After Dark Photography Tips

• Always use a tripod - A tripod provides stability when making long exposures, reducing the risk of any camera shake.


• Turn off Image Stabilisation - Image stabilisation will often distort photographs when using a tripod, generating the opposite effect.

• Use a Remote Release or Self Timer - When using ‘bulb’ or ‘time’ mode a remote shutter release or a self timer will help reduce any risk of camera shake.

After Dark Photography Tips

• Focus Manually - Auto Focus on most cameras will not work after dark. It is best to focus manually to infinity.


• Have Patience - After dark we are often dealing with long exposures, it pays to have patience to get the best results.

• Keep an Eye on the Histogram - Camera screens make photos look brighter than they are at night. The histogram will show the true exposure.

Night Time Camera SettingsAPERTURE - Like landscape photography the magic aperture numbers for after dark are f5.6 - f11.

SHUTTER SPEED - This will depend on the above settings and ambient light. Use ‘Bulb’ or ‘Time’ mode.

ISO - Keep ISO low for less noise but increase for faster exposure times. Ideally 400 - 1600.

WHITE BALANCE - A White Balance preset of ‘Sunny’ or ‘Flash’ will balance orange glow from street lights.

By using the settings and techniques we have discussed try and achieve a perfect night time exposure. Remember to keep an eye on your histogram as camera screens make photos look brighter than they are at night.

Light Painting Tips

• Keep the Light Moving - By moving your light source around you will avoid over exposing areas of your photograph.


• Light Source Power - You can use the power of your light source to determine the exposure time. You will have to take a few test shots.

• Composing After Dark - Use your torch to scan the scene making sure you have everything you would like in the frame.

TASK 2: Light Painting


Create a series of landscape and lighting effect photographs using the techniques discussed and the light sources available to you.

So, what have we learnt today?TOP NIGHT TIME TIPS - Focus manually to infinity, use a tripod, remote and or self timer for stability and keep an eye on your histogram for the correct exposure.

LIGHT PAINTING - Keep the light moving to avoid over-exposing areas of the frame and use the power of the light to determine exposure time.

NIGHT TIME CAMERA SETTINGS - Use an aperture value between f5.6 and f11, keep your ISO as low as you can and use bulb or time mode to create long exposures.
