to go and get heaven ready for you. At the right time, I’ll come back to get you so that we can spend forever together.

e. The reality is that there is plenty of bad news that we get in the story of our life. But the reminder today is that the story of the Christian’s life has a happy ending. That’s good news, so good that it is good enough to sustain you through all of the difficult experiences that God brings into your life.

f. What we’re going to see today is that heaven helps troubled hearts.

g. When His disciples were most troubled, Jesus pointed them to heaven. Heaven helps troubled hearts by proving that God is trustworthy.

h. If we can trust Him through our trials, we’ll experience peace instead of fear and worry.

i. Today, be looking at seven helpful glimpses of heaven that will help you to trust God and not be troubled through the pain and suffering of this life.

i. But before we dive in, I’d like you to think of something in your life right now that is causing your heart to be troubled.

II. (John 14:1) "Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

a. Do not let your heart be troubled.

1

Page 2: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

i. Lake1. Our hearts can be like a lake. On some days, that

lake is calm like glass. Other days the water gets pretty choppy and the white caps begin to slam against the shore.

2. Troubled hearts are tossed around, they’re stirred up and agitated.

3. You’re doing fine and then all of a sudden you get some news, you go through some experience and your heart is flooded with turmoil.

4. The peace departs and the trouble comes crashing in.

ii. Don’t let that happen1. But Jesus says to His disciples and we hear Him

saying to us this morning, don’t let that happen.2. Don’t let your heart get troubled.3. Keep your heart at peace. It is possible and we’re

even commanded to keep our heart from getting troubled.

4. The opposite of a troubled heart is a peaceful heart.

a. (John 14:27) "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. (NAS95)

5. Instead of having a troubled or fearful heart, we can have a peaceful heart.

6. How do we do that?iii. 14:1b Believe in God, believe also in Me.

1. Simply by faith.2. We are to trust God through the trials.3. As we trust Him, there is a peace that remains in

our hearts.4. We trade our troubled heart for a peaceful heart

when we trust God.

2

Page 3: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

5. When we doubt God, our hearts are besieged by those troubles.

6. Well, what do we believe about God?a. We believe that He’s in control, that He

knows best and that He’s working everything together for good.

7. When Jesus told the guys that He was going away, they interrupted Him because that’s the last thing in the world that they wanted to happen.

8. That was their greatest fear.9. Sometimes, our greatest fears become reality.

That’s when we need to trust God the most.10. Jesus re-assured His disciples by letting

them know the rest of the story.11. Here’s how it’s all going to end guys, we’ll

be together in heaven forever. I’m going to get it ready for you and then I’ll come and get you.

12. All the stuff you’re going through here is just going to help you enjoy it there all the more.

13. Believe in God, believe also in Me.iv. Point them to heaven

1. When His disciples hearts were troubled the very most, Jesus pointed them to heaven.

2. He just told Peter some earth shattering news.3. Jesus was going to leave him4. Peter was going to deny Jesus.

a. That’s pretty bad.5. But then he says, don’t be troubled.6. Trust in the God of Heaven.7. Now He unveils seven glimpses of heaven to help

the troubled hearts of His disciples.v. Application:

1. When your heart is deeply troubled, direct your attention to the God of heaven and come back to

these seven glimpses of heaven that Jesus gives us right here in John 14.

2. The details of heaven crystallize our hope and help us to endure the most difficult of days.

III. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. (NAS95)

a. In My Father’s Housei. Heaven is the house of God the Father.

ii. Heaven belongs to God.1. God the Father is the homeowner of heaven.

a. He will not be evicted.b. He’s not still making payments.c. Heaven is the home that He designed and

built.2. He is the Creator of heaven.3. He is also the Sustainer of heaven.

a. He’s holding the place together.b. He upholds all things by the Word of His

power, that includes heaven.iii. Heaven is where God lives.

