War, Peace and Politics The artists` works were greatly

influenced by the political climate surrounding them

Their artwork as a result reflected their political and philosophical beliefs

Page 4: War, Peace and Politics

War, Peace and Politics They brought about a new way

of looking at the world This new way of looking was

used to counter the desensitization brought about by the invention of cameras

They did not look into their imaginations but rather took what they saw from the world and conveyed it through their perspective.

“What do you think an artist is? ...he is a political being, constantly aware of the heart breaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war.”— Pablo Picasso

43) Giacometti. Man Pointing. (1947) Bronze. The piece was created in one night- the process

of destruction & recreation Broke away from surrealism which was looking

below the realist surface of life to existentialism a contemplation on the very basics of human existence and this lack of meaning.

It is one of several in a series of extremely thin humans and animals cast out of bronze. A representation of the horrors of concentration camps.

He struggled greatly with the meaning of life.
