    FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT B READINGS: Isaiah 63:16-17; 64:1, 3-8; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

    GOSPEL: Mark 13:33-37

    Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

Advent bursts violet and beautiful like the jacaranda tree on the very brink of an Australian summer. It is a tree of contradictions like this southern season of the Church’s year: green-leafed in winter, autumn and spring, blossoming from bare trunk to welcome in November. A myriad trumpets cluster for short fanfares before it lays a purple carpet to greet its king who is not yet—but coming. Verna Holyhead sgs

After greeting the Christians with customary expressions from Greek

society (grace to you) and Hebrew tradition (peace), Paul offers a brief

prayer of thanksgiving and then moves to the theological point of the

passage, namely, the community's anticipation of the revelation of the

Lord Jesus Christ. The Corinthian Christians were living in the ‘time

between’. Christ had died and risen from the dead. However, they lived

in anticipation of his return. At issue was the manner of their lifestyle

and the character of their commitment in the ‘time between’. Paul

reminds them that all of their talents and the gifts that they had from

God were meant to aid them in living faithfully until the Lord's coming.

A thrice-repeated command, ‘Watch!’ surrounds a parable that emphasises the

need to be ready at all times, because Christians do not know when the Lord will

return. The Greek word for ‘time’ (kairos) refers to a special time, more than mere

chronological or sequential time (chronos). Kairos is uncommon time and uncommon

events occur within it. Waiting for the Lord’s return is like the situation of servants

who remain behind when the householder goes abroad. Each servant is given a

certain authority within the household. The gatekeeper is singled out and told to be

on the watch. The parable highlights the uncertainty surrounding the householder’s

return and the vigilance required of the servants as they wait.

    APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

    Amen.

A Thanksgiving Prayer in Time of Pandemic

On this Thanksgiving Day like no other, even now, O God, your name is worthy to be praised.

For in your mercy and kindness no thought of ours is left unguarded, no tear unheeded, and no joy unnoticed. For the blessings we have known and for those we have yet to recognize, to you we give our grateful thanks. For life that reminds us how fragile we are and also how strong we can be: We thank you, O God. For sheltering that urges us to rediscover what truly matters: We thank you, O God. For communication that allows us to connect in ways new and old: We thank you, O God. And for mindfulness that shows us how much we rely on one another: We thank you, O God.

Watch over your family, Lord, gathered here and at tables separated by miles, and bless those who work tirelessly to keep us all safe. Though we may be kept apart on this day that calls us together, we know your Spirit draws us close.

Lord, we ask you to ease the pain of empty chairs that bring to mind our beloved dead. Let our grieving find its rest in your Son, Jesus, in whose Resurrection is our hope.

Grant your Spirit to be present here that this meal may become a foretaste of your heavenly table where every tear shall be wiped away, every hunger fed, and no distance can separate us from your love in Christ, from whom all good things come. Amen. © Diana Macalintal @Liturgy.Life
