VISION

VISION

U-T TV is the live television platform of the

U-T San Diego integrated media organization, which will leverage the content

of its more than 160 news providers. Presented by locally recognized on-air

personalities, daily lead stories of U-T TV will be woven and delivered unlike any

programming currently seen on television.

Broadcast live from the U-T’s new television studio in Mission Valley, the U-T TV brand

of hyper-local content will be seen by cable and satellite television subscribers.

Streaming online at utsandiego.com, U-T TV will be accessible to web surfers and

mobile devices. By securing key sponsors, U-T TV will offer viewers fewer commercials

than on local TV stations because programming will be "powered by" U-T partners.

Rich social media, email correspondence and print marketing campaigns will be

employed to virally grow the U-T TV fan base.

Combining the strength of the U-T’s print and digital platforms, U-T TV — San Diego’s

channel of authority — will reach over 1.4 million San Diegans every week.

PROGRAMMING

U-T TV will air live daily, Monday through Friday, to provide the

freshest daily news, sports and feature stories, and will broadcast "best of" features

on weekends. Its broadcast schedule will be anchored by two shows hosted by

recognizable on-air personalities Scott Kaplan, Billy Ray Smith, and Roger Hedgecock.

U-T San Diego has hired veteran news producer J.R. Mahon as director of

Programming and News. An award-winning journalist and a gifted communicator,

Mahon joins U-T San Diego from KGTV 10News where he was executive producer.

Mahon brings a track record of delivering number-one rated stations and shows in

each market he has served.

• J.R. Mahon has spent 25 years in television news and new media working for Time Warner, Gannett Television, McGraw-Hill, The E.W. Scripps Company, as well as for multiple creative agencies. His television production experience includes YNN New York, KARE 11 Minneapolis, WKYC Cleveland, and KGTV San Diego.

The Morning Show with Scott & BR U-T TV will launch each programming day with The Morning Show with Scott & BR

from 6-11 a.m. This morning program will focus on everything that is San Diego,

including reports from U-T content providers and guests. The show will also do live

broadcasts from scenic San Diego locales like Del Mar and Petco Park, as well as from

local restaurants and events, and at local military bases such as Camp Pendelton.

The Morning Show will build on the experience of Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith,

who have hosted the leading sports radio program in San Diego for nearly a decade.

Joining the on-air team will be San Diego native Amber Mesker, a local broadcast

journalist, to round out the comprehensive news programming of this show.

The Best of the Morning Show will air on weekends, and blogs and columns from the

hosts will publish online at utsandiego.com and in print in the U-T daily newspaper.

• Billy Ray Smith, Jr. began his broadcast career in 1992 as a KGTV 10News sports anchor. A former NFL star for the San Diego Chargers, Smith is an analyst and game-day host for Chargers TV. He also provides expert football analysis for Fox Sports.

• Amber Mesker is an experienced marketing manager for a local telecommunications company, and a respected on-air talent, having hosted Comcast Central’s monthly programming, broadcast to more than six million homes.

• Scott Kaplan has provided commentary, analysis, and insider NFL coverage for Westwood One and CBS Sports for more than 10 years. In 2001 he formed the Scott & BR sports radio show on XTRA 690 and, eventually, The Mighty 1090, with Billy Ray Smith.

online at utsandiego.com.

During this election year, Hedgecock’s political reporting and expertise will be

essential viewing for any San Diegan concerned about the presidential and

mayoral races.

• Roger Hedgecock’s resume includes mayor of San Diego and service on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. He also writes a column for U-T San Diego’s Opinion page.
