FEATURED BRIC TECHNOLOGIES6

BRIC Engineered Systems

From small fighter jets to large cargo planes, railcars, ships, and many other applications, BRIC RoboticCoating Removal Systems (RCRS) can fit a vast rangeof applications across industries. Laser technology isa viable environmentally friendly method for removingvarious coatings from a variety of substrates, including composites, glass, metals, and plastics. AtBRIC, we have brought this technology to theforefront. Our proven unique green process canreduce operation costs and improve productivity inmanufacturing, and repair depots across a range ofindustries.

BRIC’s unique laser decoating system reduce hazard-ous materials usage and disposal by 100%. The onlysolid waste generated for disposal consists of theablated inorganic particulates, which represents afraction of the volume of coating removed. Allorganics are converted to gases that can be exhausteddirectly to the atmosphere. The decrease in hazardouswaste along with the decrease in the amount ofsolvents on site may reduce or eliminate the need forpermits and lessen regulatory burdens such asreporting, book-keeping and site inspections. TheBRIC laser based decoating process greatly reduceshealth and safety risks due to the elimination ofexposure to hazardous chemicals and decoatingresidues, resulting in a people friendly workenvironment.

Fully automated with BRIC robotic technology, software intelligence and integration know-how, BRICRobotic Coating Removal System (RCRS) can fit intomany facilities at various budget levels. Removal of

coatings and surface preparation for a range ofsubstrates including coatings such as paint, primer,RAM and other advanced coatings can be done safely, reliably, and quickly. The productivity of each systemis a function of the number of robots; more robotsmeans faster effective strip rates, thus reduced flowdays. As the systems are fully automated, it requiresonly one operator to monitor the process. Eachsystem is customized to suit the end-user, withservice options for warranty, routine or emergencyservice and preventive maintenance inspections.

Aerospace ApplicationsAircraft operate in a very demanding environment, requiring the use of protective materials that arechemically “hard” and of the utmost integrity, otherwise defects can become the source ofcorrosion, and ultimate system failure. On average,“working” aircraft require de-coating and re-coatingevery three to five years, in order to comply withregulatory standards. Chemically “hard” materials arevery difficult to remove, and traditionally have beenstripped using aggressive chemical and abrasive

Features and Benefits of OurCoating Removal Technology• No hazardous waste means your operatingcosts will be greatly reduced.

• Fully automated process reduces your overalllabour costs.

• Proven on top coats, primer, mil spec, RAM,powder, sealants, and conductive coatings.

• Safe work environment improves workermorale and health.

• Non-kinetic energy process eliminatesdamage to substrate.

• Selective stripping is easily achieved reducing workload.

• Reduced masking requirements increasesproduction capacity.

• Applicable in a broad range of industriesincluding aerospace, heavy industry, transportation, and manufacturing.

techniques. These methods are both damaging to theaircraft structure (thus limiting its operational lifetime),and create a significant source of gaseous, liquid andsolid hazardous effluents. Such undesirable materialsincrease atmospheric carbon dioxide loads, leach intoour water-tables and exist as potentially carcinogenicsources.

Almost all wastes associated with the current chemicalremoval process is eliminated by the implementationof the BRIC RCRS. The cost benefit analysis showedthat the implementation of one BRIC RCRS, at onedepot, to strip only off-aircraft components forapproximately sixty two aircrafts per year, results in alabour savings of approximately $7,400,000., anannual materials cost savings of approximately$113,600., and a waste management cost avoidanceof approximately $60,000. The total annual operatingcost savings equals approximately $7,500,000.

A life cycle cost analysis demonstrated thatimplementation and use of the BRIC RCRS for coatingremoval at one depot would result in fifteen year lifecycle cost savings greater than $111,000,000. Withthe BRIC RCRS integrated process control, precisioncoating removal is usually achievable, includingselectively stripping only the top coating(s), orstripping down to a desired depth; features typicallynot available through traditional methods. Additionally, process data can be saved and utilized for furtheranalysis to assist in the determination of any under-lining defects in the substrate. The process data canalso determine and store data identifying differencesin coating layers; for example if the primer coatchanges from one area to another; or if an area has anadditional layer not observed elsewhere. Such datacan achieve cost and time savings downstream of theremoval process, adding indirect benefits to theoverall implementation of a BRIC RCRS. The benefits, and cost savings associated with the BRIC RCRSmake it an ideal solution for many facilities thatundergo coating removal processes.

BRIC Engineered Systems

The BRIC Intelligent Coating System (ICS) makes itpossible to automate coating processes that werenot historically feasible. Removing people from thepaint booth is necessary in order to eliminateexposure to toxic chemicals. Automation reducespaint usage — usually by 30%, thereby improvingthe overall environmental impact, not to mentioncost savings in reduced paint usage.

Automation was only feasible in applications withfew part numbers and high volume. Now with theBRIC ICS, robot part programming is eliminated, making automation for small batches with high partvariability a reality. High mix, low volume is nolonger a barrier to paint automation.

The BRIC ICS is an integrated software solution forcoating applications where part programming is notideal, or even possible. In applications where eachpart is bound to have some variation from one tothe next, or where each part may not be located inthe exact same spot every time, our BRIC ICS offersa solution. The ICS uses the Visual Grabber, for 3D

data capture of information about the part such asits surface curvature and relative location. The ICSkernel analyzes the data capture to identify surfacefeatures and sections to be coated. Coatinginstructions are then matched to the parsed coatingsection data where robot paths can be defined andsent to the robot controller for trajectory execution. All this takes pace in real time, within 2 minutes.

The coating instructions integrated with the partsfeatures, are the painter’s knowledge and thisprovides constraints to the robot path planningmodule. With the BRIC ICS, the key element is theprocess knowledge database that can becontinuously improved. It also provides flexibility asthere are no defined restrictions in the number ofobject families, surface features, or coatinginstructions. The robot path planner is customizedto suit the robot design and includes avoidance ofsingularities, and collisions, and is compatible withmany robot makes, including BRIC robots.

Fully automated paint processes provide betterquality, reduced paint usage, increased capacity andan improved worker environment. And now, with theBRIC ICS, any paint facility can be automatedregardless of the parts being painted, thuseliminating any reasons to not move forward withautomated coating equipment. BRIC provides a fullturn-key approach, with on-site training andextensive after sales support. No reasons left to notautomate and improve your bottom line.
