Instruction: Read the story below and find out why Jobelle is a good child.

JOBELLE, A GOOD CHILD

Jobelle is just new in school. She doesn’t have many friends yet. But she already knows Chared, Jenny, and Pearl. One day, they invited her to a mall to watch a concert of their favorite singer. Their plan was to skip class so they could watch the show. The singer also happened to be Jobelle’s favorite. But she declined to go.

“If you won’t come, then don’t expect anything from us,” threatened Chared. “We’ll not consider you a friend anymore,” blurted Jenny. “You’re such a killjoy,” added Pearl. “We can’t just skip our classes. One more thing, I need to go home early to take care of my mother. This morning, she wasn’t feeling well. There’s no one else at home to keep her company and she’ll only worry about me,” Jobelle explained.

“She’s old enough to look after herself, there’s no need for company,” said Pearl sarcastically. “That’s right. Besides, she already knows how to take her medicine by herself id she’s not feeling well,” continued Jenny. For a moment, Jobelle kept quiet. Then she made up her mind. She decided not to go with them. “I’m sorry but I can’t join you,” she said. “Hmmp, if that’s what you want,” chorused Chared, Jenny, and Pearl.

“I’ve thought about that too, Mother. And I just can’t leave you all alone especially now that you’re not feeling well,” said Jobelle. Aling Belen embraced her daughter tightly with love.

Jobelle went home early. She told everything to Aling Belen, her mother. “I’m proud of you, my dear child. You’re very good,” her mother said with pride. “You know how to make the right decision. I know how hard it is to be in school especially if you are new. It is hard to find good friends. Chared, Jenny, and Pearl are not good friends. They would like you to do something that is not good. I’m sure you’ll find good friends in school soon,” assured her mother.

“Sissy? And why?” his father asked. “Because I don’twant to join their group. They want me to smoke, gamble, and skip classes to play video games like them,” Pauloexplained.

“You made me proud of you, Paulo. Joining them will doyou no good. If they call you a sissy just because you don’twant to do something bad, just let them,” Mang Manuel

told his sonhappily.

“You should always stay that way, son- courageous, steadfast, and principled! Maintain your self-discipline,”advised Mang Manuel.

Paulo went back to school the next day. He had moreconfidence in himself than before. He had his father’swords in his mind.

Paulo’s classmates arrived. “We would like to thankPaulo. The gas lamp in the laboratory exploded. We allrushed out of the room. But Paulo bravely stayed and putout the fire,” they said.

“We are sorry for calling you a sissy,” said Ramon andDodi. “It’s nothing. In a way, you motivated me to controlmy temper and not to give in when you tempted me to dosomething bad,” Paulo said with a smile.

Unfortunately Tanya didn’t love him. Although theygot on well enough, she didn’t much like him, for Normanwas very boastful. One day, Tanya the princess was talkingto Norman about the new decorations the king and queenwere going to make in the castle, when suddenly Normanchanged the subject and said: “Tanya, I like you a lot. Infact, I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

The princess was shocked but instead of firm “NO“,she said: “Norman, you’re a very handsome knight, but Ilike to be honest with people. So I’m going to tell you whatI don’t like about you, which is this: firstly, you’re a showoff, because you like boasting about the clothes you wearwhen really a person’s clothes aren’t that important;secondly, you spit in the street which is disgusting, andlastly, I’m not going to marry you just because my parentstell me to: I’m going to marry a man I really love.”

Page 16: VALUES Grade 5 Module 1 (First Grading) OVERVIEW This Module will guide you to good manners relating to 3 Lesson Topics such as: Right Decisions, Self-discipline.

Norman reflected long and hard on whatthe princess had said. To begin with, he felt bad about heropinion of him, but he soon cheered up when he realizedthat all the things she mentioned were things he couldchange. It wasn’t his personality that annoyed her, but hisbehavior.

So Norman began trying not to brag about hisclothes, and started to feel happy in more modest clothing. He also learned not to spit in the street so as not to lookhorrible and coarse, and he felt better about that, too.And finally, he went to talk to the king and queen to askthem not to talk to the princess Tanya about him, and thatway she wouldn’t feel pressured into marrying him.

Page 17: VALUES Grade 5 Module 1 (First Grading) OVERVIEW This Module will guide you to good manners relating to 3 Lesson Topics such as: Right Decisions, Self-discipline.

Tanya and Norman continued spending time togetherand gradually Tanya began to notice the change in his habits.Seeing that he no longer did horrible things, she also beganto notice other details about him, and to like him.

Eventually the princess fell in love and married him. -END-