1. What do you do in your house?2. God does some of these same things.

a. He rests in His house.b. He creates in His house.c. He rejoices in His house.

i. (Zephaniah 3:17) "The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy. (NAS95)

d. He shows hospitality in His house.i. No doubt, there are great banqueting

feasts in the Father’s house.

4

Page 5: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

ii. The greatest might just be the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

1. (Revelation 19:7-9) "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he *said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'" And he *said to me, "These are true words of God." (NAS95)

iv. Since heaven is the Father’s house, His will is done there.

1. That’s how it is in your house.a. What you say goes in your house.b. Your house is where your will is done.

2. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.a. Heaven is the place where God’s will is

always done.b. Evil will end.c. Death will be no more

i. Death, that worst and last enemy to be destroyed.

ii. Death is separation from God. If death is the worst thing that can happen, separation, then union with God must be the best thing that can happen.

iii. We’ll experience the fullness of our union with God when we enter our Father’s house.

5

Page 6: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

b. Transitioni. Now we’ve seen our first glimpse of heaven

ii. Since heaven is God’s house, we should trust and not be troubled. 14:1-2

c. Application:i. And already, our troubled hearts are helped.

ii. Oftentimes, evil is what troubles us.iii. But with the hope that evil will one day end, we find

relief.iv. Death is also one of the most troubling things of this

life.v. But there will be no more death in our Father’s house.

vi. So we have plenty of hope that death and evil will end and that life and righteousness will be forever established.

vii. Remember that we’re living in a world that Satan holds sway over. We shouldn’t be surprised that things are as bad as they are. The surprising thing is that they’re not much worse. So we might want to stop complaining about how bad things are in Satan’s world.

viii. Instead we should start talking about how good things are going to be in our Father’s house.

1. But before you can talk about it, you’ve got to think about it.

2. So let’s keep thinking about how good things are going to be in our Father’s house.

d. Transitioni. Our first glimpse of heaven is this, it’s God’s house.

1. Since heaven is God’s house, we should trust and not be troubled.

a. As we trust in this God of heaven, our troubled hearts will be traded for peaceful hearts.

2. The next glimpse of heaven that Jesus gives us has to do with who is going to be there.

6

IV. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many dwelling placesa. Many

i. That is, not a few.ii. Quite a lot of dwelling places.

iii. Probably, more dwelling places that you can count.b. What do you think these dwelling places are?

i. Spots to live.ii. Since there are many dwelling places, there must be

many people dwelling in heaven.c. Heaven is going to be filled with loads of people.

i. It won’t be us four and no more.ii. It will be a vast gathering, a very large group.

1. (Revelation 7:9) After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; (NAS95)

2. (Revelation 7:13-14) Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, "These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (NAS95)

a. There’s a great multitude, just of people who have come out of the great tribulation.

b. How many more will be added to this innumerable crowd?

iii. Heaven is going to be filled with loads of people.1. Now hell is also going to be filled with loads of

people2. So that in itself is not especially comforting.

7

Page 8: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

3. Indeed, being around loads of people could be troubling.

4. What kind of people will heaven be filled with?iv. People who have been conformed to the image of Jesus

Christ.1. In heaven, everyone you will ever meet will be

loving as Jesus is loving, they’ll be holy as Jesus is holy and they’ll be joyful as Jesus is joyful.

2. And so will youd. Transition

i. That’s the second glimpse of heaven.ii. Since heaven is filled with loads of loving people, we

should trust and not be troubled. 14:2be. Application

i. And this is good news for troubled hearts.ii. Loneliness

1. One of the things that can trouble a heart is loneliness.

a. God Himself said, “It is not good for man to be alone.”

i. (Genesis 2:18) Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." (NAS95)

2. We have been created for fellowship, friendship and companionship.

a. When we don’t have that, our hearts are troubled, saddened and altogether less joyful.

3. There won’t be any lonely people in heaven.a. All of us will be surrounded by other people

that we really enjoy being around.b. We won’t have to put up with each other

any more.c. We’ll truly be excited to see one another.

