Assessing Competency

Page 5: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

• tasks need to cover all of the elements for that unit of competency that come from the training package.

• students must be given detailed specifications for the task so that they have a clear understanding of what is required, how it will be assessed, and what competencies are required.

• students need to be assessed as being competent in the units prior to assessment on the tasks. Five criteria each worth five marks are used to assess level of performance

Assessment

Page 6: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

At least two of the following modes of assessment must be used:

• Work Performance• Work Project• Product• Portfolio

Naturally not all methods of assessment will be appropriate for all of the tasks.

Methods of Assessment

Page 7: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

1. Three assessment tasks2. Minimum of two task types3. No task should take longer than 100 hours (Software Apps),

110 hours (General) or 95 hours (Network)4. All units of competence must be covered.5. The assessment for each task should cover roughly the

same amount of nominal hours per unit.6. Assessment tasks must be discrete and separate – work from

one task cannot be used in another task.7. Assessment plans need to be entered into VASS by the

deadline nominated by VCAA (usually in July).

Assessment

Page 8: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

8. Student work must be able to be authenticated; however, remember that at the Certificate III level, students can work unsupervised. Therefore tasks may or may not be separate from normal classroom activities. Tasks can be split across a number of lessons and a number of weeks – they do not need to be done in one hit.

Tasks will generally not be the same as classroom activities that are taught as part of a tutorial, etc.

Assessment (cont.)

Page 9: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

• Five criteria• Each criteria marked out of 5 (1 – Low; 3 – Medium; 5 – High)• Total allocation of marks = 25• Minimum possible is 5• Students can only be assessed and given a mark if they have been previously deemed to be competent in the elements that are being assessed.

Making an Assessment

Page 10: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

• The assessor should set appropriate and achievable submission dates• If an assessment task is not submitted, a mark of NA should be recorded for that task. • Work can be re-submitted to gain competency, but not to increase a study score.Study scores need to be entered into VASS.

Authentication

Acceptable: incorporation of ideas or material derived from other sources but which has beentransformed; prompting and general advice from another person which leads to refinements and/or self-correction.

Other details

Page 11: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

• Must state that all unacknowledged work is theirs• Must acknowledge all materials and resources used• Must not receive undue assistance• Must not submit the same piece of work for two different tasks• Must not knowingly help another student breach the rules• Must ensure an alternative system is available in case of computer or printer malfunction. • Must have their own backup saved in a separate location.

Student Responsibilities

Task type 1: Work Performance

Assessment:Should be observation Supported by questions

Observation and response to questions need to be recorded in a checklist (see attached hand out).

Task type 2: Work Project

Designed to be completed in the workplace

Students need to gather first hand and second hand data

Task must comprise of either:(a) Investigation of work procedure – an analysis of client’s network

- analysis of their software needs - analysis of their hardware

(b) Planning exercise – planning for a particular procedure- planning for better help desk operations- planning for fewer data input errors

Page 15: VCE VET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCORED ASSESSMENT.

Task type 2: Work Project (cont.)

(c) Problem solving exercise – identify a workplace problem, outline strategies to solve it.

- hard to print out reports as printer is too old; solution is …- customers want to be able to view products from home ….

• practical exercises/activities

•documentation of a work performance

•workbooks

•written/oral short answers
