Use complete sentences!

Isle Royale is located in Lake Superior. Isle Royale is home to populations of wolves and moose. The interactions between the wolves and moose, as well as the individual population sizes, have been studied since 1958. The graph shows the population sizes over time for both wolves and moose.

1. Describe one limiting factor for the moose population.2. Explain one likely reason why the wolf population rapidly increased

between 1975 and 1980.3. Predict what will happen to the moose population’s size after 1994 by

describing the shape of the curve. In your answer, be sure to explain the reasoning behind your prediction.

Answer

1. Possible limiting factors could be: predation, habitat destruction, shelter/natural disturbances/water supply. Include an explanation of the limiting factor in your answer

2. The wolf population rapidly increased between 1975 and 1980 because there was an ample food supply. From 1970-1975, the moose population was at a high level. Because wolves prey on moose, there was an ample food supply to support a larger wolf population.

3. Possible answers: moose population will drop and level off around 1400-1200. Because they live on an island there are a limited amount of resources available. OR The moose population will drop below 1,000 if the wolf population increases. The increase in the wolf population would be due to the increased availability of moose, which would result in a decline in the moose population.

Use the information provided to answer the questions below.

Use complete sentences!

1. Describe the general composition of a protein molecule.

2. Describe how the structures of proteins differ from the structures of carbohydrates.

3. Describe how the functions of proteins differ from the functions of carbohydrates.

Answer1. Proteins are composed of amino acid molecules linked

together by peptide bonds. C, H, N, S, and O are typical atoms that compose amino acids.

2. The amino acids contain amino and carboxyl groups. Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures of a protein molecule are necessary for the protein to function correctly. Interactions occur between amino and carboxyl groups of amino acids. Carbohydrates are composed of C, H, and O. Monosaccharides are the building blocks of carbohydrates. Two monosaccharides form a disaccharide. Many monosaccharides form a polysaccharide, such as starch, cellulose, or chitin.

3. Proteins function as enzymes, antibodies, and structural components. Carbohydrates function in short-term energy storage (starch, glycogen) or structural components (chitin, cellulose, glycogen)
