  • What do I need to play a sport?

    Physical and medical insurance.Students must meet the VHSL and Wakefield eligibility requirements.Students must also meet the academic requirements set forth by the VHSL and Wakefield .School insurance can be purchased by parents if they do not already have medical insurance on their children.

  • When should students get physicals if they want to play a sport?A physical is required annually after May 1st of each school calendar year.

    The VHSL requires that each student participating in athletics have a completed physical exam given by a physician, nurse practitioner, doctor of osteopathy, and/or a physicians assistant.

  • Where can parents find athletic schedules and club information?Athletic schedules are posted on the Wakefield website per season; http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/wakefield

    A list of clubs available for students to join is provided in the Student Agenda book, in the Parent Handbook, and on the web page.

  • How do students join a club?Club sponsors will publicize when they plan to meet on our morning announcements and by posting flyers in the school. Students should listen for these announcements and attend the club meetings.

  • How can a student start a new club?Find two interested faculty members who are interested in sponsoring the club.Obtain a minimum of 25 signatures of interested students.Establish a proposal explaining the purpose and merits of the club.Submit the information to the Student Activities Office for approval.

  • Student Clubs/Activities *Clubs and activities are subject to change based on student interest and participation. Membership into clubs is opened to all students.

  • Should one expect to pay an entry fee for athletic events?Ticket prices Regular games -$5 (Regular Home games - $2 APS student rate except varsity football games)District Tournament - $6Regional Tournament - $7School Attendance day to participate

  • Are there late buses for athletes?Late Buses M-Th 4:45 and 6:45Transportation will be provided to most athletic events.After away games, athletes must ride the bus back to school or ride with parents.After home games, parents are responsible for picking up their children: there are no buses later than 6:45.

  • Can athletes get injured? While each coach and our athletic trainer emphasize safety during practices and events, there is a risk of injury associated with sports.

    All athletes returning from an injury will be required to have written permission from a doctor.

  • ConcussionsThe state of Virginia has passed a new law on concussions in student-athletes. Ms. Kigin works closely with doctors, parents, coaches, athletes and administrators to ensure the student-athlete is safe to return to school and sport participation following a head injury.

  • Do students practice everyday?Students are expected to attend all practices.Practices begin during the time frame of 3:30 7:30 pm.Practice can last 2 hours.Practices are held Mon Fr., SaturdaysNEVER on Sunday!Summer, holiday and weekend practice times may varyParents should pick kids up no later than 30 minutes after practices have ended.

  • Do parents have to buy uniforms or equipment?Team equipment/uniforms are distributed once athletes have made a team.All school issued equipment will be collected at the conclusion of each season.Parents are expected to pay for all equipment, uniforms, and other school issued items if not returned, lost, and or damaged.Some teams may require athletes to purchase practice gear, team shoes, etc.Proper athletic shoes must be purchased by parent please consult with coach.

  • Are there team awards?Sports Banquets (dessert only) are held after each season to honor athletes.Coaches present special awards, varsity letters, certificates and other recognitions at these banquets.Varsity letter jackets can be purchased through a vendor for those athletes who would like to have them.
