PLAYING UCONN & BIG EAST OPPONENTSTHE CONNECTICUT SERIES

★ Meeting between schools: 2nd ★ Series Record: Vanderbilt leads, 1-0 ★ Only Meeting: Vanderbilt 27, Connecuticut 24 (2002) ★ Vanderbilt record on the road: 0-0 ★ Vanderbilt record in Nashville: 1-0

SEC VS. THE BIG EAST Vanderbilt will attempt to become the fourth SEC team this year to defeat a Big East squad. Earlier this year, SEC teams Kentucky, Florida and LSU topped Big East foes.

VANDERBILT VS. BIG EAST FOES

Vanderbilt is 10-7-1 all-time vs. current members of the Big East Conference. In its last outing against a Big East foe, Vanderbilt dropped a 37-34 home loss to Rutgers after owning a three-touchdown lead before halftime.

Big East Conference Record LastCincinnati 4-3 1994Connecticut 1-0 2002Louisville 2-0-1 1974Rutgers 2-1 2004Syracuse 0-2 1991West Virginia 1-1 1962 ALL-TIME vs. Big East 10-7-1

'DORES SEEK BACK-TO-BACK WINS It's been exactly two years since Vanderbilt posted consecutive victories. The Commodores will seek a second straight win at Connecticut Saturday after defeating Ole Miss 28-14 on Sept. 18. Vanderbilt last won consecutive games in 2008 when it defeated Ole Miss (Sept. 20) and Auburn (Oct. 4). Those wins capped a 5-0 start to Vanderbilt's 2008 campaign.

RESULTS AFTER AN OFF WEEK

The Commodores are 2-3 in their last five games coming off a bye week. Vanderbilt was idle last Saturday. Twice in the last five years – 2009 and 2006 – Vanderbilt played without the benefit of an off week. Neither season went well: 2-10 in 2009 and 4-8 in 2006. In 2008, the Commodores benefited from two bye weeks to achieve the team's first postseason appearance in more than two decades. They went 1-1 in games played after an idle week that season.

SEEKING BACK-TO-BACK ROAD WINS

The Commodores return to action Saturday against Connecticut looking for consecutive road victories for the first time in more than two years. Vanderbilt captured its first win of the season Sept. 18 at Oxford, Miss., defeating Ole Miss 28-14. The last time Vanderbilt won consecutive road games was early in the 2008 campaign when they registered victories at Miami Ohio (34-13, Aug. 28) and at Ole Miss (23-17, Sept. 20).

CALDWELL GETS EARLY ROAD WIN

When the Commodores defeated Ole Miss, it enabled Robbie Caldwell to accomplish a feat the previous six Vanderbilt head coaches could not achieve: claim victory in their road debut. The last Commodore first-year coach to walk away from his first road contest with a win since Fred Pancoast departed Houston on Sept. 20, 1975 as a 9-6 victor over Rice.

FISHER FACES COLLEGE TEAMMATE Vanderbilt receivers coach/passing game coordinator Charlie Fisher will face a former college teammate when the Commodores and Huskies play Saturday. Fisher played at Springfield (Mass.) College from 1977-80. Hank Hughes, UCONN's DL coach and assistant head coach for defense, was two years ahead of Fisher at Springfield College, starting as a linebacker. Hughes also coached with current Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Jimmy Kiser for one year (2000) at the University of Memphis.

PREP TEAMMATES FACE OFF Two Commodores – T.J. Greenstone (R-Jr., DT) and Charlie Goro (R-Fr., QB) – will face prep teammates this Saturday. Greenstone was a standout at Collins Hill (Ga.) H.S., the same school that produced UCONN QB Michael Box. Goro and UCONN's Adam Mueller (Fr., SN) were teammates on a Illinois state champion Park Ridge Maine South squad.

RUNNING ATTACK BY COMMITTEE

LONE WIN FOR SEC EAST Vanderbilt's 28-14 victory over Ole Miss is the only win thus far by an SEC East squad over their SEC West counterparts. Through Week 4, the SEC West is 4-1 against SEC East teams.

Vanderbilt used a four-player rotation at running back in its win at Ole Miss. Sophomores Zac Stacy and Warren norman shared carries with redshirt freshman Wesley Tate and redshirt senior Kennard Reeves against the Rebels, combining for 186 yards on 33 carries. QB Larry Smith also added 35 rushing yards to the attack. Norman topped the corps with 111 rushing yards, including an 80-yarder that gave Vanderbilt a 21-14 lead. Stacy added 46 yards, and produced the first Commodore score on a 35-yard rush. Tate enjoyed his best day in a Commodore uniform, rushing for 35 yards on 10 carries. Reeves added a pair of productive rushes, gaining 11 yards.

