large private-sector operator of public transport, established in 12 countries on three continents. Downer EDI Ltd, provides comprehensive design engineering, infrastructure and

asset management services to the transport, energy and resources sectors, across Australia, New Zealand, UK and Asia Pacific

Bombardier - Has supplied over 3,500 light rail vehicles worldwide. Utilised its local Queensland industrial designers based on the Gold Coast to design the vehicle; a vehicle

designed on the Gold Coast for the Gold Cost community.

McConnell Dowell Constructors - is an established engineering and construction organisation servicing the transport, utilities and social infrastructure industries with design,

civil and building capabilities. MacDow has a strong history in bringing leadership to urban construction and rail projects

both internationally and in Australia. Operating in more than 26 countries across Africa, Australasia and the Pacific region and the Middle East, MacDow’s recent projects in

alignment with associated works include the Glenelg Tram Overpass and North Melbourne Station redevelopment.

Safety

! KDR Gold Coast has an integrated approach to safety ! Using an Integrated Management System (IMS) which

centralises Health Safety Environment and Quality (HSEQ) policies, management standards, legal compliance instructions and procedures.

! The IMS will comply with: ! AS/NZS 4801: Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems ! ISO 14001: Environmental

Management Systems ! ISO 9001: Quality Management

! 100% track built ! Project on time and projecting completion in June 2014 ! Operator, Maintainer (KDR) now training drivers and staffing OCC full

time ! GoldLinQ managing the interface with State Project team and ensuring

Challenges

! Bring a community along on a journey that they didn’t want to originally take;

! Building a greenfield company while delivering a complex project

! Policies; procedures; safe working processes ! Recruiting; training and build a positive culture ! Setting up IT and associated systems etc

! All testing & commissioning and training in a live environment

! Getting all parties to understand how to work effectively under a PPP once operational

! Ensuring KPIs can be met and effective mitigation activities for high potential impacts of those KPIs

! Performing well while the “nation and world” watch (no pressure)

! Hopefully running a live service while building an extension to connect the light rail to the heavy rail…. A good challenge to have!