8

Page 9: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

d. And we’ll treat each other just as Jesus wants us to

e. Because Heaven is the place where God’s will is done.

f. And God’s will for you is to be loved, cared for and blessed.

g. Everyone around you will be involved in that good purpose so that God is abundantly glorified.

iii. Many dwelling places1. This is also good news because it means that

there’s plenty of room for your unsaved loved ones.

a. Few things trouble a heart as much as the thought that those who are a part of our family on earth won’t be a part of our family in heaven.

b. Maybe, you wonder whether they’re elect or not.

c. Good news, hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, not people

d. Dwelling places in heaven were created for people.

e. Keep praying for your unsaved friends and family members knowing that there’s plenty of room for them at the heavenly Inn.

f. If they trust in Christ alone as their only way to heaven, you’ll be sure to see them amongst the many people there in heaven

f. Transition:i. Since heaven is filled with loads of loving people, we

should trust and not be troubled.1. If you are troubled by loneliness, trust God that

your loneliness will one day end.

9

Page 10: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

ii. Our third glimpse of heaven is that it will be our home forever.

V. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many dwelling placesa. Dwelling places

i. These are habitations or abodes. ii. They’re places to live.

1. (John 14:23) Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. (NAS95)

a. When you trusted in Christ, God came to live inside of you.

b. You were sealed with the Holy Spirit.c. The Father and the Son also came to make

their abode with you.d. God lives inside of you.e. You are His dwelling place.

iii. Now, Jesus lets us know that in a similar way, there are many dwelling places in heaven.

1. Just as there are many dwelling places on earth for God, i.e. Christians.

2. There will also be many dwelling places in the Father’s House there in heaven for Christians.

iv. A place to remain – forever1. You’ll never want to leave.2. You’ll never have to leave

v. One of the troubling things in our culture is how scattered our families have become. We live a long ways apart from each other.

1. My own family is scattered. We have family members living in Alaska, Idaho, California, Mexico and Arizona.

2. But there in heaven, the Family of God will be gathered, altogether under one roof, that is in the Father’s house.

10

Page 11: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

vi. Quality1. Our forever home will be a place of the finest

quality.2. It will be the nicest place in existence.

a. I did missions work in Eastern Kentucky and I was troubled by the houses that some people lived in.

b. They were completely run down, with holes in the floor and ceiling. Completely unsafe.

c. How much more troubling must it be for the multitudes currently living in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

3. Our forever home will be a place of quality, the nicest place in existence.

4. We’ll get to remain there forever.vii. Integrity

1. It will also be a place of integrity.2. There will be no repairs or maintenance work to

be done.a. Guys, the honey do list will at last be done.

3. You might say that in heaven, the second law of thermodynamics will be repealed. Things will no longer wear out, get old, rusty or moth eaten. They’ll last forever in a condition of perpetual newness.

viii. Passing through1. We’re also reminded that this world is not our

eternal dwelling place.2. This world is not our home forever.3. We’re in the world, but not of it.4. Soon, our pilgrimage will end.

a. On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eyeto Canaan's fair and happy land

11

Page 12: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

where my possessions lie.RefrainI'm bound for the promised land,I'm bound for the promised land.Oh, who will come and go with me?I'm bound for the promised land.

b. Transitioni. That’s the helpful glimpse of heaven

ii. Since heaven is home forever, we should trust and not be troubled. 14:2c

c. Applicationi. The book of Revelation refers to those who dwell on

the earth. That’s the unsaved. People who make this world their home. When things go wrong here on this earth, then they are deeply troubled.

ii. We don’t have to be. This world is not our home. In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

iii. We need to stop thinking of this world as our home because it isn’t.

iv. We need to start laying up for ourselves treasures in heaven.

d. Transitioni. In my Father’s house are many dwelling places.

