EXECUTIVESUMMARY

OnOctober4th,2018,UBCOkanaganandGreenStepSolutionsInc.partneredtofacilitateawasteaudit.Fourdifferentwastestreams(garbage,recycling,returnable,andcompost)wereassessedfrom12differentbuildings/areasoncampus.The2018wasteauditwasthefifthauditthatGreenStephasfacilitatedwithUBCOsince2010andthegarbageauditremainstheprimaryfocus.TheauditwassetupatUBCOkanagan’scourtyardat8:00amandwasfacilitatedbyAndreaMackintoshandWendyWrightfromGreenStepSolutionsandDerekMahoneyfromUBCOkanagan.Tarpsweresetoutinthecourtyardwithstringsdesignatingrowsforcollectedwastetobeplacedfortheaudit.Bagsofgarbage,recycling,andreturnableswereplacedonthetarpsinfrontoftheappropriatesigns,whichidentifiedthebuildingfromwhichthebagscame.Compostwasplacedtogetheronaseparatetarpandbagswerelabeledwiththeoriginbuilding.TheGreenStepteam,membersfromUBCOkanaganstaff,andstudentvolunteersfromtheSUST100classdressedinprotectiveclothingandsortedthewasteforeighthours.Atotalof5,211litresofgarbage,3,887litresofrecycling,523litresofreturnables,and40litresofcompostwasaudited,totaling9,661litresofwasteaudited.Thegarbageauditfindingsdemonstratedthatonly19%ofthetotalsamplevolumewas‘true’garbage,meaningthat81%ofthewastehadthepotentialofbeingdivertedfromthelandfill.Therecyclingauditfound75%ofthetotalvolumetobe‘true’recycling,with25%contaminationintherecyclingstream.Thereturnableauditfound83%ofthetotalvolumetobe‘true’returnablewaste,with17%contaminationinthisstream.Thecompostauditfound100%ofthetotalvolumetobe‘true’compostablewaste,with0%contaminationinthisstream.

REDUCINGANDREUSING

• *Convertmorebathroomstohavehigh-efficiencyhanddryersinsteadofpapertowels.Targetbusiestbuildingsfirst(Library,UNC,EME).Forverybusybuildings,considerthein-sinkstyledryerstoreduceline-upsfor1or2wall-mountedhanddryers.

RECYCLING

• *Consideranadvertisingcampaignonpapercoffeecups/sleeveswherepossible(i.e.thecafeteria,orotherfoodoutletsthatyouhaveanycontrolover).Designandordercupsand/orsleevesthatprominentlysaysomethinglike“recycleme”withtherecyclingsymbol,andcoloursthatmatchyourrecyclingbins(blue).

COMPOSTING

• *Thecompostsamplethatwascollectedfortheauditwasnotcontaminated(althoughitdidcontain10%papertowelandbio-containers,whicharetechnicallynotacceptedinthecompostprogram),butalotofcompostingpotentialisbeingmissingfromtherestofcampus.Intheonedaysample,162litresoffoodwastewasfoundinotherwastestreams(mostlythegarbage,at148L)comparedtothe36Loffoodwastefoundinthecompostaudit.ToenhancewastereductionatUBCO,workoncapturingthispotential.Addcompostbinsinmoreareas;tryoneperfloor,insteadofoneperbuilding.Targetbusiestbuildingsfirst:SciencebuildingandArtsbuildinghadthemostfoodwasteinthegarbage,followedbyUNCandEME.

SIGNAGE,EDUCATION,ANDCOMMUNICATION

• *TrainanddeployaGreenPoliceteamoncampustoguidestudentsonhowtodivertwaste.ThetaskofaGreenPoliceistomonitorawastestationandguideusersonhowtodisposeoftheirwasteitemscorrectly.Theyalsocorrectmistakesduringbusyperiodstoensureproperwastediversionoccurs.TargetSeptemberwhentherearelotsofnewstudentsoncampus.Targetbinsineachbuilding(tointeractwithasmanystudentsaspossible).Ideasonwhotogetinvolved:Studentvolunteers,Environmentalsciencesorsustainabilityclasses,Environmentclub(ESS).Thiswouldmakeabigimpactonstudenteducation;it’sliveeducation,notreadingsomethingthat’seasytoignore.

