What is reiki?

Have you ever wanted to help somebody with a simple healing method? One that takes away pain, soothes irritation, calms the mind and enlightens the soul?

Try Reiki.

Reiki is a simple and exquisite way to accept the love and wisdom of the Universe and channel its energy through your hands. You accept spiritual essence, and then pass it on. It was discovered by a man named Mikao Usui in Japan and was brought to Hawaii by Mrs. Hawayo Takata. This style of reiki is called “Western Reiki” and is easy to learn and a delight to use.

Many people have become healers and even Masters. You, too, can do it!

I teach Reiki online and have many successful students who now heal and teach on their own. Write me if you are interested in beginning Western Reikiwith me. I think you will amaze yourself.

A Pure Heart

You can learn to relax and calm yourself. Mikao Usui had his students practice these sayings:

Just for today I will not worry.Just for today I will not be angry.Just for today I will focus my awareness on what I am doing.Just for today I will practice kindness.Just for today I will be grateful.

It's also good to breathe slowly and hold the air a few moments and then release it and intend yourself to accept lovely relaxation and peace.

Mikao Usui (1865-1926)

The system of Reiki came to Doctor Usui when he was fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama.

It came suddenly and he wandered down the mountain aglow with his new experience. It is said that he cut his foot and healed it. Whatever the case, he was to visit people in cities and hold healing and teaching sessions.

In those days he would sit across the room and send Reiki to a student or patient through his palms or simply by thought.

This is known as “reiju”. As students learned more, he taught them how to float their hands along a patient and scan for “thick” or “thin” energy. It sometimes expressed as hot or cold, or tingling. These areas would need some attention.

Some people claim that Usui would not work for free because beggars were getting healed and then returning to bad habits and coming back to be fixed up. So he charged them to make them take responsibility for their life. Who really knows about this?

Chujiro Hayashi

One student from the Japanese navy brought some organization to the teachings. He graded students in three levels: beginner, journeyman and master. He may have added the Reiki Symbols. His name was Chujiro Hayashi. He ran a medical clinic and invited former patients to become healers and work in teams. You can see the military flair for organization here.

Hawayo Takata

A woman living in Hawaii was suffering from a stubborn illness so she visited Hayashi. She joined his reiki “teams” of healers. They would all hold their hands along patients. Her name was Hawayo Takata. She would later become a reiki master herself in her enthusiasm, and return to Hawaii to heal and teach. She is the originator of “Western Style” reiki.

In the old days she taught only 22 Masters. And she charged them thousands of dollars to be sure they were motivated. And she did this all in person. At her death there was some disagreement among her Masters as to who was the“Grand Master” of Western Reiki. But they wanted to keep Chujiro's reiki symbols secret, revealed only to initiated students.

Reiki Breaks Loose

People did not put up with this for long. Every reiki master was declared an equal reiki master. And soon the symbols themselves were published in popular books such as the one by Diane Stein.

New forms of reiki were invented, and the surprising thing was, many of the new systems actually worked. But learning Usui first was recommended.

So let's begin...

Working with your hands

I want you to stand or sit quietly and breathe. Breathe deeply and slowly and shake your shoulders and arms a little. That's right. Loosen up your wrists and hands. Perhaps stand with your feet well apart. Swing your arms a few times.

Now bring your hands together, palm facing palm, about six inches apart. They should be tingling gently from your shaking. Let yourself become aware of how they feel.

Raise your palms to hover gently near your closed eyes. Can you feel the warmth?

Page 8: Usui Western Style Reiki

When hands are tingling and feeling sensations they are “awake” and can move energy out of your body. Like a soothing flow.

So try that now. Hold your palms toward a house-plant or something. Let yourself imagine a force pushing out of your hands. Intend it to carry a gentlehealing quality.

Now try holding your hands over a different plant. Imagine your hands drinking in feelings. Let them “read” the plant's condition. Is this leaf happy? Is that flower exuberant? Do you feel warm or cold? Tingling?

Slowly let your hands drift along. Are there “sticky” or “heavy” places whereyour hands move reluctantly? Are there crazy vibrant places where too muchseems to be happening?

This is called scanning.

Drinking in the Universe

I want you to kneel if you can, and touch your palms to the floor and relax and imagine some tension flowing down your arms away from you into the earth. Let yourself become peaceful and relaxed.

Now stand up and raise your palms to the ceiling and imagine happy light falling down from the sky into your hands, and your head. Like being in the shower. Breathe deeply and enjoy this and smile. Let the energy run all through you, and out the soles of your feet.

You are peaceful and centered and ready for reiki. The healing energy will come from the Universe, and it will come with love and wisdom. All you need to do is to “intend” it to do something. Such as “I intend this reiki energy to relax and soothe” or “I intend this to heal Joe's ankle”.

