Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/16/17 10:36 am): Rollback: 1) Course description needs to be the subject matter

revise and/or work with Dr. Terry Senne (x81-3029). 3) Should the CIP be 50.0409 Graphic Desicn?

Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/27/17 1:57 pm): No course noted for deactivation, justification needs to include

The Department is submitting a new degree plan with an Introduction Section pertaining to all the disciplines so this change would help align with the new plan and introduce students to the discipline of graphic design.

The new degree plan reduces the number of required courses at the 3000 level for Graphic Design (with more electives available in the department via pre-existing courses in other areas), so no increase in teaching load is anticipated, even though no course is being deactivated. Additionally, as we grow the undergraduate program in design, we hope this course, which has a TCCN equivalent, will encourage transfer students to come to TWU.

As we develop a new MFA in Graphic Design over the next few years, and recruit students, this would be an adequate course for them to gain teaching experience.

This course will prepare students to become working art professionals in the world and equip them to fulfill the mission of the department, "to become leaders through excellence in the visual arts and to contribute to their communities".

This course will serve a larger portion of our students and fit more than one concentration, maximizing our faculty resources

Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/13/17 9:45 am): Rollback: 1) An undergraduate course can only be taken twice

by a student and the student receive financial aid. If a student needs to take it 3 times, another course must

be proposed showing SLO level change. 2) Please break out each SLO and course requirement into separate

field (use + symbol). 3) SLOs do not meet TWU "Guidelines for Well-written Student Learning Outcomes" -

leveling inconsistent & missing all criterion. Please work with Dr. Terry Senne and resubmit.

Justification forAddition orChange:

This course has been successfully taught more than once as a Special Topics course. As part of the newly proposed BFA in Art degree plan, the course would satisfy requirements for the 3D focus within the Intermediate and Advanced Studies section of the Studio Art track, or could be used as elective for any of the tracks.

There will be no future impact on teaching load because the course has been offered for the past four years. The number of required courses for the Sculpture focus has been reduced significantly as part of the newly proposed BFA degree plan.

Justification forAddition orChange:

This course fits into the larger changes being requested by the Department of Visual Arts in our new BFA degree plan. The two current ceramics classes at the 2000 level are being replaced with a single course with a broader approach. And at the upper level, we are looking for ways to emphasize purpose or concept rather than process. Therefore, rather than a class on the throwing process, this class will emphasize design and utility, and show a variety of fabrication methods, including throwing, but with brief exposure to other techniques as well. The course will be taught in rotation, so it will not require additional instructors.

Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/13/17 9:57 am): Rollback: 1) Is ART 1303 and enforced prerequisite?

2)Justification needs additional clarity - is this an elective or part of a degree plan? How will additional

teaching load be managed long term? 3)SLOs do not meet "Guidelines for Well Written SLOs" [PDF]. Please

revise and/or work with Dr. Terry Senne.

Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/27/17 2:50 pm): Removed "This course fulfills: Major requirements for Visual

Arts" from course description. Will be identified in catalog degree plan. No course noted for deactivation,

justification needs to include how AC will fit the additional workload of a new course into the limited teaching

resources of AC.

Terry Senne (tsenne) (12/13/17 11:55 am): All course SLOs are appropriate as written.

Justification forAddition orChange:

This course has been taught for two semesters as a special topics class. This course fulfills a need for a unique, contemporary, approach to art using drawing as the primary medium. Course may be used as studio course for art majors and an art elective for non majors.

This course as ST has been taught several times with no impact in teaching load; this change officiates the course into the curriculum. The new revised BFA degree in Studio Art, recently proposed, will reduce the number of required courses, which will reduce the overall number of courses offered.

This course fits into the larger changes being requested by the Department of Visual Arts in our new BFA degree plan. The two current ceramics classes at the 2000 level are being replaced with a single course with a broader approach. And at the upper level, we are looking for ways to emphasize purpose or concept rather than process. This class would fill the gap left by converting the handbuilding class, but it would do so in a way appropriate to a more advanced course level. In the past the class in the curriculum that covered handbuilding in depth was already mostly about making sculpture, however this course goes further in emphasizing that intention, which also opens up the possibility of exposing students to other methods in addition to handbuilding (which will be the main process used in this class).

This course is not adding to the load because the Ceramics concentration (along with Painting, Sculpture, and Photography) will cease to exist in Fall 2018 and be replaced by a Studio Art one. As such, many courses will be deactivated at a later date, as we phase out the old BFA concentrations.

Justification forAddition orChange:

This is part of the new Departmental Core we are proposing as part of our new BFA in Art Degree Plan. It is our intention to better prepare students in terms of writing skills, and this course will help significantly in that regard. It will also support our intention to better prepare students professionally, since most careers in art require good writing skills. The course would be taught by existing faculty or staff, who would rotate out other coursework, and teach this in rotation as well until we build numbers back up.

Justification forAddition orChange:

The goals of this course were previously met with a component within a senior level course. Because of past successes (Denton Community Food Center, Presbyterian Hospital Denton, Women In Film Dallas, Fill A Need Network) and the university's QEP "Learning By Doing" initiative, and along with the re-working of BFA curriculum, this course needs to be added to provide an upper level course of study within the discipline. It will be added to a rotation of courses and will not increase the teachingwork load.

This change involves a new name that is more closely aligned with similar courses taught at regional community colleges, and would fit better with the "Foundations" section of the new departmental core we are about to propose. In terms of content, this new description expands the scope of what we will expose students to in regard to artmaking using computers. When the course was first proposed, it was centered on the predominant use of computers in art at the time -- for image design. This new description would be an update still in keeping with the original intention, which was to expose students to a range of ways to make art with computers.

The Department of Visual Arts is proposing a new BFA degree plan intended to make things easier for transfer students, and simplify choices for all students. This change would create an offering that would fit into the "Introductory Electives" section of the new Department Core. It would also make the class more similar to the TCCN classes it is paired with, which often teach a range of skills rather than only handbuilding skills.
