Challenges in theHealthcare supply chain

• Medication errors result in additional treatments, disabilities and even loss of life

• Counterfeiting is an increasing global threat

• Traceability from manufacturer to patient is unworkable

• Product recalls can be difficult to manage, in particular for healthcare providers

• A lot of manual interventions in the healthcare supply chain decrease its efficiency and accuracy

Why use GS1 Global Standards?

Based on open GS1/EPCglobal standards Identification numbers are ‘fit for purpose’ Provides interoperability essential for mass adoption. Copes with different data carrier/capture technologies Enables Healthcare providers and suppliers to ‘future proof’

processes Cost savings for all involved Enables traceability from manufacturer to healthcare provider to

patient bedside Based on best practices Access to industry user groups GS1 is community managed (membership organisation) GS1 can deliver on the ASTM – E1714-07 Standard Guide for the

Properties of a Universal Healthcare Identifier
