Summary

• The novel by Mariana Azuela “The Underdogs” is based on the Mexican Revolution. The novel shows how the revolution impacted Mexico's people. The novel is based on Emilio Zapata who rose up to Madero demanding reform. The novel also focuses in the fact that in both sides, there was in the government and in the rebel ranks, there is so much treachery, betrayal, cynicism, assassination and lack of moral leadership that the movement can hardly do anything else but fail. When the poor will win they were still poor. The Mexican people joined the Revolution for many reasons, whether it was for revenge, or to live a better life or even to escape from the law. Azuela points out that there were many rebels that went to fight in the revolution, but had no idea what they were fighting for. He demonstrated how the women were left behind to take care of there families but later became subject of abuse. There was rape the burning of houses, women and children being tortured and massacre. In conclusion it is sad to know that not much as changed since the revolution occurred. Due to Mexico's corrupt government many people are getting killed and forced to leave to the United States to feel safe of all the massacres.