VANDERBILT NOTESCALDWELL: FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH

Robbie Caldwell, the 26th head coach in Vanderbilt football history, will be one of just 11 first-time head coaches in the NCAA FBS subdivision this season. Caldwell, a veteran of more than three decades of collegiate coaching, was named to replace Bobby Johnson at Vanderbilt on July 14th following Johnson's unexpected retirement. Caldwell and Kentucky mentor Joker Phillips are the SEC's only first-time head coaches this year. A third, Derek Dooley of Tennessee, is in his initial year after having served as Louisiana Tech's head coach. Besides Caldwell and Phillips, other first-time FCS head coaches are Sonny Dykes (La. Tech), Dan Enos (Central Michigan), Jimbo Fisher (Florida State), John "Doc" Holliday (Marshall), Mike MacIntyre (San Jose State), Larry Porter (Memphis), Jeff Quinn (Buffalo), Charlie Strong (Louisville) and Willie Taggart (Western Kentucky). Caldwell has the most collegiate coaching experience of the 11 coaches, with Holliday having the second longest tenure. Vanderbilt is one of 23 NCAA FBS schools to feature a new head coach roaming the sidelines in 2010.

HAND NEWEST COMMODORE COACH Herb Hand, a veteran offensive coach with excellent credentials, is the newest Vanderbilt coach. Hired in early August, Hand serves as offensive line coach and is the first staff hire by Robbie Caldwell. Hand came to Vanderbilt after three years at the University of Tulsa, a tenure that featured some of the NCAA's most productive offenses. As Tulsa's offensive coordinator, Hand directed 2007 and 2008 Hurricane offenses that topped the nation. Tulsa's 2008 unit averaged 570 yards and 47 points, both tops in the NCAA. Hand also spent six successful years with the University of West Virginia's productive spread offense before going to Tulsa.

VANDERBILT IN 2010: LOTS OF YOUTH

Looking for a quick description for Robbie Caldwell's first Vanderbilt squad? Youthful would work. Three weeks into the season the list of Commodores seeing action features 21 sophomores, nine redshirt freshmen and 10 true freshmen. Nearly 30 sophomores and freshmen are listed on the Vanderbilt two-team depth chart. Only eight Commodore seniors have contributed this season.

DUTIES CHANGE FOR SIX ASSISTANTS Six assistant coaches have new responsibilities this season. ★ Longtime defensive coordinator Bruce Fowler will assist Caldwell as assistant head coach. He will also mentor linebackers. ★ Jamie Bryant becomes the sole defensive coordinator and continues as the secondary coach. ★ Rick Logo has added recruiting coordinator duties to his primary role as defensive tackles coach. ★ Running backs coach Des Kitchings has added running game coordinator duties. ★ Mike Pelton, hired last spring, will coach defensive ends. ★ Ted Cain, former offensive coordinator, will serve as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.

THIRTEEN NEW STARTERS THIS YEAR

Thirteen Commodore players – seven on defense, five on offense and one on special teams – enjoyed their first career starts through the team's first three games. Four defensive backs and three offensive linemen were among the first time starters. Two Commodores – nate Campbell (R-Sr., LB) and Kenny Ladler (Fr., safety) – earned their first starts in the Ole Miss win. Other defensive players besides Campbell and Ladler to earn ini-tial starts this year are Archibald Barnes (R-So., LB), Eddie Foster (So., cornerback), Jay Fullam (R-Fr., safety), Rob Lohr (R-So., defensive tackle) and Trey Wilson (So., cornerback). The following offensive players have made their first career starts this year: Jabo Burrow (R-So., left guard), Wesley Johnson (R-Fr., left tackle), Jonathan Krause (Fr., WR), Caleb Welchans (R-So., right tackle) and Turner Wimberly (R-Sr., wide receiver). Punter Richard Kent (R-So.) also is a first-year starter.

TEN TRUE FRESHMEN SEE ACTION Ten Commodore true freshmen have played this action. Two freshmen, WR Jonathan Krause and safety Kenny Ladler, started in the win at Ole Miss. Other true freshmen seeing early-season action besides Krause and Ladler are Karl Butler (safety), Steven Clarke (DB), Chase Garnham (LB), Andre Hal (DB), Fitz Lassing (TE), Jordan Matthews (WR), Andre Simmons (safety), Carey Spear (kicker).