• *Revisit/reviewhowsustainability(includingwastediversion)isintroducedtonewstudents,i.e.

whenregistering,duringorientation,etc.Gettingapageintotheorientationhandbookisagoodstartbutitwilllikelybeignoredormissedbymoststudents.FindabetterawaytohighlightUBCO’scommitmenttosustainabilityandmakeitfunaninteractiveifpossible.Perhapsintroducearecyclingquizorsortinggame.Orientationeventsfornewstudentsareagoodopportunityformentioningsustainabilityoncampus,includingasectionaboutwastediversion.

INFRASTRUCTURE

• *Thebiggestproblemareaoncampusisthelibrary.Whencomparedtootherbuildings,itsgarbagestreamhasthemostrecycling,mostreturnables,thirdmost‘other’items,andsecondleast‘truegarbage’.Assessandscaleupallwastediversiontacticsinthelibrary;binplacement,signage,andmessaging/communications.

RESIDENCES

• *Thetwobiggestcontaminantsinthesampleofresidencegarbagewereplasticcontainersandfoodwaste.Makeaconcertedefforttoincludeanentireresidencebuildinginthenextauditordoafull-scaleresidenceauditonanalternating(odd)year.Aimforresidenceauditinfall2019.

INTRODUCTION

OnSeptember20,2018,AndreaMackintoshfromGreenStepSolutionsmetwithstaffatUBCOincludingDerekMahoney(Manager,LandscapeandContractServices),StephanieFrench(Advisor,Sustainability),RogerBizzotto(AssociateDirector,FacilitiesManagement),Mike(BestServicePros),andBonnieandScott(PathwaysAbilitiesSociety)toplanandcoordinatethe6thbiennialUBCOwasteaudittotakeplaceinearlyOctober2018.AdateofOctober4th,2018wassettoauditoneday’sworthofwastefrom12differentbuildings/areasoncampus:

• Administration• Arts• Arts&SciencesCentre(ASC)• Creative&CriticalStudies(CCS)• Engineering,Management&Education

(EME)• FipkeCentre

• Gymnasium• Library• ReichwaldHealthSciencesCentre(RHSC)• Purcellresidences(*Sample)• Science• UniversityCentre(UNC)

Onthedayoftheaudit,approximately47peopleparticipatedthroughoutthecourseoftheday,includingtwoUBCOstaff(DerekMahoneyandRogerBizzotto),onefacultymember(Dr.MatthewNelson),threeGreenStepstaff,40studentsfromtheSUST100class,andoneotherstudent.ThemajorityofvolunteerrecruitmentwasgeneratedbyDr.MatthewNelson,professoroftheSUST100class.Thisyearheincludedthewasteauditintohissyllabusandmadeitaclassassignmenttoparticipateinthewasteaudit.Thecafeteriaprovidedrefreshmentsforvolunteers.StephanieFrenchsetupaneducationaldisplayinthecourtyardbesidetheauditandspoketopeoplepassingbyaboutwhatwasgoingon,andencouragedpeoplefillout“pledges”toreducetheircarbonfootprint.AndreaMackintosh,WendyWright,andMariaMarshfacilitatedtheeventbyhelpingtosetup,greetingthevolunteers,facilitatingasafetyorientation,explainingthewasteauditcategoriesandprocedure,answeringquestionsthroughouttheauditprocess,collectingthedata,andhelpingtocleanupaftertheauditwasfinished.Theobjectivesofthewasteauditwereto:

• Recordthetype,volume,andcompositionofwastegeneratedatUBCOkanaganandbreakitdownbysource

• Raiseawarenessaboutwastereductiononcampusandgetstudentsinvolved• Identifybuildingstotargetwithadditionaleducation• Comparetopastandfutureaudits• Makerecommendationsforimprovedwastemanagementopportunities.