1. Since heaven is home forever, we should trust and not be troubled.

a. As we trust the God of heaven and remember that we’re just passing through, we will not be as troubled by the trials along the way.

b. Though the banks of the Jordan be stormy, there’s a fair and happy land where our possessions are forever secure.

12

Page 13: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

ii. The fourth helpful glimpse of heaven has to do with the character of heaven.

VI. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you;

a. Truth tellingi. Jesus assures His disciples that He’s telling the truth,

the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help Him God.

ii. If heaven only had a few dwelling places, instead of many, He would have told them.

iii. If heaven didn’t have any dwelling places, but only rest stops, He would have told them that.

iv. Why would He have told them?1. Because Jesus is honest.2. Jesus is also the King of Heaven.3. Since the King of Heaven is honest, Heaven must

be an honest place.b. And this provides comfort to troubled hearts because it

means that…i. There will be no more lies

1. Spoken by any of us2. Spoken by leaders3. Spoken by politicians4. Spoken by employers5. Spoken by parents

ii. No more vows will be brokeniii. There will be no more empty promisesiv. Liars are on the outside of heaven

1. (Revelation 22:14-15) Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and

13

Page 14: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying. (NAS95)

a. People who love and practice lying will be outside of heaven.

b. People who love and practice truth telling will be inside of heaven.

c. As hell is populated with liars, so heaven is populated with truth tellers.

v. You will always speak the truth in love.1. Never put your foot in your mouth again.2. Never verbally abuse someone else again.3. Your speech then be forever gracious.

a. Pr 25:11 ¶ A word fitly spoken [is like] apples of gold In settings of silver.

i. These are the kinds of words that you’ll forever speak.

c. Transitioni. That’s the fourth helpful glimpse of heaven

ii. Since heaven is a place of honesty, we should trust and not be troubled. 14:2d

d. Applicationi. If your heart is troubled because of lies and dishonesty,

take comfort. You’re going to heaven and heaven is a place of honesty and truth. The lies will one day be over.

ii. If your heart is troubled because you are in the practice of speaking lies, stop it. The King of Heaven is honest and we should be too.

1. Honesty doesn’t mean always speaking true and hurtful things.

14

Page 15: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

a. If it causes unnecessary pain, you can remain silent, because love doesn’t inflict unnecessary pain. That’s the work of hatred.

e. Transitioni. Since heaven is a place of honesty, we should trust and

not be troubled.1. Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife.

Think of how comforting it would have been to look forward to heaven where slander will be no more.

a. As we trust the God of heaven, our hearts will be less troubled by the lies here on earth.

2. The fifth glimpse of heaven that Jesus gives us is that heaven will be very personal.

VII. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. (NAS95)

a. Personali. Public Spaces

1. The crystal shore2. Streets of gold

ii. Private spaces 1. I go to prepare a place for you2. Heaven won’t be generic like a hotel room.3. It will be personal like your bedroom.

b. Prepared for you by Jesus Himself.i. Your kind of place.

ii. What kind of a place do you think Jesus is preparing for you?

1. Prepared bya. The One who loves you

15

Page 16: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

b. The One who died for youc. The One who has infinite resourcesd. The One who knows you better than you

know yourselfe. The One who wants to richly bless you

forever2. This will be your kind of place.

c. Belongingi. I go to prepare a place for you

1. This word carries with it the idea of belonging.2. Jesus is preparing a place where you will perfectly

belong.3. You’ll never feel like a fish out of water again.4. Ugly ducklings will then be eternal swans of

beauty.5. If you feel like a misfit or a reject, be assured that

you will never feel like that again.ii. At last, we will have that place that we’ve all been

looking for, a place to belong because the One to whom we belong has prepared it for us.

d. Transitioni. That’s our fifth helpful glimpse of heaven.

ii. Since heaven is a place for you, we should trust and not be troubled. 14:2e

1. Jesus said, foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.

2. There was no room for Him at the Inn either.3. But I think He must have taken comfort in the

knowledge that He would soon return to heaven.a. When you’re feeling troubled by being out

of place or because you can’t seem to find a place where you really belong, trust the God of heaven that the place you’re looking for is just around the corner.

b. Jesus is getting it ready for you even now.

