Basson and Nikita Hendricks were apparently swimming in “rough sea” at Milnerton Lagoon Beach, which has no lifeguards. According to local police spokes- person, Warrant Officer Daphne Dell, it is very dangerous to swim there due to the strong rip current, created by the lagoon. Dell also reveals the group of five friends were “enjoying alcoholic beverages” in a public space when tragedy hit. Basson and Hendricks went for a swim, but they were soon “in some trouble”, says Dell. Two of Booysen’s friends, Gareth Hendricks and Omar Dickson, went in after the two women, but when one of them also encountered diffi- culties, Booysen went in as well. Of the five who went into the ocean, only four managed to make it back to land. Dickson, Nikita Hendricks and Basson were apparently brought to shore by a surfer. Disaster risk management and Milnerton police divers searched for Booysen straight through the week, but to no avail. TygerBurger contacted Gareth Hendricks for comment, but he re- sponded via SMS: “I can give you the full story of exactly what hap- pened ... The other newspapers got it all wrong, but I am going to want payment for the story.” Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the disaster risk management spokes- person, says: “The City of Cape Town appeals to bathers not to swim under the influence of alcohol and not to swim at beaches where there are no lifeguards.” He also urged beach-goers to be cautious when swimming, as rough seas and strong currents make con- ditions dangerous for swimmers. “In the event of a life-threatening emergency, the public is requested to dial 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.” According to www.lifesaving- wp.co.za, swimming under the in- fluence of alcohol or drugs is a cock- tail for disaster, “Alcohol consump- tion disturbs the functioning of the inner ear, which is responsible for balance. This effect is exacerbated with a sudden change in tempera- ture. Diving into cold water after drinking alcohol therefore disturbs our sense of balance and can result in disorientation under the water.” The website further states that al- cohol consumption impairs one’s co-ordination, vision and depth per- ception. ‘Beach drinking’ takes toll Milnerton’s Lagoon Beach is renowned for its strong currents. Homeless fed: The annual Christmas Homeless Meal in Brooklyn hosted by local resident Elizabeth Viljoen was a big success. Viljoen thanked everyone who contributed tothe meal in December which this year also included the donation of secondhand clothes, shoes and other articles. She singled out Jim Anderson of the Milnerton Lions Club andThe Little Lamps Club who sponsored Christmas gifts for the children.
Unsecured loads threatThe increasing incidence of unsecuredloads on trucks is adding to the potentialdanger on roads in respect of motorists, cyclists and even pedestrians.
This is a matter of grave concern to sub-council chairman and ward councillor,James Vos.
According to Vos more and more heavy ve-hicles are using residential roads as short-cuts to their destinations, or to the N1 or N7,including Vryburger and De Grendel ave-nues in Bothasig, Edgemead Drive in Edge-mead, as well as Plattekloof Road and Tyger-bergvalley Road between Richwood andBothasig.
Vos cites one of the worst examples as thetrucks from the quarries on Tygerberg Val-ley Road, where inadequate securing of theirloads leads to countless stones being droppedonto the roads. These stones have apparentlycaused many accidents on the nearby Plat-
tekloof Circle, because vehicles have skid-ded on this loose and unexpected surface.
Vos explains that every day more stonesare added to those already lying there, and“every one is as lethal as a bullet if caughtat the right angle by a vehicle tyre and firedat one of the unwary schoolchildren walkinghome from Bothasig to Richwood”.
Vos continues: “There have been manyshattered windscreens, and much damagedpaintwork – totally unnecessary expenseswhich the average citizen can ill afford in thepresent economic climate.”
Vos has addressed an urgent letter to thecity manager, requesting that the area clean-ing department be instructed to clear this de-bris. “Ideally, checking of vehicles withoutsecured loads, which is strictly illegal, should form part of the department’s normaloperational programme, and severe actionshould be taken against these, as well asheavy fines imposed,” he concludes.

