How To Order
Standard Cylinders
Vickers has created an easy system forordering Series VN/VP Cylinders. Thissystem has been developed to improveour service to you. The model codeconsists of sixteen alpha-numeric digitswhich fully describe the most commonstandard options offered on SeriesVN/VP cylinders.
To specify your Series VN/VP cylinder, review the following pages for a fulldescription of each option available andselect the desired code.
This model code system will:
Simplify the re-order process. Each Vickers Series VN/VP cylinder isassigned a sixteen digit model code. That code is unique to a particularcylinder description. That way, whenyou re-order your Series VN/VPcylinder, you’re assured of exactly thesame top quality cylinder design.
Improve identification.Every Series VN/VP cylinder has itssixteen digit model code clearlylabeled on the product. Each sixteendigit code completely describes aspecific cylinder. This allows seals andreplacement components to be easilyidentified in the field.
Facilitate communications. This fully descriptive model codesystem allows you to work directly withyour local Vickers sales engineer toidentify and service your Vickerscylinder.
NOTESee pages 6 and 7 for a summaryof model code options.
Custom Cylinders
New Cylinders
Although the model code has beenarranged to cover the vast majority ofavailable options, there will beoccasions when you require an optionwhich cannot be coded. Whenspecifying such an option, enter an “X”for the appropriate item in the sixteendigit model code, then describe yourrequirements. For example, if you havean application which requires a customthread on the end of the piston rod, enter an “X” for item 7. Then add a fulldescription at the end of the modelcode, such as “With 3.25 inch total rodprojection and M22 x 1.5 thread 1.375inches long.” The cylinder will then begiven a unique five digit design numberon receipt of order (as explained below).
Replacement Cylinders
Every Vickers custom cylinder isassigned a unique design number. Thisnumber is contained in the last fivedigits of the sixteen digit model code, and item 12 is always an alphacharacter. In other words, the “Stroke”and “Extra Rod Projection” locations(items 12 through 16) become the“Design Number” items for customcylinders. When ordering a replacementcylinder, simply give the sixteen digitmodel code or the five digit designnumber to your local Vickers SalesRepresentative.
Replacement Parts
Each design number is stored in a quickretrieval computerized storage system. This gives our field salesrepresentatives rapid access to assistyou in identifying and specifying genuineVickers replacement parts.

Available Mountings
The variety of standard ANSI/NFPAmountings available in the Series VN/VPgives you a broad selection to match theproper mount to your application.Vickers offers rigid mounts (includingside lug mounts, flange mounts, andextended tie rod mounts) and swivelmounts (including clevis mounts andtrunnion mounts). A guide to propermount selection is provided on pages #through ##. For custom mounts, enter“XX” for model code positions 3 and 4,and give a detailed description withdrawings. Series VN/VP cylinders areavailable in all mounting styles listed.
Selecting theProper Mounting
Just as the cylinder bore must be sizedto provide the proper force for anapplication, a cylinder mounting that canabsorb these application forces mustalso be specified. Note: In the mountinginformation, some mounts have beendownrated to minimize deflection. Forapplications where the motion is linearand parallel to the cylinder rod motion, arigid mount is recommended. Forcurvilinear motion, a swivel mountshould be chosen. The specifics of eachapplication dictate the correct mountingstyle.

Code 02 Tapped Mounts(ANSI MS4)
Tapped mounts are for moving loadsalong a flat guided surface as in acarriage along rails. The mountingsurface should be flat and parallel to thecenterline of the piston rod.
The load should be guided to traversealong the centerline of the piston rod.The frame on which the cylinder ismounted must be sufficiently rigid toresist bending moments.
NOTEFor strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
With unsupported loads, the bearingmust absorb more force. For theseapplications, the larger available rod isrecommended, and stop tubes shouldbe considered.

Code 03 End Lug Mounts(ANSI MS7)
End lug mounts are for moving loadsalong a flat guided surface as in acarriage along rails. The mountingsurface should be flat and parallel to thecenterline of the piston rod.
The load should be guided to traversealong the centerline of the piston rod.The frame on which the cylinder ismounted must be sufficiently rigid toresist bending moments.
NOTELimit operating pressure to 400 psi(27 bar) non-shock hydraulic forminimum deflection.
For strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
With unsupported loads, the bearingmust absorb more force. For theseapplications, the larger available rod isrecommended, and stop tubes shouldbe considered.

These mounts are ideal for straight lineforce transfer applications in which thecylinder is used in tension (pulling). Themounting surface should be flat and therod end cartridge should be piloted intoit.
The frame on which the cylinder ismounted must be sufficiently rigid toresist bending moments.
NOTEFor strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
The force of the load should beperpendicular to the mounting surfaceand parallel to the centerline of thepiston rod. For eccentric loads, thelarger of the two available rods in eachbore size is recommended. Stop tubesshould also be considered.

Code 08 Head SquareMounts (ANSI ME3)
These mounts are ideal for straight lineforce transfer applications in which thecylinder is used in tension (pulling). The mounting surface should be flat, and the rod end cartridge should bepiloted into it.