PLAYERS SEEING FIRST COLLEGE ACTION Twenty-one Commodores have played their first collegiate snaps this season. First-time contributors in the season opener were Mylon Brown (R-Fr., OG), Jabo Burrow (R-So., OG), Karl Butler (safety), Steven Clarke (Fr., RB/DB), Jay Fullam (R-Fr., safety), Chase Garnham (Fr., LB), Andre Hal (Fr., DB), Wesley Johnson (R-Fr., OT), Mason Johnston (R-Fr., TE), Richard Kent (R-So., P), Jonathan Krause (Fr., WR), Kenny Ladler (Fr., safety), Fitz Lassing (Fr., TE), Taylor Loftley (R-So., DT), Reece Lovell (R-Fr., RB), Jordan Matthews (Fr., WR), Walker May (R-Fr., DE), Marc Panu (R-Fr., DT), Andre Simmons (Fr., safety), Carey Spear (Fr., PK) and Wesley Tate (R-Fr., RB).

CommoDoRE NotES

Punter Richard Kent (R-Fr.) is off to a stellar season in his first year as the starter. Kent continued his excellent early-season performance in the win at Ole Miss, earning consideration for SEC Specialist of the Week honors after posting a 39.1-yard net average on nine punts. In the second half alone, Kent forced Ole Miss to start drives deepin its own territory. Four of the Rebels' last five drives started inside the Ole Miss 15-yard line. Three of those drives followed a Kent punt. Kent has been incredibly efficient. He has allowed just two yards on five punt returns (0.2-yard average). Of his NCAA-leading 25 punts, only one has resulted in a touchback. Nine punts have been downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

KENT EXPERIENCES PUNTING SUCCESS

★ With its 28-14 victory, the Commodores are 4-2 against Ole Miss in its last six meetings. Vanderbilt has also captured the last two games played at Ole Miss. Recent games in Oxford have been close. In the last seven games played on the Ole Miss campus, the Commodores and Rebels are separated by just five points (191-186 in favor of Ole Miss). ★ Vanderbilt’s 13-play, 96-yard drive capped by a 35-yard touchdown run by Zac Stacy in the second quarter were the most plays run in a Commodore TD drive by Vanderbilt since the Wake Forest game on Nov. 29, 2008. It also marked the team's longest TD drive in terms of yardage since a 97-yard possession at Duke on Oct. 28, 2006. ★ Tim Fugger (R-Jr., DE) notched a forced fumble in his third consecutive game. He tops the SEC – and shares the NCAA lead – with three forced fumbles. ★ Vanderbilt’s 28 points were the most against an SEC opponent since the Commodores scored 31 at Kentucky on Nov. 15, 2008. ★ The Commodores forced three Ole Miss turnovers, earning a 3-0 advantage in turnover margin. Vanderbilt turned two of Rebel miscues into touchdowns: DB Eddie Foster's 21-yard interception return and QB Larry Smith's 15-yard rush one play after a forced fumble by LB John Stokes. ★ Warren norman (So., RB) topped the Commodores with 111 rushing yards, the second highest single-game total of his 15-game Vanderbilt career. Norman also surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau for career rushing yards during the game. Norman's 80-yard rush for a score in the third quarter equalled the longest carry ever by a Commodore RB. The longest carry in team history is a 81-yard fake punt by Bill Marinangel in 1996. ★ John Stokes (Sr., LB) produced a career-best performance outing against Ole Miss. Stokes also set a career high with 10 total tackles, and added a key forced fumble in the fourth quarter. ★ Eddie Foster (So., DB) notched the first Commodore defensivetouchdown in more than a year, returning on a 21-yard INT return. It was the first interception return for a score – and Vanderbilt defensive score overall – since safety Reshard Langford scored from 42 yards against Tennessee on Dec. 22, 2008. ★ Kenny Ladler (Fr., safety) earned his first career start. Subbing for Jay Fullam, Ladler had a fumble recovery and four solo tackles – including a stop on 4th & 1 in the fourth quarter. ★ Vanderbilt scored first in a game, snapping a 10-game streak that witnessed opponents registering the initial points. ★ Vanderbilt’s 227 rushing yards were the most against an SEC opponent since the Commodores gained 239 yards against Kentucky on Nov. 10, 2007. ★ Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB) reached double digits in tackles (10 total) for the second time this season – and fifth time in his last seven games. ★ Vanderbilt matched its biggest winning margin against an SEC foe (14 points) since defeating Mississippi State by 18 points (31-13)on Oct. 2, 2004. ★ Sean Richardson finished the game with 11 total tackles, a season high for the junior safety. Richardson ranks among the SEC leaders, averaging 9.7 tackles a game.

