VALUED AT $98.3 BILLION

Apple is now the world’s most valuable brand. Even though our chapters aren’t billion-dollar companies, we can definitely borrow some of Apple’s methods to establish a stronger brand identity.

•  We develop our theme and use across all visual communications.

•  A common theme or view helps members or audiences feel connected. It also creates unity that makes all communications easily recognizable or relative to your chapter.

•  Committees are a great way for our members to become more involved with UF PRSSA and each member can become involved with something that interests them.

–  Networking committee is ideal for members who want to build their professional development skills through recruiting speakers to come to our general body meeting and skills seminars.

–  Communications committee allows members to improve their writing by helping to draft professional emails, newsletters and fliers.

–  Socials committee is perfect for members who want to hone in on their event planning and management skills.

•  Alpha PRoductions, our Chapter’s student-run public relations firm, gives our members the opportunity to put themselves on the fast track to a successful career in public relations.

•  By working with paying clients, Alpha Productions gives members a taste of what agency life is like, while also allowing them to put into practice what they learn in class and preparing them to be competitive for internships by gaining valuable public relations experience.

OUR MEETINGS

Page 28: UF - Chapter Branding

   @ufprssa #yourPRSSA

•  The first type of general body meeting we have is speakers. The speaker will put together a presentation with our guidance and present it to our members. It is then followed by a Q&A.

•  We have been fortunate enough to be able to bring speakers in from all around the nation. But, if your chapter is smaller, we recommend reaching out to local professionals and using tools like Skype to connect with those professionals around the nation.

•  We encourage members and speakers to use our hashtag so we can track the conversation, as you will see in the following examples.

OUR SPEAKERS

BRIAN PRICE

Page 30: UF - Chapter Branding

   @ufprssa #yourPRSSA

•  The first speaker we had was our National PRSSA president, Brian Price. He spoke to our members about PRSSA, the benefits that come from involvement and ways you can make it #yourPRSSA.

•  When looking for speakers, it’s a good idea to reach out to national PRSSA members. They are great speakers and may have connections to other speakers.

•  Second, we had Christine Pietryla, senior vice president of public relations at Walker Sands Communication in Chicago. She talked to us about the everyday life of a professional. She was able to give tips on making your career the best it can be.

•  Christine is an alumna from the University of Florida. Reaching out to alumni from your school is a great way to find professionals for your meetings. They are usually more than willing to come to speak with your chapter and excited to return to their alma mater.

OUR SPEAKERS

Page 34: UF - Chapter Branding

   @ufprssa #yourPRSSA

•  Our third speaker was Heather Allison, publicist from Country Music Television. Heater spoke to us about how to connect to the entertainment side of public relations. She talked about internship possibilities and what a company like CMT expects from interns who are involved with PRSSA.

•  As you see, Heather’s title is publicist. Although this is not a traditional public relations title, heather was able to speak to us about the many roles she plays during her day. From contacting media and landing a full story in the Billboard magazine, she uses skills from her PR degree every day.

•  You have to keep your members in mind when selecting speakers. Although some members want to do corporate or agency work, other members may be interested in jobs or opportunities that aren’t “true PR” titles.

OUR SKILL SEMINARS

•  A more personal experience for members because the professionals are coming in and teaching students one-on-one.

•  For our next skills seminar, we are bringing in Pat McSweeney, North Florida PRSA president. His topic will be pitching. He will give us a lesson on pitching, what he would do-what he would expect, etc. Then he will give us a topic to pitch about. After a few minutes of writing, Pat will edit them and give feedback.

•  Besides being the PRSA president, I interned with Pat during the summer. So he was more than willing to help us out. When you are looking for professionals remember to consider PRSSA national connections, alumni from your school, and reach out to those you have connections with from internships or jobs.

•  At the end of each year, we have a spring summit with the newly elected executive board.

•  The executive board discusses their vision for the upcoming year and decides on a theme. Most of the time, they keep a central focus on professional development. For example, this year we wanted to make our theme actionable, but still focus on our members, so we decided on “Connect to your future” and #yourPRSSA.

•  This idea will become the theme, and the whole process comes full circle.

•  So, how can you take this back to your chapter to build your brand? –  Brainstorm with your executive board. What worked this

year? What didn’t? Think of what could be improved. –  Make sure you connect all of your messages and keep a

consistent visual identity. –  Create programming and tactics around this central theme.
