PRODUCT OVERVIEW Top Panel

1. LED Display: Displays values and word fragments to indicate the keyboard status

or function value.

2. Rotary Encoders: Eight fully assignable endless rotary encoders.

3. Transport/MMC Buttons: MIDI machine control (MMC) buttons for playback control of a sequencer.

4. Keyboard: Velocity and pressure sensitive piano keys. The number of keys depends on the keyboard model.

5. Trigger Pads: Eight fully assignable velocity and pressure sensitive pads with RGB backlighting.

6. Function Buttons: Buttons to activate the PROG, CHAN, CTRL ASSIGN, X'POSE, OCTAVE, and EDIT functions.

10. DC5V: Optional DC power input for connecting an AC power adapter (not

included). The connector has a 5.5mm barrel diameter and a 2.1mm diameter center positive pin.

11. USB: USB Type-B jack for connecting a computer using the included USB cable. The keyboard draws all the power it needs from the USB bus.

12. PEDAL A: 1/4" jack for connecting a pedal (not included). By default, PEDAL A is the sustain pedal.

13. PEDAL B: 1/4" jack for connecting a pedal (not included). By default, PEDAL B is the expression pedal.

14. MIDI OUT: 5-pin MIDI connector for connecting an external MIDI device using a MIDI cable (not included).

POWER SUPPLY Although a DC Power Socket is included on the keyboard, the keyboard normally draws its power from the USB port and therefore an AC power adapter is not included. If you wish to use an AC power adapter, you will need to purchase an adapter with the following characteristics:

• 5 VDC, 500mA output

• Center positive

• 5.5mm barrel diameter

• 2.1mm pin diameter

SOFTWARE SETUP When connected to your computer with a USB cable, the keyboard will appear to your software as a simple MIDI device with one input port and one output port. You should select the keyboard input port as the MIDI input device in your software. Once this is set, your software will be able to receive notes and controller data from the keyboard.

The port names are defined as USB Audio Device when connected to the USB port. The keyboard will appear as a single USB Composite Device in Device Manager.

BASIC MIDI CONTROL As a MIDI controller, the keyboard does not actually produce sound on its own when played. Instead, it sends MIDI notes and data to a connected external MIDI synthesizer or sound software on a connected computer. This section details various ways of controlling, shaping, and adjusting the notes and data that are sent when you play.

Keyboard Velocity Curve

Whenever you press a key, the note is sent with a velocity value between 0 and maximum. This specifies how hard you press the key. Since different people have different playing styles, the keyboard offers six different velocity curves, as shown in the image above. You should experiment with the different curves to see which one best matches your style. The default curve is the first curve shown above. Perform the following steps to change the velocity curve.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter the Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key on the keyboard labeled VEL CURVE. The LED Display will show a number indicating the currently selected velocity curve. The default curve is 1.

3. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The value range is 01 ~ 06.

4. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the selected velocity curve.

Octave The Octave function allows you to adjust the pitch of the notes being played up or down by one or more whole octaves. This is especially useful for the models with fewer than 88 keys to allow access to the full range of notes. Perform the following steps to adjust the octave setting.

1. Press the OCTAVE button in the section on the left. The LED Display will show a number corresponding the currently selected octave setting. The default octave setting is 0.

2. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The value range is -4 ~ +5 (note that the + is not displayed).

3. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the selected octave setting.

Transpose The Transpose function allows you to adjust the pitch of the notes being played up or down by one or more semitones. Perform the following steps to adjust the current transposition.

1. Press the X'POSE button in the section on the left. The LED Display will show a number corresponding to the currently selected transpose setting. The default transpose setting is 00.

2. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The value range is -12 ~ +12 (note that the + is not displayed).

3. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the selected transpose setting.

MIDI Channel The MIDI interface supports 16 channels of MIDI data, each of which can be routed to a different device or instrument. The MIDI Channel function allows you to change the channel that the keyboard will use to send its notes and data. Perform the following steps to change the selected channel.

1. Press the CHAN button in the section on the left. The LED Display will show a number corresponding to the currently selected MIDI channel. The default MIDI channel is 01.

2. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The value range is 01 ~ 16.

3. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the selected MIDI channel.

Program Change The Program or Voice is the type of sound that is produced when a note is played. The sounds vary from standard instruments, such as an acoustic grand piano or electric guitar, to sound effects, such as a telephone ring or gun shot. Each MIDI channel can be independently assigned a different Program/Voice.

The General MIDI (GM) standard specifies 128 different instruments and sound effects that can be produced by all GM compatible MIDI devices. A list of all the instruments and their program numbers can be found in the table in the General MIDI Instruments section.

Perform the following steps to change the Program/Voice of the currently selected MIDI channel.

1. Press the PROG button in the section on the left. The LED Display shows a number corresponding to the currently selected program/voice.

2. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The value range is 0 ~ 127.

3. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the selected program/voice. The LED Display will show d0nE, indicating that the change was successful.

Bank LSB and MSB The original MIDI specification called for 128 different standard programs/voices. However, since that time the specification has been expanded to allow a myriad of additional sounds that can be produced by specialized MIDI devices. To accommodate these additional sounds, a 14-bit sound bank address is used.

This 14-bit address is divided into two 7-bit sound banks, which are referred to as LSB (Least Significant Bit) and MSB (Most Significant Bit) banks. Each of these banks contain 128 entries/values, which combine to produce a total 16,384 total sets of 128 individually addressable programs/voices.

By default, the keyboard's program change function addresses bank 0 (LSB=0, MSB=0). Programs on non-standard MIDI modules can be accessed by changing the sound bank to that used by the module (refer to the module's user's manual for the specific sound bank).

Perform the following steps to change the sound bank.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled BANK L to edit the LSB value or the BANK M key to edit the MSB value. The LED Display will show a number corresponding to the current LSB or MSB value.

3. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value. The range of values is 0 ~ 127.

4. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the displayed value. The LED Display will show d0nE, indicating that the value was saved.

CONTROL ASSIGN There are 135 different MIDI controller messages, with 0-127 being standard MIDI control parameters and 128-134 being special control parameters. These parameters include controls such as volume, pan, expression, reverb, chorus, etc. Each of the physical controls on the keyboard can be configured to send any of the standard 128 MIDI controller messages. A full list of these controls can be found in the MIDI Controllers section.

The eight rotary knobs, eight pressure pads, two touch strips, and two pedals (which must be plugged in) can be assigned to any MIDI controller. Perform the following steps to assign a MIDI controller to a physical control.

1. Press the CTRL ASSIGN button in the section on the left. The LED Display will show CHO.

2. Move the physical controller you want to assign. For example, if you want to assign a MIDI controller to the first rotary knob (R1), rotate the knob. The LED Display shows a value corresponding to the MIDI controller that is currently assigned to the physical control.

3. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value.

4. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the displayed value. The LED Display will show d0nE, indicating that the value was saved.

ADVANCED CONTROLS Dual Mode When Dual Mode is activated, a second program/voice can be assigned to the keyboard, which will then playback with two programs/voices. Perform the following steps to enable Dual Mode.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled DUAL. The LED Display will show ON, indicating that Dual Mode is active.

Perform the following steps to disable Dual Mode.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled DUAL. The LED Display will show OFF, indicating that Dual Mode is disabled.

Split Mode Split Mode allows you to split the keyboard into two sections, each of which can have its own program/voice and MIDI channel. Perform the following steps to enable Split Mode.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled SPLIT to enable Split Mode. The LED Display will show ON to indicate that Split Mode is enabled.

By default, the Split Point is the middle C key (MIDI control 60). Once Split Mode is enabled, perform the following steps to change the Split Point.

1. Press the EDIT button, then press the key labeled SPLIT to start the Split Point assignment function. The LED Display will show the current Split Point value.

2. Press the key you want to be the new Split Point.

3. Press the EDIT button, then press the key labeled SPLIT to end the Split Point assignment function.

Perform the following steps to disable Split Mode.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled SPLIT twice to disable Split Mode. The LED Display will show OFF to indicate that Split Mode is disabled.

Mute There may be times when you don't want to inadvertently send a MIDI message. To prevent accidental key activation from sending a MIDI message, you can Mute the keyboard by performing the following steps.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled MUTE. The LED Display will show ON to indicate that Mute is activated. Pressing keys on the keyboard will not send MIDI messages while Mute is active.