NOTES FROM OLE MISS GAME WINNING TREND: 100-YARD RUSHERS Success in the Vanderbilt running game leads to team success. Dating back to 2003, Vanderbilt has won every game in which its rushing attack features a 100-yard rusher. Warren norman's 111 rushing yards was a key factor in the Commodores' 28-14 victory at Ole Miss. Since the 2003 opener, Vanderbilt is 14-0 when a running back reaches 100 rushing yards. The Commodores also had a 100-yard rusher (Kwane Doster, 109 yards) in their previous encounter against Connecticut.

★ Vanderbilt has committed just two turnovers – one interception and one fumble – through three games.★ The Commodores are converting on only 22 percent of their third-down conversions. Opponents are converting as a 36% rate.★ John Stokes (Sr., LB) surpassed the 100-tackle plateau for career tackles at Ole Miss.★ Larry Smith (R-Jr., QB) needs 11 yards of total offense to reach 2,000 for his career. ★ Eddie Foster (So., DB) is just two tackles shy of matching his 2009 total. He also ranks second on team with four tackles for loss.

TIDBITS FROM THE EARLY SEASON

TURNOVER MARGIN ADVANTAGE Through three games, the Commodores rank among the SEC leaders with a turnover margin of +3. Only Florida (+8) has performed better among SEC teams. Turnovers were a major reason why Vanderbilt departed Ole Miss with a win. The Commodores forced three turnovers, resulting in 14 points, while committing no miscues.

STRUGGLING WITH PENALTIES

One trend the Commodores need to reverse is excessive penalties. Vanderbilt ranks 12th in the SEC in penalty yardage (66.0 ypg). Opponents are being flagged for just 31.7 yards a game.

Vanderbilt Active Career Leaders

Adam Smotherman's consecutive start streak of 23 games ended against Northwestern when he did not dress due to an injury. It was the team's second longest active streak, trailing only LB Chris Marve (28). Smotherman, a redshirt senior defensive tackle, hopes to return to the field in October after sustaining an ACL injury suffered last spring.

Smotherman Start StreaK endS

Two members of the football team, quarterback Jared Funk and receiver Turner Wimberly, are enrolled in graduate courses at Vanderbilt's Peabody College. Both Funk and Wimberly are working toward postgraduate degrees in Leadership and Public Policy. A third Commodore player, linebacker John Stokes, has received early admission into Vanderbilt's Medical School, but will not start those classes before September 2011. Stokes is a two-time District IV Academic All-America recipient.

VU IN SEASON OPENERS Vanderbilt, playing its 121st year of football, moved to 77-40-4 all-time in season openers when it fell to Northwestern (21-23) on Sept. 4. The loss also stopped a three-game Commodore winning streak in openers. ★ In 2009, Vanderbilt topped Western Carolina 45-0. They also defeated Miami (Ohio) and Richmond in 2008 and 2007, respectively.

poSItIVe red Zone effICIenCY The Commodores are among the SEC's best in both red zone efficiency categories. Vanderbilt rank first in the SEC in red zone offense, converting on all four possessions inside the opponent's 20-yard line (2 TDs and 2 FGs). The Vanderbilt defense has limited opponents to 70% red zone conversions (7-10). Superb red zone efficiency, both offensively and defensively, served as a key to Vanderbilt's 7-6 campaign in 2008.

Active Commodore Player Participation

College football insiders say the Commodores' 2010 schedule ranks among the nation's most difficult. Ten of Vanderbilt's 12 opponents this season made postseason appearances during the 2009-10 season. Six of the 10 played in bowls on or after January 1. Vanderbilt's 12 opponents won at a 58.4 percent clip in 2009, going a combined 90-66. Remove Eastern Michigan's winless campaign, and the remaining 11 teams went 90-54 one year ago. Phil Steele's College Football Preview listed the Vanderbilt schedule No.12 toughest among 120 NCAA FBS teams. The Commodores will play four teams ranked in AP preseason Top 25 (Florida, 4th; Arkansas, 17th; LSU, 21st; and Georgia, 23rd). The Commodores are also the only SEC school this year that will face at least three opponents from BCS-member conferences: Northwestern, Big Ten; UConn, Big East; and Wake Forest, ACC.

