The IAF’s branding & website renewal:The IAF’s branding & website renewal:The IAF’s branding & website renewal: A call for great moments captured!A call for great moments captured!A call for great moments captured!

By Julie Larsen, Director of Communications [email protected]

As previously announced, the IAF's Global Board approved a three-pronged communications initiative earlier this year to revitalize the Association’s brand, membership database and website, each component being linked to the other. The process to renew our brand was launched in the spring with a discovery phase that included in-person and virtual conversations, discussions on our social media channels, and several brainstorming sessions between our creative design team and our Directors of Communication, Marketing and Partnerships, and Memberships and Chapters. We look forward to sharing the outcomes of the rebranding process with all members during the October Annual General Meeting. In the meantime, you can also follow our progress on Twitter via @IAFacilitators, using the hashtag #IAFdiscovery, or via the Association’s LinkedIn forum. Alongside this work, we are advancing a revision of the Association's website and membership database, to include better and more frequent communication with current and prospective members. For the website, we have reviewed and defined our primary audiences (mainly members, old and new, as well as clients looking for facilitation services) and the hierarchy of content and information on the site. We are hard at work making sure that the Association’s website is able to clearly communicate the advantages of IAF membership in support of the Board’s overall strategic priority for growth in this area. The new site aims to feature compelling visuals too, both photos and videos, which capture how our Association works to promote and expand the use of facilitation worldwide. Here is a special request: do you have some great material that expresses the value of the IAF? Have you snapped that perfect picture, perhaps at an IAF conference or chapter meeting, that captures an ‘aha’ moment in facilitation? An article or story that expresses the amazing camaraderie and support within the IAF family?

If so, please send them to [email protected]. You can use that same email to communicate with me around any aspect of this initiative.

International Facilitation Week – October 20 – 25, 2014 WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING TO PROMOTE THE POWER OF FACILIATION?

Last year, the inaugural International Facilitation Week was a resounding success worldwide and this year is shaping up to be even bigger and better! The purpose of the week is for the Association and our members to promote the power of facilitation around the world. This year the Board and IFW Committee will have a number of tools available to members to help you:

PROMOTE the IAF, our profession, and what you do as practitioners. HOST an event or session to help people understand the innovative power of facilitation. CELEBRATE the accomplishments of our clients and communities who have used facilitation to solve prob-lems in their organizations and lives.

Our IFW web site is up and running. Feel free to get a copy of the IFW 2014 logo depicted above from the web site to use on your communication materials, advertise on your own web site, promote through your social media channels, etc. Our 2014 International Facilitation Week Facebook page is also live and active. Be sure to LIKE and FOLLOW us to keep up to date on the latest and greatest! There is even an events and newsfeed where you post your events and activities. As last year we will be hosting tweet chats and working hard to ‘trend’ @IAFacilitators and #thepoweroffacilitatiton and #facilitation, so start tweeting! A Storify page is being created so that we can all post information and pictures about our events, celebrations and accomplishments over the week. More information will follow about the details, with instructions as to how to in-clude your materials. The IAF AGM will be held on October 20/21st during that week and will provide an excellent opportunity for us to gather virtually and discuss the future of our organization, reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. Of course, the IAF Board of Director elections will also be held during the week and we encourage everyone to participate in our governance process. Our 20th anniversary committee will be celebrating the past, present and future of IAF during the week as well, so watch for historical snap shots and help us honour those who helped found the Association and laid the foundation for our profession. The IAF Historical timeline chart will also have made its way across four continents and will be pictured prominently in our celebrations.

Finally, some exciting new announcements will be made during the week which both celebrate the past and anticipate the future, including a very cool membership offer so watch closely, stay connected, and get involved. Remember this is our week to stand proud and say, “I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF FACILITATION!” Examples of some of the events that are already planned for the week:

A number of city governments are being petitioned to proclaim the week Toronto Chapter is Showcasing the Innovative Power of Facilitation during a half day event and expecting over 120 people to attend A two-day event is planned in Istanbul Malaysian Facilitator Network is hosting Izzy Gesell – Self Talk, Practiced Spontaneity and Managing Stress for Facilitators Victoria Chapter, Australia, is hosting a virtual global panel discussion following their AGM event Media blitz announcing the IAF Hall of Fame (more exciting news on that to follow) IAF is sponsoring and will be showcased at the NCDD Conference in Washington and included in their visual mapping project A full slate of workshops and courses are being offered by ICA Associates during the week across Canada And much more!

So when you have an event or activity planned for IFW 2014, please message our IFW Facebook page and we will add it to the growing list of activities.

IAF 2014 Global Board ElectionsIAF 2014 Global Board ElectionsIAF 2014 Global Board Elections Three ways to participate!Three ways to participate!Three ways to participate!

Dear IAF Members, The IAF Board Nominations & Election Committee is looking forward to ensuring that as many IAF members as possi-ble take part in the election process this year. As a member of the Association, you share in the leadership choices of the Association.