Boy saves sister from flamesBoy saves sister from flamesANDRÉ BAKKES
Eleven-year-old Tristan Syair from Mil-nerton was the hero of a tragic tale lastweek Sunday when his family’s housewent up in flames.
Tristan braved the scorching fire and suf-focating smoke while he saved his six-month-old sister, Dominic, from her room.
According to his mother, Karen, Tristanwas the only person who was thinking clear-ly amid the chaos.
“He realised Dominic wasn’t outside withthem, so he jumped through the window andmanaged to get her out of the house beforeit was too late,” says Karen.
It was just an ordinary Sunday morningforKaren, herboyfriendBruno, andher chil-dren, Aditya (13), Tristan and Dominic.
“I made breakfast for the children andthen I went to my room to get dressed,” re-calls Karen.
Moments later the Syairs’ house startedfilling up with smoke.
“Everything happened so fast! I ran to thefront door with the children, but it waslocked and we couldn’t get out. I ran back tothe room and grabbed the car keys, but inthe meantime the children jumped out of thewindow. There was thick, black smoke eve-rywhere and I was very confused,” she con-tinues.
Karen and her children escaped withoutsustaining any injuries, but Bruno receivedcut wounds on his back.
A part of the house exploded moments af-ter he jumped out through the window.
And so it transpired that the family stoodby helplessly while all their earthly posses-sions were quickly consumed.
In her panic, Karen wanted to go to her
mother’s house to get another hosepipe, butit was all for nought. The fire brigade was, however, able to save parts of the housethanks to their rapid response.
The family slept in a hotel for a few eve-nings, but they have now returned to thehouse, because one of the rooms was not toobadly damaged in the fire.
Says Karen: “There is of course no wateror electricity and there is soot everywhere. It also smells terrible.”
It has obviously been quite an ordeal for
the family. A few days after the incidentKaren “collapsed”, but she has no medicalaid and has not yet gone to the doctor.
Some well-wishers, including MilnertonPrimary School, have helped them pullthrough by donating school clothing andbooks to the two brothers.
They are still in desperate need of assist-ance in whichever way, so anyone who canhelp must contact Karen on 071 071 2681.
She concludes, “God wanted us to live, soI’m not worrying about anything else!”
Fire ravaged a house in Milnerton, leaving its inhabitants asking for help.

Indaardie dae was skaapvleis baiegoedkoper as hoendervleis, so onshet hoender gekry as ons nou lek-ker ge-treat was!”

City fixing certificates delayThe City of Cape Town has apolo-gised to residents for delays inthe issuing of rates clearancecertificates, which in turn delaysthe registration of propertytransfers.
Priya Reddy, spokesperson forexecutive deputy mayor Ian Neil-son, said in a media release they areaware of residents’ frustration.
“The City understands residents’frustration in that the delay placesstrain on parties awaiting the final-isation of a property transaction.
“Residents are assured that theCity is doing all that it can to re-solve the problem and restore its
high level of service of issuing thepayment schedule within fiveworking days and the clearance cer-tificate within ten working days ofpayment being made,” she said.
On 28 November last year, theCity implemented a new system forthe processing of, among otherthings, rates clearance applica-tions.
The new system will ultimatelyensure that applications are han-dled more efficiently.
“During the switch-over to thenew system, there were unforeseendata and technical problems thatarose from the city’s side, as well asthat of the vending systems used by
the attorneys for electronic ratesclearances,” Reddy said.
Council staff attended to the prob-lem immediately and have beenworking overtime to resolve thematter and additional staff havebeen assigned.
“Since implementation of thisnew system more than 5 300 ratesclearance applications have beenreceived of which 4 200 have al-ready been processed.
“The City receives more than 200rates clearance applications perday and is confident that these, plusthe bulk of the backlog, will be erad-icated within the next two weeks,”Reddy assured the public.