VANDERBILT'S TOUGH SLATE

Thirteen players participate in the Leadership Council, serving as an entity that addresses team and student-athlete issues while acting as their teammates' voice in communicating with Vanderbilt coaches. Co-captains Joey Bailey, T.J. Greenstone, Chris Marve and Adam Smotherman are members of the Leadership Council. Others voted by teammates to represent various position groups include Larry Smith, QBs; Kennard Reeves, RBs; Brandon Barden, TEs/HBs; John Cole, WRS; Tim Fugger, DL; John Stokes, LBs; Sean Richardson, safeties; Casey Hayward, DBs; and David Giller, specialists.

MARVE WEARS DOSTER "KD1" PATCH Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB) became the fourth Vanderbilt player to wear the "KD1" jersey patch when the Commodores opened against Northwestern. The recognition is one of the most significant awarded by fellow Commodore players. The patch honors the memory of Kwane Doster, the only Commodore ever to receive the SEC Freshman of the Year Award. Doster was shot and killed in his hometown of Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 26, 2004. It will be displayed on the front of Stewart's No. 90 jersey. Other Commodore players who have worn the "KD1" patch: 2009 DE Broderick Stewart 2008 RB Jeff Jennings 2007 LB Jonathan Goff 2006 LB Jonathan Goff

For the first time since 2001, Vanderbilt jerseys sport player names. The uniform change was introduced in the season opener versus Northwestern. Jerseys during the Bobby Johnson tenure did not identify players.

Standouts Chris Marve and Warren norman were named to the Preseason All-Southeastern Conference team by coaches and writers. Marve, a junior LB from Memphis, and Norman, a sophmore RB/RS from Stone Mountain, Ga., were both named first team all-conference. Both earned All-SEC recognition from league coaches last year after putting together excellent seasons: Marve ranking as the SEC's No. 2 tackler; Norman walking away with SEC Freshman of the Year honors as the conference's all-purpose yardage leader. Marve, one of four captains, has been named to watchlists for the Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award and Lombardi Award. He enters his third season as a starter trying to become the first SEC player to achieve three consecutive seasons of at least 100 tackles since former Vanderbilt All-America linebacker Jamie Winborn achieved the feat in 1998-2000. Marve, who posted 121 tackles in 2009, opened this season with a 12-tackle performance against Northwestern. He ranks fifth in the SEC, averaging 9.3 tackles per game. Norman rushed for 111 yards (second highest career total) and leads Vanderbilt with 225 rushing yards and 413 all-purpose yards. In 2009, Norman produced one of the most productive freshman campaigns in SEC history one year ago. Media wishing to interview Commodore players should contact the Vanderbilt Athletic Communications staff well in advance. A selected number of players will be available on Monday immediately after Coach Caldwell ends his weekly press conference remarks in McGugin Athletic Center. Selected players also are available for interviews to reporters following practice on Wednesday or Thursday. Vanderbilt beat reporters can interview players upon request either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at the conclusion of each practice. Coach Caldwell also is available briefly to reporters at the conclusion of practice Tuesday-Thursday. Besides television production obligations, Commodore coaches and players are not made available on Fridays. Media photographers are permitted to shoot the first 30 minutes of practice.

Media Information The Commodores are without one student- athlete who was expected to be a key member of the 2010 signing class, Rajaan Bennett. Bennett, a highly sought-after running back from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., died tragically on Feb. 18, 2010. Bennett was the victim of a residential shooting that shocked the McEachern and Vanderbilt communities. On Sept. 3, the school honored Bennett by retiring his No. 5 jersey and erecting a monument at its football stadium. At a memorial service days after the death, his literature teacher read an essay entitled “Strength” written by Bennett within a week of his death. The essay closed with the following lines:

“There will never be a time that I will give up. I work hard at whatever I do for that man upstairs to smile down on me with the rays of the sun. “My drive cannot be stopped or even slowed down, because every obstacle has a way around it. “Every day I become stronger from the weights physically, the books mentally and life emotionally. There is no limit to my strength and at the end of the day, I want to be known as the strongest.”

Bennett rushed for 1,857 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior captain, helping McEachern to an undefeated regular season. A Rivals' 4-star recruit and one of Georgia’s most decorated seniors, Bennett earned the state’s AAAAA Offensive Player of the Year Award. At McEachern, Bennett was a campus leader and honors student. The son of Narjaketha Bennett and the late Charles Bennett, Rajaan is survived by a younger brother and sister.