UBCOKANAGANWASTEREDUCTIONPRACTICES

UBCOkanaganhasimplementedseveralwastereductionpracticesovertheyears,somefromtherecommendationsofthewasteauditsconductedbyGreenStepinthepast.Mostrecently,UBCOkanaganhascompletedthefollowinginitiatives:

a) Developednewsignageforwastestations.“Sortitout”threeoptionsinmostplaces,bigger5-optionstationonmainfloors(seeimagebelow)

b) Designedandinstalledanewlargecentralizedwastestationinthecafeteria.ModelledafterUBCVancouver,butwithsignagespecifictoUBCO.Alloldwastestationshavebeenremoved.

c) Addedwastecarouselstopreventbinsbeingmoved,especiallybinsgoingbackintoclassrooms.TheyarecurrentlylocatedinArtbuildingandSciencebuildingonly.Theyneedabout100-125moretodoentirecampus.Targetingpublic/studentareas.

d) Createdawasteremovalflowchart,includingall17uniquewastestreams.Itcanbedownloadedfromfacilitieswebsite.

e) StartedrecyclingcigarettebuttsthroughTerracycle.f) Addednewsignageonthepapertoweldispensers(“itonlytakesone…”)toreduceusage.g) InstalledAirstreamhanddryersinthenewCommonsbuilding,withnopapertoweloption.

METHODOLOGY

Justasithasbeendoneinpastyears,quantitiesofwastewereestimatedusingvolumeratherthanweightfortworeasons:1)Wasteispickedupanddisposedofbasedonhowfullthebinsare,notbyweight.2)Itemslikepaper,plasticfilm,andStyrofoamweighsignificantlylessthanotheritemssuchasfoodwasteandareunderrepresentedwhenmeasuredbyweight.Oneday’sworthofwastewascollectedfromallareasofallbuildingsoncampus,withthefollowinginclusionsandexclusions:

• Theoutdoorcourtyardareawasexcluded• Thegarbageauditincludedthegarbagebinsfromthebathrooms,whichcontainmostlypaper

towel(*thesewerenotincludedin2016).ThismakesabigdifferenceinthegarbageauditresultsbecausepapertowelsmakeaupalargeproportionoftheoverallgarbagestreamatUBCO;in2014theywere29%,andin2018theywere34%,whereasin2016whenbathroomswereexcluded,theywereonly8%.Omittingbathroomwastein2016skewedthepercentagesofallotherwastecategories,thereforethe2018resultsaremorecomparabletothe2014audit.

• Thegarbageauditexcludedin-stallbathroomwaste• Thecompostcollectedfromaroundthecampusexcludedthecafeteriakitchencompost.

Becausevolumesweresolow,theauditingprocesscombinedallsamplesanddidnotkeepthesamplesseparatedbybuilding.

• TherewasnorecyclingcollectedfromtheRHSCbuilding.• TherewasnoseparatedreturnablesamplecollectedfromtheGym,Library,Purcell,RHSC,

Science,orUNC.Thesewereeithernotcollected,ortheyaccidentallygotmixedupwiththerecyclingsamples.