16

Page 17: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

iii. The sixth helpful glimpse of heaven has to do with the fact that we could arrive there today.

VIII. (John 14:3a) "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself,

a. If I go and prepare a place for youi. Every Tuesday night, the church gets prepared for the

Awana kids.ii. Every Tuesday night, the Awana bus driver goes out to

pick up the kids.iii. You don’t get the place ready for Awana unless you

also plan on going to pick them up and receive them when they get here.

iv. He’s not getting the place ready for you for nothing.v. He’s preparing the place for you to enjoy.

b. I will come againi. Jesus is coming back.

ii. As truly as He was born in Bethlehem, so truly He is coming again.

iii. As Christians we are waiting for His soon return.iv. The heavenly bridegroom will soon come to fetch His

bride the church.v. We will be snatched away from this world in an event

known as the rapture.vi. We believe that this will take place before the

tribulation and before the Millennial Kingdom.c. Context

i. Remember, Jesus’ disciples are troubled because He told them that He was going away.

ii. He says, keep trusting me though guys. Remember, God is good. This is all going to work out just fine.

iii. The reason I’m going away is to get a place ready for you, don’t let your heart be troubled because you’re going to really like the place when I’m done with it.

iv. And don’t be troubled about my departure, because I’m coming back. I will come again.

17

Page 18: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

v. The reason I’m coming again is to…d. Receive you to myself.

i. Not to smite youii. Not to banish or punish you.

iii. Not to reject youiv. I will come again to receive you to myself.

1. And a wonderful thing it is to be received by God.2. To be accepted in the Beloved.3. Because of the price that He paid for our sins,

through faith in Christ, He will now receive us to Himself.

4. Sinful people are reconciled to a holy God through the cross of Christ.

5. The dilemma of the ages is this: “How can a holy God have fellowship with sinners?”

6. By dying for their sins, rising again and then returning to receive those who believe in Jesus to Himself.

e. Transitioni. That’s the sixth helpful glimpse of heaven

ii. Since heaven is immanent, we should trust and not be troubled. 14:3a

f. Applicationi. You might feel like you can’t endure your

circumstances for another day. You might feel like the people in your life are more troubling to your heart than you can bear.

ii. But remember, that it could be today.iii. Joseph spent 13 long years in prison, but everyday he

was able to wake up with the hope, it could be today that Jesus comes back.

iv. This is a sustaining hope. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

v. But each day also has enough hope of its own.vi. Because Jesus said, Surely, I am coming quickly.

18

Page 19: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/.../documents/Manuscript_3.docx · Web viewIntroduction They had every reason to be troubled. After all, they had left everything they

1. (Revelation 22:20) He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming quickly." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. (NAS95)

a. That means that His coming is immanent. It could be today.

b. Heaven is also immanent because we don’t know how much time God has given us here on this earth.

c. It could be today.g. Transition

i. Since heaven is immanent, we should trust and not be troubled.

1. As we trust the God of heaven that Jesus could return today, we are less troubled by the hardships that seem like they’re just going to go on forever.

2. They won’t3. You can endure one more day with the hope that

Jesus is coming soon.ii. Our seventh glimpse of heaven is what makes heaven,

heavenly.IX. (John 14:3b) that where I am, there you may be also.

a. The crown Jewel of heaven is Jesus.i. Without Him, we wouldn’t want to be there.

ii. Heaven is good because we get to be with Him.b. That where I am, there you may be also.

i. Jesus will spend forever in heaven.ii. He wants you to be with Him there too.

iii. That’s why He has gone to these extravagant lengths.iv. That’s why He created everything.v. That’s why He was born.