Some people put their hands together as in prayer when they say an intention, and most say it silently in their thoughts.

A typical reiki healing session

You would have a patient sit in a chair or lay on a table, perhaps with a sleep mask over the eyes.

You would breathe to calm yourself and drink in energy from the Universe and give your hands a little shake. Some people say “reiki on” to their hands.

You would have explained about healing energy and that you would be moving your hands near the patient. It is better not to touch people.

It can be pleasant to play soothing music or have flowers in the room. I would not use smoky incense.

Scanning:

With one hand near the top of the patient's head, allow your other hand to float over his/her brow. Not too close. Sense the energy there.

Now drift down to the throat area. Then the heart. Then the stomach. Then the hips and legs. Just notice if there are sticky places or cold places.

Balancing:

Intend your reiki to bring health and whatever is good for your patient. Move both hands slowly along the patient. Hold longer over problem areas. You cancup both sides of a knee or a head or a foot. If you have another healer you can interweave your palms – this is known as a “reiki ladder”.

Now gently make a pushing-away motion. This says to yourself, “okay, let the energy connection stop. Hands, release the patient.”

Tell your patient he/she may get up now, and that is all there is to it.

Hand Positions from the old days:

Like I said, it is probably better not to touch a patient these days. But this chart will show how Chujiro did it back in Japan. Each position would get about two minutes of reiki. You may not touch people the way the chart shows in some positions, at least not without warning them. Bottom of the foot is an important meeting place of energy channels so it heals much. Also the ears work this way.

The Reiki Symbols

It became a sort of trend to draw these symbols with your fingers or the palm of your hand in the air before a reiki session. Or during it. And each symbol was carefully put into a new student during initiation.

(pronounced) Chokuray sayheykee honshazeshownen dye komeeo

chokurei

means “put the power here” ... used to awaken body areas, to heal physical things such as torn muscles, to remove physical pain

seiheiki

means “soothe feelings” ... used to soothe sadness, anger and confusion, to heal emotional traumas that won't let go, to bring a feminine vibration

hon sha ze sho nen

means “no distance between us” ... used in healing across long distances, or across time, or to send reiki to celestial places or ancestors

daikomyo

means “big brightness” or “the teacher serves the student” ... used to give initiations (known as attunements) and to add power and authority over mischievous forces

Initiating a New Student

This is actually quite easy. You prepare as for a healing and can even do a quick scan and balancing just to start with a relaxed and clean student.

Now you open the student's head by putting your hands together above that area and opening them as if opening a book. Your intention is to gently and with respect open the protective energy fields.

Now draw dai ko myo in the air and imagine it hanging there, and place it into the student. Do the same with cho ku rei and sei hei ki and hon sha ze shonen, but in the heart area. Also do cho ku rei on the student's palms.

Gently smooth everything and now make a book-closing gesture over the head and your student is done.

Bow to your student, for the teacher holds up the pupil, remember? If you move students by grades, there is 1st degree - 2nd degree – Master degree.

A Master knows how to teach and attune, a 2nd degree knows the symbols, a 1st degree knows the hand workings.

Healing Across A Distance

It is quite possible to send healing reiki and even reiki attunement energy over a long distance. Even across continents.

What you need is some kind of contact with a person – an email, a photo, a mutual friend. And the honshazeshonen symbol.

You can simply draw hon sha ze sho nen and place the patient's name on a slip of paper between your hands and wish the healing to go to him/her.

You can temporarily say something like “this teddy bear represents my patient and what I do to the bear I do to my patient” - and put the bear through a regular healing session.

You can imagine flower blossoms scooped up in your hands and flung into the sky to blow to distant people. You can put a reiki attunement into a glass “ball” you imagine and tell it to go to your student far away and wait until he/she is ready to accept the energy.

Protecting Your Inner Calm

Okay, living in a city with people rushing here and there, bumping other shoppers in a mall, obeying a cranky boss, spilling your coffee...

...it can be unsettling. Even on your reiki energy.

So here are some suggestions to keep calm:-get good sleep-get some exercise each day, preferably outdoors-get good food -imagine a soothing fall of light from the ceiling, and imagine releasing tension into the ground-imagine a circle or bubble of happy white light glowing around you-forgive and release people from your thoughts

Graduation Time

So, you are a successful reiki master and your students have passed their courses and now what?

Well, a certificate is nice.

And a reiki lineage. What's that? It is simply the list of names of the teachers who passed along the energy down from Mikao Usui. Records were kept, youknow. It also proves a student actually was attuned by you, and did not just claim to be.

So keep track of all the lineages of the reiki systems you learn. When you pass them on, your new students will need these.

If you are a student of mine, I will give you a certificate and a manual and a lineage. And you may join our healer fellowship if you like. We are pledged to use our reiki for good. Thank you for reading this manual. Best of luck in your studies!
