Between Worlds” - SimpleMinds are a new wave/pop rockband that started way back in1977, in Glasgow, Scotland andare one of the most successfulScottish bands of all time. A lotof that success liesin the fact that theirmusic was aperfect fit for the1985 John Hughesmovie “TheBreakfast Club”,with the song “Don’tYou (Forget AboutMe)” becoming theirbest knownn u m b e r - e v e nthough they hadreleased 6 albumsbefore that. The band had theirmusical roots in the whole newwave/punk movement of thelate 1970’s but their unique useof guitars, along withsynthesizers, set them apartfrom their peers quite quickly. The band actually took theirname from a lyric in DavidBowie’s 1972 single “The JeanGenie” and their website hasthe perfect description of whatis one of my favourite bands ofall time; “Simple Minds havebeen many things to manypeople: sound scapers, sound-shapers, soundtrack makers,serial chart-toppers.” So flash forward 40 years(OMG!) and we have this-studioalbum number 18 for SimpleMinds. The album opens upwith the first single that wasreleased last month; “Magic” isa perfect example of howSimple Minds can basically do

a U2 like anthem-yet totallymake it their own. That similarrock-oriented vibe can also befound on the track “BarrowlandStar”, which pays homage to theband’s famous hometownvenue of the same name (theBarrowland). Interestinglyenough, this song really soundslike a David Bowie number.

Fans of theband’s earliermusic mightrecognize hintsof their 1985song “Alive andK i c k i n g ”sneaking in onthe fantasticretro track“Sense ofDiscovery” here.Granted, theband does have

the rock vibe present on manyof the songs-but they do find aperfect balance between guitar-driven songs and their earliestsynth pop/new wave days; “InDreams” and “Walk BetweenWorlds” reminds me of someof the band’s stuff from the 1982“New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)” album-which to me is theirbest album ever. The song“Utopia” has a pure 1980’s retronew wave vibe to it, and“Summer” breezes through likea blast of fresh air on a summerday-the song has a greatbassline and haunting vocalsby Jim Kerr. To finish, “TheSignal and the Noise” has a realNew Order-like vibe to it with,once again-David Bowie-likevocals. It is a great number. All in all-Simple Minds havean awesome musical trackrecord; this album puts acapital A in that Awesome.

RRSP Contribution Deadline for 2017 taxation yearis Thursday, March 1, 2018. T4 Slips for 2017 must be distributed to employeeson or before Wednesday, February 28, 2018. CPP,OAS and EI slips will be made available online anddistributed via mail before that date as well. Personal Tax Returns for 2017 can be filed as earlyas Monday, Febraury 26, 2018 and must be filed byMonday, April 30, 2018 to avoid penalty.