Itisimportanttonotethatsomesortingpracticedifferencesemergebetweenvolunteergroupsduringthesortingprocess.Forexample,somevolunteerssortedsoileditemssuchaspaperordisposablecoffeecupsintothegarbagewhileotherssortedthemintothecompost.Thesortingprocessisneverperfect.However,theauditingprocessisconsistentandreducesmostsortingdiscrepancies.ClearbagsusedforsortingduringtheauditweresuppliedbyUBCO.ThisyearGreenStepusedavolumeestimationmethodthatwasintroducedin2016,makingtheresultsdirectlycomparableto2016.Thenewmethodprovidesincreasedaccuracyandwillcontinuetobethemethodusedgoingforward.Ratherthanusingthevolumeofthelargeclearbagtoestimatethewastevolumeineachbag,thesortedbagsofwastewereplacedinoneoffoursmallerbinsofknownvolumeinordertomaketheestimation.Thethreebinsusedwerea76.7Lbluerecyclingbin,a60.6Lbluerecyclingbin,a19Lbucket,anda11.4Lpail.Aftertheauditwascomplete,thesortedbagsweretakenawaybycustodianstaffanddivertedappropriatelyaccordinggottheirdiscretion,i.e.recycled,composted,returnedforrefund,orsenttothelandfill.Volunteersworeprotectivecoveralls,shoecovers,andnitrilegloves.Theuseofsafetyglassesandtongswasoptional.

Onecategorychangedslightlysincethe2016audit;papercoffeecupswereremovedfromthe“paperproducts”categoryandgiventheirowncategoryinordertoisolatethemandbetterunderstandthiswastecategory.ThesortingcategoriesandauditprocessdidnottakeintoaccountRecycleBC’snew“otherflexiblepackaging”pilotprogramthatbeganonJune1,2018.Theitemsincludedinthepilotprogram(suchassnackwrappers,chipbags,zipperlockbags,etc.),whichcanbereturnedtoColumbiaBottleDepots,werecountedas“garbage”inthisaudit.

RESULTS

Resultsofthewasteauditarepresentedbelowandbrokendownintothefouraudits:garbage,recycling,returnable,andcompost.Asectionattheendsummarizestheresultsofallwastestreamscombined.Note:insomecases,percentagesmaynotaddupto100%,astheyareroundedtothenearestpercent.

GARBAGEAUDIT

Theresultsindicatethatofthe5,211Lofgarbageaudited,31%wasrecycling,5%wasreturnable,44%wascompostable,19%wasgarbage,and1%was“other”(e-wasteandreusableitems).Specificdetailsandbreakdownonthevolumesofwastecanbefoundinthetablesandfiguresbelow.Table1showsthecompletebreakdownofthegarbageaudit,includingthevolumeofwastefromeachbuildingandineachwastecategory,thepercentagesofeachcategory,andtotalsinlitresandpercent.*Note:semi-totalrowsoccurwithinthetableindarkercoloursTable1.GarbageAudit-Volumeofwaste(inlitresand%)measuredbytypeofwasteforeachbuilding/areaoncampus(UBCOWasteAudit,October4,2018).

RECYCLINGAUDIT

Theresultsoftherecyclingauditindicatethatofthe3,887Lofwasteaudited,75%wasrecyclable,10%wasreturnable,8%wascompost,7%wasgarbage,andlessthan1%was“other”(e-wasteandreusableitems).Specificdetailsandbreakdownonthevolumesofwastecanbefoundinthetablesandfiguresbelow.Table3showsthecompletebreakdownoftherecyclingaudit,includingthevolumeofwastefromeachbuildingandineachwastecategory,thepercentagesofeachcategory,andtotalsinlitresandpercent.*Note:semi-totalrowsoccurwithinthetableindarkercoloursTable3.RecyclingAudit-Volumeofwaste(inLitresand%)measuredbytypeofwasteforeachbuilding/areaoncampus(UBCOWasteAudit,October4,2018).

Theobservationspresentedinthissectionarefocusedonthegarbageauditresultsonly.Note:Thegarbageauditincludedthegarbagebinsfromthebathrooms,whichcontainmostlypapertowel(*thesewerenotincludedin2016).ThismakesabigdifferenceinthegarbageauditresultsbecausepapertowelsmakeaupalargeproportionoftheoverallgarbagestreamatUBCO;in2014theywere29%,andin2018theywere34%,whereasin2016whenbathroomgarbagewasexcluded,theywereonly8%.Omittingbathroomwastein2016skewedthepercentagesofallotherwastecategories,thereforethe2018resultsaremorecomparabletothe2014audit.

