SPIRIT OF CARINGThe Spirit of Caring Award honors individual volunteers, businesses and/or organizations whose values and concerns for humankind are demonstrated through their leadership, service and commitment to the people of our community.

BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION RECIPIENTSECI Building and Construction Trades CouncilThe East Central Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council (ECIBCTC) and its member unions are an integral part of the fabric of Champaign County. The labor community and United Way have worked in partnership for decades. Local labor sponsors an annual charity golf outing supporting the “Getting Ready for Kindergarten Calendar,” several food mobiles throughout the year and they were among the first to help establish area high school food pantries. ECIBCTC provides a solid foundation for social services in Champaign County.

Human Kinetics Human Kinetics has a long, rich history with United Way and this year was their best campaign ever. To date, their employees have donated over $150,000. Their United Way campaign is only a portion of what they do to help in the community. For the past 21 years, they have embraced the community service spirit by sponsoring Girl Scout troops in Shadow Wood, organizing the Twin City Twosome and working with local municipalities to be a positive force in the Bristol Park neighborhood. Human Kinetics embraces the spirit of Corporate Social Responsibility.

INDIVIDUAL RECIPIENTCurt Anderson

Curt Anderson has provided extraordinary leadership in many capacities for United Way and other organizations in Champaign County. Through his 10 year service on the UWCC Board, Curt has served in multiple volunteer roles including two years as Board Chair. His commitment to this organization is unwavering and he has been an important steward during this time of change and growth. Curt is also a dedicated volunteer for many organizations including

American Heart Association, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and others too numerous to mention. United Way and our community have both greatly benefited from Curt’s passion, knowledge and vision.

DIFFERENCE MAKERSUnited Way salutes individuals who have made an impact on our organization and in our community. They give, advocate and volunteer to make a difference and we are proud to award the following individuals the “Difference Maker” award.

PROVIDING HOPE. IMPROVING LIVES.

We at United Way have been working with you, our supporters, to advance the common good in Champaign County for nearly 90 years. The United Way is constantly evolving to assess and address the needs of our communities. Our efforts are multi-faceted and innovative. We are conveners, advocators, and collaborators.

We bring people together to achieve meaningful improvements: preparing children for kindergarten, helping individuals live healthy lives, and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to achieve financial stability. These are all building blocks for a better quality of life.

Once again we exceeded our campaign goal and converted campaign dollars into action, funding 67 programs and helping over 73,000 people. Our home here in Champaign County is filled with people with big hearts wanting to make sure that those who feel as if life is bleak, can see a bright future. Hope is here in Champaign County because of you. So, whether you give, advocate or volunteer, if you are a community partner, employer, or a program participant, thank you for being committed to LIVE UNITED and mobilizing the caring power of our communities.

We considered it an honor to serve as the 2012 Campaign Co-Chairs, working with a number of very dedicated volunteers to meet the campaign’s goal and more importantly, help to meet the needs of those 73,000 individuals in Champaign County receiving United Way funded services. As a mother and daughter team who have been long-time residents of this community, we are proud to call Champaign County our home!

United Way of Champaign County exemplifies this community we call ‘home’ by bringing neighbors and resources together to improves lives and assist those in need. We thank you for all of your past fundraising support to reach our campaign goal as well as your future support as you continue to ask your friends, co-workers, neighbors and family members to join in this effort. The work at United Way never stops.

We couldn’t think of a better organization than United Way of Champaign County to dedicate our time and resources to as Campaign Co-Chairs. Where else can you assure children the help they need to become ready to succeed in school, keep young people on a path to high school graduation, support families in gaining financial independence and provide seniors with food and access to healthcare? United Way of Champaign County – This Place We Call Home!

IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITYOur Community Investment Package totaling over $2.8 million: $1.8 million is being invested toward our newly adopted community goals along with over $1 million in donor directed funding. Following are some examples of community investments:

EDUCATION: Community Goal: Helping children and youth develop to their full potential and to be equipped to become positive, contributing members of the community. • Invested $640,532 into 20 programs • Published 7,000 copies of our free, annual Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Calendar and provided a new online Spanish version• Worked to identify gaps in school readiness by assessing kindergartners

in 5 elementary schools in Champaign and Rantoul • Initiated a collaboration with the 4 largest mentoring organizations to

identify ways to better serve the youth in our community• Facilitated the return of nationally acclaimed author, Wes Moore, who

spoke to 500 high school students about making good life choices

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING: Community Goal: People have the resources, knowledge and support necessary to meet their physical and mental health needs. • Invested $673,697 into 22 programs • Distributed free Family-Wize prescription savings cards resulting

in over $180,000 in prescription savings for over 2,500 Champaign County residents

• Worked in partnership with the Community Healthcare Coalition to gain local governance of Frances Nelson Health Center to address the growing healthcare needs for the medically underserved

FINANCIAL STABILITY:Community Goal: Individuals and families will be financially secure and stable in order to meet their basic needs with hope and confidence for the future. • Invested $217,725 into 11 programs • Led a community effort to address the continuing need for emergency

shelter for families which resulted in the launch of a new pilot program • Conducted 8 poverty experience simulations reaching over 400

community members illustrating what life in the poverty spectrum is like in Champaign County

• Supported the annual Money Smart Week, which provided free financial education information to over 1,800 Champaign County residents

COMMUNITY BASICS: Community Goal: Individuals and families benefit from an improved human condition. • Invested $286,599 into 14 programs • Educated over 39 new Emerging Community Leaders who are now

equipped to connect, serve and lead in Champaign County• Collected over 100,000 items during our 2012 “Stuff the Bus” kick-off that

were distributed to 26 community partners
