The way you think is not God’s way.’ This scene marks a turning point in the Gospel of Mark. When Peter speaks up and identifies Jesus as ‘the Christ’, it is the first time that any person has correctly known who Jesus is. The Jews at this time were waiting for a saviour they called the Messiah, which in Greek is the Christ. Peter recognises that Jesus is this saviour but he is not aware yet how Jesus will be a saviour. Peter’s idea is probably for a political figure like King David who could free the people from the power of the Roman Empire. This is not Jesus’ vision of his role! Even by this stage in his ministry, Jesus has met significant opposition to his teaching and his behaviour towards the sick, Gentiles and sinners. His teaching challenges the authority of the religious leaders of his time and he must know that if he goes to Jerusalem, which is the centre of their power and religious authority, he will be in trouble. So when Jesus speaks about his future suffering and death, it is not a case of having special power to see into the future it is just common sense! Jesus’ teaching on what awaits him in Jerusalem is not understood by his disciples and Peter opposes him. Peter prefers a saviour who will be a glorious heroic figure, and of course, the disciples would then be famous and important friends of this saviour. But Jesus’ ways are not the ways of Peter. Jesus puts Peter in his place as a disciple. ‘Get behind me!’ Peter is a follower; his place is behind Jesus, not in front as a leader. He is named ‘Satan’ – the Tempter. This is worth considering. Any person facing torture and death could well be tempted to avoid this path. In his humanity, Jesus must have wrestled with this question. Should he go to Jerusalem or remain in Galilee? In Galilee, he is well received and he is away from the authority of the High Priest and the Temple. Would it be better to stay in Galilee and spend more years in preaching and healing? Perhaps in time the Jerusalem authorities might even come around to accepting him? Remember the reading from Philippians during last week that spoke of Jesus becoming one with us in taking on our humanity. Jesus needed to think through his own vocation and what might God be wanting. Peter voices an alternative vision and even though this might be attractive, Jesus is focused on God’s vision. I feel for Peter in this scene confused, not liking Jesus’ words, and having his own idea of Jesus’ future. Sometimes I try to tell God what I want done, and how it would be best for God to act. Then, like Peter, I have to learn that my role is disciple, not leader. Peter has to learn, as I have to learn, that the disciple needs to listen attentively and remain always as follower even when the path is difficult and seems crazy by our standards. I pray that I can continue to listen and learn to be follower, even in those times when the way is confusing. Adapted © Liturgyhelp: Dr Mary Coloe pbvm Our Church, our community. Doing good. ‘‘Get behind me Satan. The way you think is not God’s way.’

This scene marks a turning point in the Gospel of Mark. When Peter speaks up and identifies Jesus as ‘the Christ’, it is the first time that any person has correctly known who Jesus is. The Jews at this time were waiting for a saviour they called the Messiah, which in Greek is the Christ. Sacramental Journey: CICCA

[Christian Initiation of Children of Catechetical Age]

Parents of all children 7 years and older are invited to regis-

ter them for the Sacrament program at any time of the year.

There are four steps: 1. Register, 2. Participation in Liturgy,

3. Invitation, and 4. Enrolment/Prepare/Celebrate.

Step 1: Contact the parish office on 3849 7158 and register your child who will receive a Mass card.

Step 2: Come along with your child to any of the weekend parish Masses to en-able your child to learn the ropes, feel confident in the church, participate in

the liturgy as he/she is ready and begins to feel at home.

Step 3: As Fr Pat gets to know you and your child he will write and invite you to take the next step.

Step 4: Children are enrolled in the Sacrament Program and will attend family centred activity sessions to prepare for the celebration of Confirmation and

First Communion.

Registration to reception of the Sacraments is based on a child’s readiness. It is tailored individually for families and children.

If children are not yet Baptised for any reason, please contact the parish office to speak to us. Both Fr Pat and I are happy to talk to you about the process and assist you in any way.

May God’s Spirit guide and direct us on this journey.

♫ PROCESSIONAL: LORD I BELIEVE Ref: Lord, I believe and trust in you; In you the world’s true light.

Though long the struggle and dark the night along the way of faith and love. By your grace, Lord, I believe; Help, then my unbelief.

1. From age to age, across the years, the life of faith keeps on; The Spirit moves each heart and mind the truth to search, the truth to find, the truth that sets us free, the light that shines and lights our way. (Refrain)

2. For faith, the rock on which we stand, seeks out your guiding hand. What ever darkness comes at night, faith has the eyes to see the light, and ears to hear your voice, and moves with joy to Christ’s embrace. (Refrain)

1. I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal for he turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. R/

2. They surrounded me, the snares of death, with anguish of the tomb; they caught me, sorrow and distress. I called on the Lord’s name. O Lord my God, deliver me! R/

3. How gracious is the Lord, and just; our God has compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearts; I was helpless so he saved me! R/

4. He has kept my soul from death, my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. R/

GOSPEL: Mark 8:27-35 ♫ COMMUNION: BREAD OF LIFE Refrain: Bread of life, hope of the world, Jesus Christ, our brother;

feed us now, give us life, lead us to one another.

2. The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: just as now it is gathered, make your people one. (Refrain)

3. We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love. (Refrain)

4. Hold us in unity, in love for all to see; that the world may believe in you, God of all who live. (Refrain)

5. You are the bread of peace, you are the wine of joy, broken now for your people, poured in endless love. (Refrain)

♫ SONG OF PRAISE: WILL YOU LOVE ME? 1. Will you give me your life forever? Will you carry my cross ev’ry

day? Will you walk in the light of my presence? Will you follow the truth of my ways.

Chorus: Will you love me as I have loved you? Will you live with me the darkness as I die? For the moon and the stars will be gone like the night, and the sun will be shining on you.

2. Like the purest of gold in the furnace, is your love strong enough to endure? Does your faith carry on through the shadows? Does it shine in the night for the world? (Chorus)

3. Can you walk in the footprints of silence, through the wilderness sands in the sun, from the desert of doubt and temptation, to the glorious mountain of fire? (Chorus)

♫ RECESSIONAL: THE SUMMONS

1. Will you come and follow me if I but call your

name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be

shown, will you let my name be known, Will

you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

2. Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your

name? Will you care for cruel and kind and

never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you

let me answer pray’r in you and you in me?

5. Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and

never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll

move and live and grow in you and you in me. T & M: Bell, John & Maule, Graham © 1987 Willow Pub