RECYCLINGOfallthegarbagebagscollected,recyclingaccountedfor31%ofthewaste(a20%decreasefrom51%in2016,andan11%decreasefrom42%in2014).Forthepurposeofthisauditandreport,recyclingisdefinedasthoseitemswhichareacceptedinthebluebinandbyyourcommercialhauler(plasticcontainers,paperproducts,cardboard&boxboard,tin&aluminum,andothercomingledrecycling).Ofthe31%inrecyclablematerials,thelargestsub-categorywaspapercoffeecups(21%),followedbyplasticcontainers(5%),cardboard&boxboard(3%),paperproducts(2%),tin&aluminum(0.4%),andothercomingledrecycling(0.4%).Thebuildingsoncampuswiththehighestpercentageofrecyclingcontaminationfoundinthegarbagewere:Library(44%),Arts(34%),andCCS(34%).

RETURNABLESOfallthegarbagebagscollected,returnablesaccountedfor5%ofthewaste(a2%decreasefrom7%in2016).Forthepurposeofthisauditandreport,returnablesaredefinedasthoseitemswhichareacceptedatthereturn-itdepots(refundablecans&bottles,glassjars&bottles,plasticbags&overwrap,andStyrofoam).The5%inreturnablematerialswascomposedofrefundablebottlesandcans(3%),plasticbags&overwrap(1%),Styrofoam(lessthan0.2%),andglassjars&bottles(0.1%).ThebuildingsoncampuswiththehighestpercentageofreturnablesfoundinthegarbageweretheLibrary(9%),UNC(7%),andGym(7%).

Approximately44%ofthetotalwasteauditedwascompostable(a25%increasefrom19%in2016,anda5%increasefrom39%in2014).Thisincludedpapertowelandnapkins(34%),bio-containersandutensils(7%),andorganicfoodandyardwaste(3%).ThebuildingsoncampuswiththehighestpercentageofcompostablematerialfoundinthegarbagewereRHSC(60%),Gym(55%),andAdmin(54%).Iflookingatfoodwasteonly(theonlysub-categorythatisacceptedintheon-sitecompostprogram),thebuildingwiththehighestpercentagefoundinthegarbagewasthesamplefromPurcell(14%).Allotherbuildingshad2-4%organicsinthegarbagestream.

GARBAGEGarbageaccountedforapproximately19%ofthewasteaudited(a3%decreasefrom22%in2016,anda4%increasefrom15%in2014).ThebuildingsoncampuswiththelowestpercentageofgarbagefoundinthegarbagewereASC(14%),Library(15%),Admin(15%),andArts(15%).

OTHEROtherdivertibleitemsaccountedfor0.8%ofthegarbageaudited(a0.2%decreasefrom1.0%in2016,anda0.8%decreasefrom1.6%in2014).Thisincludedreusableitemssuchasdishes,clothes,foodcontainers,andunfinishedtoiletpaperrolls(0.8%),andelectronicwastesuchasCDsandwires(0.0004%).ThebuildingsoncampuswiththehighestpercentageofotherdivertibleitemsfoundinthegarbagewereASC(4%),CCS(3%),andtheLibrary(2%).

OVERALL37%ofthewastefoundinthegarbagecouldbedivertedintoanexistingprogramoncampus(i.e.recycling,returnables,compost,e-waste),while44%hasthepotentialtobedivertedifnew/differentsystemsweresetup(i.e.otherdepotitems,compostablepapertowelandbiowares,reusableitems).Table8.Comparisonofthepotentialfateofitemsfoundinthegarbageauditfrom2014to2018.