Code 10 Fixed Clevis(MP1)
These mounts can be used both incompression (push) and tension (pull).Care must be exercised to prevent rodbuckling in compression applicationswith long strokes.
NOTEFor strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
The centerline of the machine memberthat attaches to the swivel pin must beperpendicular to the centerline of thepiston rod and the curved path must bein one place only. Any misalignment willcause excess side loading on thebearing and piston. This could lead topremature failure.

Code 17 Head TrunnionMounts (ANSI MT1)
These mounts are for applications inwhich the machine member travels in acurved path in one plane.
The mount can be used both incompression (push) and tension (pull)applications. When used in compressionapplications, head trunnion mountsprovide a longer maximum stroke thancap trunnion mounts.
NOTEFor strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
It is recommended that rigidly mountedpillow blocks with bearings at least aslong as the trunnion pins be used. Thepillow blocks should be installed asclose to the shoulder of the trunnion aspossible.

These mounts are for straight line forcetransfer applications. Both endsextended tie rod mounts are suited fortension and compression applications orapplications where additional hardwareis to be attached to cylinders.
The mounting surface should be flat andthe frame on which the cylinder ismounted must be sufficiently rigid toresist bending moments.
Once fitted into the applicationframework, the nuts which are providedshould be torqued to the values listed inthe right column table.
NOTEFor strokes in excess of 30 inches, see “Stop Tube Selection” on page 45.
The force on the rod should beperpendicular to the mounting surfaceand coincide with the centerline of thepiston rod. For eccentric loads, thelarger of the two available rods in eachbore size is recommended. Stop tubesshould also be considered.

Code 45 Angle Mounts
(ANSI MS1)
Angle mounts are for moving loadsalong a flat guided surface as in acarriage along rails.
For applications with unsupported loads, the bearing must absorb more force. The larger available rod isrecommended, and stop tubes shouldbe considered.

Switches for 3/4 thru 8 inch Bore Cylinders
Vickers utilizes a magnetically operated,non-contact sensing system consistingof a magnet in the piston, and a sensingswitch clamped to the cylinder tie rod.
One or more switches may be mountedto provide an indication of pistonposition.
Switches use vinyl molded cable, andare supplied with adjustable mountingbrackets allowing the switches to besecurely positioned anywhere along therange of piston travel.
LED indicator lights facilitate installationand troubleshooting.
Reed Switch Working Principle
Reed switch sensors containhermetically sealed reed elements(mechanical contacts) which are open intheir normal state. When a magneticfield moves within proximity of theswitch, magnetism is induced into theleads and forces the contacts to close.

Application Recommendations andPrecautions
To provide maximum reliability:
1. Always stay within the specificationsand power rating limitations of theunit installed.
2. Primary and control circuit wiringshould not be mixed in the sameconduit.
Motors will produce high pulses thatwill be introduced into the controlwiring if the wiring is carried in thesame conduit.
3. Never connect the switch without aload present. The switch will bedestroyed.
4. Some electrical loads may becapacitive. Capacitive loading mayoccur due to distributed capacity incable runs over 25 feet. Use switchModel PS7-24 whenever capacitiveloading may occur.
Hall Effect/Magnetoresistive WorkingPrinciple
The solid state (no moving parts)magnetoresistive sensor responds to aparallel magnetic pole by providing adigital signal to the output control circuit.this technique enables the sensing ofweak magnetic fields, with no limit to themaximum strength of the magnetic field.

In order to obtain optimum performanceand long life, magnetically operated limitswitches should not be subjected to:(1) strong magnetic fields, (2) extremetemperature, and (3) excessive ferrousfiling or chip buildup.
Improper wiring may damage or destroythe switch. The wiring diagram, alongwith the listed power ratings, must becarefully observed before connectingpower to the switch.
Lower power switches are designed forsignaling electronic circuits. Do not useon relay loads or with incandescentbulbs. Resistive loads only.

Piston Rod Diameter Selection:
Applications requiring long extend(push) strokes may require oversizepiston rod diameters to preventbuckling. To determine the correct roddiameter for your application, followthese simple steps:
1. Select the force from the CylinderForce and Volume Chart that isrequired for your application.
Force = Piston Surface Area Operating Pressure
2. From the Cylinder MountingDiagrams select the mounting stylebeing used.
3. With the piston rod fully extended, calculate the value of D (in inches)using the formula shown or thecylinder mounting diagram selectedin step #2.
4. Locate the value of D (in inches) atthe bottom of the Selection Chart.Enter the chart at this point andmove vertically upward untilintersecting with the horizontal linerepresenting the required thrustwhich was selected in step #1. Theband within which these linesintersect represents the minimumrecommended piston rod diameter.
Stop Tube Selection:
Stop tubes enhance the transverse loadcarrying capability of a long strokecylinder by increasing the distancebetween the piston and rod bearing atfull extension. When the value of D(calculated from the piston rod diameterselection instructions above) is less than40, a stop tube is not required. However, if D is 40 or more, 1 of stoptube is recommended for every 10 (orfraction thereof) over 40.
