PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2011 has begun in spectacular fashion for the Association with the successful presentation of Shades of Summer Colour Show Off. This event set the standard of excellence in the showring and from the amount of positive feedback I believe we should be able to take advantage of the gaps left by a few self imploding associations and cater for owners of coloured horses who are now approaching us for membership. The success of this event is down to the diligence of your committee, their combined experience and their open and fair minded treatment of all competitors. It had to be good to get Tane Wegener smiling nearly all day from under the brim of his old faithful hat! The atmosphere must have been almost euphoric to make Wayne Davey take the lead rein and enter the ring with, of all things, a pony filly??!! Toni and Darren Hunt, show up everywhere with a veritable herd of ponies in all the colour range of cream gene and Dun! Toni has sourced some major sponsorships for our events and Darren is often contributing interesting research items to our website. The website, www.buckskinswa.com has become an enormous knowledge base as far as buckskin, dun, cremello and perlino data is concerned. Sue Davey and Jenny Brett are fielding a lot of queries both national and international. These queries come about due mainly to the fact that our Western Australian bred horses appear in photos on the site. We are unique in our isolation that has allowed us to maintain quality colour in our register and to have it identified properly. With the introduction of DNA testing, we can now be even more careful that we do not muddy the colours as has happened elsewhere. Finally, congratulations to Donna Newton and her all round champion Oro Embelasar. Bud, in his first ever carriage driving event, went from 2 nd place in the Novice Horse class (of two) to being sashed Supreme Show Driving Exhibit at the recent WAHDS Class Show Driving event. I believe it evidences just what an absolute Champion he really is! Heather Pow President

after 6 months on her ‘special medi’!!
Clip had been showing signs of not being herself for a couple of years and in August 2010
started showing obvious physical signs of Cushing's Disease (long hair), a blood test confirmed
this, and she started the treatment of 1ml per day of Pergolide.
Clip is loving life again with more bounce than she has ever had before, Thanks so much to

Many property’s suffered extensive damage. Loosing their roofs, sheds, fences, power supply and trees down everywhere. York Vets spent all day Sunday patching up horses with cuts from flying debris—no reports of serious injury.

Understanding Equine Colour
In relation to Creams and Duns - by WABA Inc.
It is important to note that any solid colour less than Black, is a Dilution of Black.
The first gene that effectively dilutes black is Agouti =AA or Aa.
This gene takes the black out of the body coat of a black horse and gives you varying degrees a Bay.
The Agouti gene can be carried by any coloured horse except Black, Black Buckskin, Black Buckskin/
Dun, Black Dun (Grulla) and Perlino Black (Smokey Cream).
When Agouti is carried by a Chestnut, Palomino and Cremello which doesn’t carry a black colour gene, it’s
effectively hidden and even though it is still carried dominantly, AA or Aa, the effect of this gene is
presumably never seen in the Red base coat (ee). (Except in the progeny of that horse, if the progeny has
inherited a black gene from the other parent)
This should also be said for the newly discovered variance of Agouti (At) which is responsible for ‘Brown’.
For many years now and since the first effective testing of horse colour we have been told that there is no
such thing as a brown horse. Yet standing in paddocks everywhere was ‘the brown horse’.
Now the colour gene responsible for the brown horse has been isolated and we can all breathe a sigh of
relief because our brown horses are truly ‘Brown’. Initially being called a variance of the Agouti gene the
gene responsible is written as, At.
This gene plays a big part in the true recognition of Buckskin and Dun colour just as the Bay Agouti gene
does.
In the future other variances of the Agouti gene may be discovered which will be very helpful in
understanding the different variations in Buckskin and Dun colour.
Understanding ‘homozygous’ or ‘heterozygous’
Homozygous = 2 copies of the same gene e.g.: ee, AA or CrCr.
Always throws one copy of the gene to its progeny
Heterozygous = 1 copy of a gene e.g.: Ee, Aa or nCr.
Has a 50% chance of throwing the gene to its progeny.
The gene that most effectively reduces colour is of course the ‘cream gene = Cr’
This is because the cream gene is unique in the way it interacts with the base colours.
Homozygous = Perlino or Cremello
Heterozygous = Buckskin or Palomino.
Most, if not all other solid coloured horses (excepting chestnut which is always homozygous = ee) appear
the same whether they are Homozygous or Heterozygous. E.g. EE or Ee will give you a black horse and an
added AA or Aa will dilute the black to give you a bay
Other colours that are referred to as dilutions of colour like Silver/Taffy or Champagne again do not work
like the cream gene and look the same whether homozygous or heterozygous.