RECOMMENDATIONSFORIMPROVEMENT

Thefollowingrecommendationsareintendedtohelpguideimprovementsinthecollectionanddisposalofrecyclable,returnable,compostable,andhazardouswastematerials.Eachsectionisaimedatcreatingprograms,policies,orpilotprojectstoreducewasteheadingtothelandfill.Educationandcommunicationareakeycomponenttothesuccessofeveryrecommendation.Alistofrelevantrecommendationsfrom2016and2014thatarestillapplicabletoUBCOcampusareavailableinAppendixA.Recommendationsmarkedwithanasterisk(*)indicatethekeyrecommendations.

REDUCINGANDREUSING

• *Convertmorebathroomstohavehigh-efficiencyhanddryersinsteadofpapertowels.Targetbusiestbuildingsfirst(Library,UNC,EME).Forverybusybuildings,considerthein-sinkstyledryerstoreduceline-upsforwall-mountedhanddryers.

• Duringtheaudit,itwasfoundthatthereareoftenseveralsmallblackgarbagebagswithinonelargeblackbag.Whereverpossible,havecustodiansemptygarbagebincontentsintothelargeblackbagsinsteadoftakingthewholebag.Takingthewholebagscanoccurwhennecessary(i.e.ifit’sverydirtyormessy)oronaregularinterval(i.e.onceaweek).Thiswouldreducetheusageofgarbagebagsthemselves,whichaccountedfor4%ofthetotalgarbagestream.

• Eliminateallsingle-useStyrofoamfromcampus.CreatepolicytoprohibitpurchaseofStyrofoamplates,bowls,etc.forspecialevents.

• Developapunchcardprogramwherestampsarerewardedwhencoffeepurchasedinareusable

mug.Once10stampscollected,rewardisafreecoffee.(ThiswasStephanie’sbrilliantidea!)

RECYCLING

• NewregulationsinChinahavedrasticallyreducedthetypesofrecyclingtheywillreceivedfromglobalmarkets,whichiscausingamajorupsetintherecyclingindustryworldwide.Lookingtothefutureofchangescomingtotherecyclingsector,getreadyforthepossibilityofseparatingrecyclingstreams,orothermajorchanges.If/whenthischangeoccurs,worktouseyourexistingbinsandinfrastructureeffectivelywhilechangingthesignageandcommunicationsaroundrecycling.KeepinclosecontactwithyourrecyclinghaulerandCascadesRecoveryaboutthisissueandtrytostayaheadofthecurvethebestyoucan.

• Considersettingupadrop-offlocationforRecycleBC’s"otherflexiblepackaging”pilotprogram.

DesignatesomeonetodropthisoffattheclosestColumbiaBottleDepot(680DeaseRoad,Kelowna)whenyouhaveenough.

• *Consideranadvertisingcampaignonpapercoffee

• Expandthe“sortitout”signagetomoreofthecampus.

• Makesureallpapertoweldispensershavethe“itonlytakesone”reductionmessaging.First

startwithbuildingsthatproducethemostwaste(UNC,Library,Arts,EME,Science)thenmakesureallothershaveitaswell.

• Papercoffeecupswere21%ofthegarbagestream,and43%ofthemoncampusarebeing

discardedincorrectly.Addsomespecific“nopapercoffeecups”signageonthegarbagebins,and“papercoffeecups”withagreencheckmarkontherecyclingbinswillhelptoreallyemphasizewheretheyaresupposedtogo.Dothisinbusybuildingsandproblemareas:LibraryandArts,thenEMEandScience.

• Consideradding/enhancingpapercoffeecuprecyclingsignageatfranchisecoffeeoutlets.

Leveragespace/surfacesownedbyUBCO(i.e.glasswindows).

• Thebuildingwiththeworstcontaminationinthereturnablestream(thatwascapturedbythisaudit)wasFipke.Majorcontaminantsweregarbage,coffeecups,andotherrecycling.Targetsomespecificmessagingonthereturnablereceptacles(andingeneral,withposters)inthisbuilding.

• CreateaSustainabilitycourse,includingasectiononwastediversion,in“Canvas”andanyother

onlinelearningplatformsusedoncampusthatismandatoryforstudentscomplete(once,eachyear,oreachsemester–repetitioncanhelp!).