With Mute enabled, perform the following steps to disable Mute, so that the keyboard can send MIDI messages once again.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled MUTE. The LED Display will show OFF to indicate that Mute mode is disabled.

GM Mode When GM Mode is enabled, the keyboard can send Program Change messages to select a voice on a standard General MIDI device. Perform the following steps to enable GM messages.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled GM ON to send the GM ON message (F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7). The LED Display will show d0nE to indicate that the message was sent.

GS Mode When GS Mode is enabled, the keyboard can send Program Change messages to select a voice on a Roland® GS compatible device. Perform the following steps to enable GS messages.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled GS ON to send the GS ON message (F0 41 10 42 12 40 00 7F 00 41 F7). The LED Display will show d0nE to indicate that the message was sent.

XG Mode When XG Mode is enabled, the keyboard can send Program Change messages to select a voice on a Yamaha® XG compatible device. Perform the following steps to enable XG messages.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled XG ON to send the XG ON message (F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7E 00 F7). The LED Display will show d0nE to indicate that the message was sent.

Snap Shot Sometimes your software can get out of sync with the settings on the keyboard. For example, a rotary knob may physically be at the 12 o'clock, but the software thinks it is at 6 o'clock. The Snap Shot function can fix this by sending a MIDI message with the current state of all physical controls. Perform the following steps to send a Snap Shot.

1. Press the EDIT key in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled SNAP to send a Snap Shot of all physical controls to your software.

Pedal Polarity By default, the pedals are set to send a Pedal On message when the pedal is depressed and a Pedal Off message when it is let up. You can change this by performing the following steps.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled C.PEDAL.POL. The LED Display will show ON, indicating that the pedal polarity is changed.

Perform the following steps to change the pedal polarity back to normal.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled C.PEDAL.POL. The LED Display will show OFF, indicating that the pedal polarity is changed back to default.

An alternative method of changing pedal polarity is to press and hold the pedal down while turning the keyboard on. The keyboard will detect the alternate state and will swap the Pedal On and Pedal Off messages.

Shift Button Groups The eight rotary knobs and eight pressure pads can actually be assigned 16 different functions, by shifting the assignment bank. Perform the following steps to activate the Shift function to switch the assignment banks.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled 1-8/9-16 in blue (SHIFT function).

Reset Perform the following steps to reset all controls and settings to their factory default settings.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled RESET. All controls and settings will be reset to the factory default settings and the system initial settings data is broadcast.

PRESSURE PADS The eight pressure pads at the top of the keyboard provide a unique form of control. Each pad can be assigned a specific MIDI controller and, as you apply more and more pressure to the pad, the value of the controller increases, then decreases back to 0 upon release. In addition to assigning MIDI controllers to the Pads, you can also change the behavior and appearance of each Pad.

Pad Velocity Curve

Each Pad is pressure sensitive in the same way that the regular piano keys are pressure sensitive. You can select one of six different velocity curves for the pressure pads by performing the following steps.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the key labeled PAD CURVE. The LED Display will show a number corresponding to the currently selected Pad Curve.

3. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed value.

4. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the displayed value. The LED Display will show the new Pad Curve value.

Pads Note Setting Perform the following steps to change the MIDI note that is sent when the Pad is pressed.

1. Press the Pad you wish to change.

2. Rotate the Value Dial/Enter Button to change the displayed note value.

3. Press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the new MIDI note value for the selected Pad.

RGB Backlighting Each individual Pad can be set to have a different color of RGB backlighting. Perform the following steps to change the backlighting color for one of the Pads.

1. Press the EDIT button in the section on the left to enter Keyboard Multifunction Mode.

2. Press the Pad you want to change.

3. The first three rotary knobs are used to change the Red, Green, and Blue values respectively. Rotate the three knobs to change the amount of Red, Green, and Blue color for the backlighting. As each knob is rotated, the LED Display shows the current brightness of the color element, from 0 (none) to 127 (full brightness).

4. Once the desired color values are set, press the Value Dial/Enter Button to save the new color settings.