Notice to all Stallion Owners. Two
ideas have been suggested regards Stallion
Advertising
1. That we, as an Association, take an ad in the Stallion Directory and list the Stallions registered with WABA! We support the members and they support us, maybe they might contribute to the cost whereas they wouldn’t take an ad themselves, that way it might even run to a full page with thumbnail photos.
2. Suggestion we consider introduction of
a Standing at Stud Page for our Website.
The exact details as to who can advertise
what and for what cost would need some
sorting.
Anyone interested in advertising should
express their interest to the Secretary.
Suggestion for SOS 2012:
Consideration’s for next years SOS Show-off
will be discussed at the AGM. If you are unable to attend the meeting but have an idea
you would like to put forward please contact the Secretary.
One suggestion is to start the show on Saturday afternoon and go into the evening.
followed by a barbecue. Brookleigh offer excellent accommodation facilities for both
you and your horses and there are also other options nearby.
News Flash!!!!!! We have just been advised that the RAS will now allow Dual
Registered horses to enter more than one Breed Section at the Perth Royal.
…………………………...Years of requesting this has finally paid off!!!!
We would like to take this opportunity to let your club/association know that the annual Hoofbeats magazine
WA STALLION DIRECTORY will once again be an exclusive, full colour, major
feature for WA in the August/September 2011 issue, offering the most
comprehensive range of WA stallions and studs available in Australia!
www.hoofbeats.com.au
The directory aims to accommodate stallion owners who wish to make the most of their stallion’s potential
income earning ability and increase their awareness to the wider WA equestrian community. With full colour
ads starting from only $125, the directory caters to even the smallest stud and reaches over WA 10,000
readers, directly reaching the wide ranging WA breeders and buyers market in this state’s most popular
equestrian magazine.
For those who do not stand a stallion at stud, or offer their stallion to outside mares, the directory offers an
ideal avenue for advertising brood mares and progeny for sale and a cost effective means of general ‘brand’
Please send your results in for the Newsletter—no matter what you are up to, we want to know!!!!!!

WABA SHADES OF SUMMER SHOW-OFF & FUTURITIES 2011
Many thank to all our members who showed at, helped out and/or sponsored the inaugural Shades of Summer Show-
off and Futurities. Special Thanks to the WA Paints Committee headed by Nat Bosman, who helped us run the day.
Special Thanks also to our Judges Ingrid & Phil Christmass who displayed their extensive horse knowledge in a non
bias and fair way. Especially with their understanding of Cream and Dun colour. Ingrid once competed with her
lovely Show horse palomino “AIR APPARENT”, through the mid 80’s, one highlight being Reserve Champion Galloway
Hack at the Royal. In later years, Air Apparent also placed 2nd in an official hack class at the Royal aged 19.
To Jenny Brett & Pat Buick for organising the raffles which raised $364. This went to WA Horse Council to put toward
‘Disaster Relief’. Thanks also to Di Norman who ran the canteen, raising around $300 which went towards
sponsorship of the Save The Avon—Breed Show.
To Toni Hunt who is in charge of WABA Sponsorship and did a fantastic job for this show. A number of our sponsor
have expressed there gratitude for the personnel acknowledgement they received from the WABA and are already
offering sponsorship for future shows.
A Special mention to the Whitburn Family who came all the way from Dunsborough just to watch.

Why Does a Horse?
Why does a horse live so little years?
And pass us by........is it their great speed?
Is it their great strength?
Is it like a parent?
The one who is with us when we are small........and just walking, on two legs.
And helps us grow tall, and begin to fly......
At our side when we fall, waiting at home when we needed the time to walk through the pain,
and space to think through how to hang on in life....
Behind us when we need strength.
With warmth and softness after the tears.
One to look up to in life, to learn subtly from.
To learn pride and humility at the same time.
One who places firm boundaries, gives us respect, and teaches it at the same instant.
Lifts us beyond heights we could ever imagine.
Challenges us with wisdom unappreciated.
Shows great forgiveness when faced with confusion and bewilderment at our choices.
Places no limits on patience......or time.........
Then turns to us , and accepts what we have learnt. What we have grown into.
Understands who we have become , and responds accordingly.
Respects who we are together......
And then places in our hands, their future.
Is that why?
Is that why we must see them pass before our eyes?
