Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
‘Shake the dust from your feet.’
‘Shake the dust from your feet.’ Sounds simple but there are counsellors and therapists who can testify that this is one of the hardest things we sometimes have to do. What is the alternative for these trainee disciples?
They could reflect and see what they could have done better; they could go back and try again. But sometimes you’ve done your best. Sometimes people just do not want what you think they ought to have.
These disciples could walk away feeling a failure. ‘It’s all my fault. James would have got through to them. I’m not really a good disciple.’ Again, sometimes there’s no ‘fault’ or ‘blame’ when things go wrong, it just happens.
These disciples could walk on to the next village really angry, going over in their minds or in their conversation, how awful the villagers were – in other words, they have not really left the village, they are still carrying it with them. By the time they arrive at the next village they will be exhausted, or worse, superimpose the village they just left on this new one.
Jesus’ advice is perfect. ‘Shake the dust from your feet.’ Leave this village behind you. Don’t carry it with you in your guilt, or sense of failure, or anger. Let it go.
The whole focus of Jesus’ instructions to his disciples having their first practice is to ‘travel lightly’ – don’t burden yourself with excess baggage either physical or emotional. No haversacks, no bread, and no unwelcoming dust! Good advice for disciples of all time.
The reading from Ephesians is one of the beautiful early Christological hymns that situate the meaning of the Christ event within a rich cosmological setting. This hymn, as in other places in the New Testament, doesn’t present the incarnation as an ‘interruption’ to creation but as part of a process, that God had always had in mind from the beginning of time. In Christ, the whole cosmos was claimed as God’s own.
For each of us celebrating at Mass this weekend: What does this gospel say about missionary activity? What aspects of the gospel are challenging for your own life / lifestyle? What sign is intended when Jesus tells the disciples to shake off the dust from an unwelcoming town? What is the importance of ‘going out in pairs’ when undertaking mission and ministry? With what ministry of the Church could you become more involved?
“The faithful who are ill, are deprived of their rightful and accustomed place in the Eucharistic community. … For the sick, the reception of Communion is a sign of support and concern shown by the Christian community for its members who are ill.” Pastoral Care of the Sick #73
Let’s keep our eyes open to the needs in our community. WHO’S MISSING? How do we keep in contact. If you are ill, undergoing surgery or need to move into care, please let the parish office know so that we can maintain contact with you.

Please sign the Communion register in the sacristy of the Church from which you take the Blessed Sacrament to the Sick. It is important that the Blessed Sacrament is taken to the sick, as soon as possible, after Mass or after you have taken it from the Tabernacle. It is not appropriate to be involved in other activities while you have the Blessed Sacrament in your care.
PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM Today we will hear from members of our Parish Finance Council regarding the financial stewardship of
our parish. The Finance Council works with Fr Pat to ensure our parish has the necessary resources
to carry out its mission, relying on the financial support of the parishioners. As we listen today, may
we be helped to focus on how we can make a commitment to our parish effort of sharing the gospel message
with all in our community, by ensuring the material resources necessary for this are provided.
We are indebted to all who have contributed to our Planned Giving over the decades.
Invariably though, each year we do lose some valued contributors. So a warm invitation is
extended to parishioners who have not had the opportunity to be involved, and with existing
contributors, help maintain the effectiveness of our program and cover that natural attrition.
During the past year some planned expenses were deferred. Also we have benefited in 2017 from increased
disbursements from Centacare for our Outside School Hours Care facilities, which with increased expenses
may not attain the same net level this year. Funds transferred from our Columbarium Trust Account in 2017
were an accumulation for a number of years and going forward transfers will only be for annual uptake of
spaces.
Please make our pastoral effort fruitful through a loving, infectious faith. Let us all work towards a financially
vibrant and viable future for our three communities by participating in our Planned Giving Program.