There are three ways for you to participate:

By nominating yourself or excellent IAF colleagues to stand for election

By casting your vote during the elections held from October 20 to November 2, 2014

By joining the Nominations & Elections Committee (it is not too late!)

IAF Board Elections 2014

The IAF Board consists of 16 Directors who participate in the leadership and governance of the Association as a whole. Global and Regional Directors and Officers, with exception of the Chair and Vice Chair, are elected by our members for a 2-year term and may be extended twice by standing for re-election.

Approximately half of the positions are open for election each year. In alternate years, the Board elects the Vice Chair for a one year term. The Vice Chair will then succeed the Chair in the following year for a two year term. This year the Board has appointed Noel Tan, currently Regional Director Asia, as Vice Chair for 2015.

The election procedures are defined in the IAF By-Laws and Board Nominations and Elections Policy & Procedures which you will find on our website when logged in as member.

Following positions are open to all IAF members in the 2014 IAF Board Elections:

Secretary (1 year term, to complete the incumbent’s term)

Treasurer (2 year term)

Director of Membership and Chapters (2 year term)

Director of Professional Development (2 year term)

Five Regional Director positions will be elected by the members of those regions:

Regional Director for Africa (2 year term)

Regional Director for Asia (1 year term, to complete the incumbent’s term)

Regional Director for Europe, Middle East and North Africa (2 year term)

Regional Director for Oceania (2 year term)

Regional Director for USA (2 year term) Descriptions of all director and officer roles are available on the IAF website at: http://www.iaf-world.org/AboutIAF/BoardofDirectors.aspx

MAKE A COMMITMENT TO VOTE in the 2014 IAF Board Elections!

We anticipate holding the elections for the Global Board between October 20 and November 2, 2014. Each member in good standing will receive an email with a direct link to the elections site.

JOIN the IAF Nominations and Election Committee

It is the committee’s responsibility to review the applications and contact the nominees’ references to ensure that the candidates meet the necessary requirements, skills and expertise to govern and manage the Association effectively. The committee will then prepare the election platform and invite you to cast your vote online. Because we work together as a team, the time commitment is shared among us and therefore not onerous for any one of us! If you like to join the 2014 Committee please be in touch with Ulla by email, see contact details below.

Spring has sprung in the southern hemisphere and that means gardens bloom and sunlight warming the skin again and new way of seeing. As each new season comes, I am reminded to look differently at the world and to try something new.

There is so much going on across IAF from conferences, certifications and chapter events that one really feels a part of a dynamic and happening organisation. There are plenty of opportunities to give and receive. This month read Mike Walsh’s reflection on the Singapore Conference, I liked the idea of 21 word feedbacks, if you can say it in fewer words then it is likely to be more meaningful than many words. The 2014 International Facilitation Week is on again during 20th-26th October. The aim is to publicise the power of facilitation and create an international sense of identity and cohesion. IAF Members and non-members are encouraged to organise activities during the Week and promote them as part of International Facilitation Week. What plans are you involved in organising or attending? Last but not least the Global Board Elections are coming up soon and as we benefit from the work of the IAF, Ulla Wyckoff Tomlinson outlines three ways to get involved with keeping the value high and creating more, nominations are due by 26th September. Reflections on the Singapore ConferenceReflections on the Singapore ConferenceReflections on the Singapore Conference

By Mike Walsh, Regional Director – Oceania [email protected]

One of the best things about being a member of a global organisation like the IAF is the exposure to the energy of facilitation in different cultures, such happened at the Singapore IAF Conference. I found myself astonished, delight-ed, provoked and exhausted for a short while, and energised ever since. I have great memories of Wolfie Yu's work-shop on Innovation amongst lots of thoughts and experiences. Wolfie had set up an extraordinary room, innovative in its design, in fact beautiful and such a light touch to facilitation that it was mesmerising. Follow this link for more of that story: http://bit.ly/1sUsYxT. Members at the IAF Asia conference were asked to give a 21 words or less report back. Here is what they said:

The session on Positive Deviance absolutely stood out and affirmed a deeply held paradigm - that in 'stuck systems' -

go to where there is health or life in the system - and explore/understand with an open mind and heart - 'why' this is

so . Tom Schwartz

Attending sessions on drama and storytelling, I picked up some gems to squeeze in-between more prescriptive process

blocks. Aiming for seamlessness. Will Bessen

The IAF Asia conference highlighted the value of designing for diversity and providing a range of contrasting energies

in our workshops. Andrew Huffer

My 6th IAF outside Oceania Region. What a buzz! Learning, networking, reflecting on my practice as a facilitator and

dancing! Rhonda Tranks

I loved the diversity! Diversity of people, choice of sessions and ideas, tools, techniques, cultures, music, food and

applied improv. Moira Deslandes

SPACE is a really well put together whole systems approach to organisational development by Kazu Katori and Max

Watanabe which all facilitators should know about. Jane Hudson