• Thecompostbinsmustbeopenedtousethem.Considerusingthatstyleofbinsforotherwaste

streamsaswelltoincreasethoughtfulnesswhendiscardingwaste.

• Expandthewastecarouselstomoreareas(currentlyinArtsbuildingandSciencebuildingonly).Completeinphases,ifnecessary.Targetproblembuildingsandhighwasteproducingbuildingsfirst(Library,UNC,EME,CCS,andAdmin).

• *Thebiggestproblemareaoncampusisthelibrary.Whencomparedtootherbuildings,its

garbagestreamhasthemostrecycling,mostreturnables,thirdmost‘other’items,andsecondleast‘truegarbage’.Assessandscaleupallwastediversiontacticsinthelibrary;binplacement,signage,andmessaging/communications.

• Installanotherstationlikethenewoneinthecafeteriainthelibrary;thisisaproblemarea(35%

oftotalgarbagewaspapercoffeecups).

becausetheywereemptiedfrombinsmid-dayandheldsomewhere,thenalmostforgottenaboutonthedayoftheaudit.Trytoavoidthese‘secretstashes’byimprovingcommunicationamongstaffinvolvedincollectingbagsforthewasteaudit.

• ContinuetoworkwithDr.MatthewNelson’sSUST100classandperhapsexpandonthistypeof

volunteerrecruitmentwithotherclassesiftheauditcontinuestogrow.

CONCLUSION

The6thbiennialUBCOwasteauditwasverysuccessfulwiththenewteamofvolunteersfromtheSUST100classparticipatingforclasscredit.Thereturnablestreamwasaddedtothescopewhichprovidedsomeinsightintothetypeandquantityofcontaminationgoingoninthatstream.Similartothe2014andpriorwasteauditsamplingmethodology,papertowelwastefromthebathroomswasonceagainincludedintheaudit,insteadofbeingexcludedlikein2016.

Theauditresultsshowedsomeimprovementsandsomedeclines.Contaminationwithinthegarbagestreamincreasedsince2016,butthereweremanyrecyclableitemsfoundinthegarbageinlowerpercentagesthanthelastaudit.However,thereisstilllotsofroomforimprovement.Thedatacollectedinthisyear’swasteauditshowsthetwoitemstakingupthemajorityofthewastestreamarepapercoffeecupsandpapertowels,bothofwhichhavethepossibilitytobediverted.SincepapercoffeecupsarealreadyacceptedintherecyclingatUBCO,thisisworthfocusingonandincreasingeffortstoimprovediversionmovingforward.Itwouldalsobeveryimpactfultofindabettersolutionforthepapertowelthansendingthemtolandfill.NewregulationsinChinahavedrasticallyreducedthetypesofrecyclingtheywillreceivedfromglobalmarkets,whichiscausingamajorupsetintherecyclingindustryworldwide.Lookingtothefutureofchangescomingtotherecyclingsector,getreadyforthepossibilityofseparatingrecyclingstreams,orothermajorchanges.KeepinginclosecontactwithyourrecyclinghaulerandCascadesRecoveryaboutthisissuewillhelpyoutostayaheadofthecurve.UBCOhasbeenmakingmanychanges,additions,andimprovementstowastereductioneffortsoncampusincludingsomeoftherecommendationsfromthelastwasteauditreport,andthemainareathatneedsattentionremainseducationandcommunication.Withastudentpopulationthatisconstantlychangingoverandcomingfromdifferentculturesallovertheworld,itisimportanttoprovideeducationthatisunderstandableandmeaningfultoeveryone.Thismeansgoingaboveandbeyondsignsonwastebinstosaywhatgoeswhere;itincludeshelpingpeopletounderstandwhytheyarebeingaskedtotakecertainactionsaroundwastereduction,andinspiringadesirewithinthemtodowhat’sright.