MyCiti feeder station in progressConstruction on the new, perma-nent Table View feeder station inBlaauwberg Road for the MyCiTibus service started last week.
The construction of this station isthe next step of the phased roll-outof feeder stations along BlaauwbergRoad and also forms part of thegreater Integrated Rapid Transit(IRT) project which will see Atlan-tis linked with the city centre.
Construction is expected to takebetween four and six months.
The Table View feeder station isbeing built to accommodate thenine-metre buses that will soon beintroduced to replace the 12m busescurrently running the MyCiTi feed-er services in Table View, Park-lands and Blaauwberg.
This phase of station construc-tion signals a milestone in extend-ing the MyCiTi service: the feeder
stations on Blaauwberg Road willcater for the expansion of the serv-ice eastwards. Future buses to At-lantis and Mamre will dock at thestation that was previously used forfeeder services in Table View, Park-lands and Blaauwberg.
There will be minimal traffic dis-ruption, as no general traffic laneswill be closed during the construc-tion of the feeder station.
One of the two red MyCiTi bus
lanes will however be closed duringthe construction.
This lane will be used as a rampfor pedestrians needing to accessthe trunk station from the Pentz/Blaauwberg Road intersection. This is necessary as the ramp on thestation will be closed during theconstruction.
Directional signage will be erect-ed to assist road users and pedestri-ans. The safety of pedestrians is
paramount. This will be ensuredthrough the erection of a concretebarrier between the new walkwayand the bus lane still in operation, and a fence between the walkwayand the construction area.
More information will be madeavailable at www.capetown.gov.za/myciti.

MyCiTi bus‘growing inpopularity’The MyCiTi bus ridership figures overthe festive season indicate that more peo-ple continue to make use of the serviceto travel in and around the City.
The city was both surprised and pleasedby the figures. The average daily ridershipon weekdays on all the services totalled ap-proximately 11 497 per week, compared toapproximately 11 248 in November.
Passenger trips – where one trip is count-ed as one person’s complete journey, regard-less of how many times they change fromfeeder to trunk buses and vice versa (exclud-ing airport services) are 11 093 (week one),10 063 (week two), 10 119 (week three) and9 142 (week four consisting of 10 days).
Encouraging to see is the increase in theuse of the passenger journeys on the airportshuttle from 1 to 31 December, amounting to12 290, an 11 percent increase on November’sfigures.
“The passenger figures for the month ofDecember are very encouraging and excit-ing. During a month when many people takeleave from work we could have expected adecline in passenger numbers from previousmonths – as is experienced by other sched-uled bus services in the city. The fact thatour passenger numbers have shown growthfrom November is good news and is a clearindication that the service is taking root asa public transport service with substantialoff-peak travel,” says Brett Herron, mayoralcommittee member for transport, roads andstormwater.
Herron said they are encouraged by thefact that people are using the service fortheir daily commute to and from work butalso to get to and from recreational activi-ties.
“Many visitors to the city also made useof the service over this time, including theairport service which continues to see a slowbut continuous steady increase in the num-bers of riders using the service,” he added.

ALL drivers must wake upIn connection with the letter, “Taxi driverbasics” in 18 January’s TygerBurger:
Liz has some interesting suggestions re-garding the complete disrespect taxi drivershave for the law as well as anyone else onthe road.
Would it not be easier and more correct toput our heads together to the non existenttraffic department, who are supposed to en-force traffic laws?
These people spend all day renewing driv-er’s licences when their presence should bevisible on the roads each and every day, forc-ing drivers to drive as they were taught to.
Roads have become a Wild West with bothtaxis and normal people disobeying red
lights, etc. They drive with lights on in theday and sit in the right hand lanes as if thisis OK. When I was taught road safety atschool, we were told to drive on the left andpass on the right. I have seen 10 vehicles inthe right lane and the left lane is empty.
This is absolutely shocking and breedsroad rage. The fact is, we are as bad as thetaxi drivers we condemn – the entire drivingcommunity needs to be shaken back to driv-ing respectfully. This situation is solely inthe hands of the traffic department, which asfar as I am concerned is a disgrace to whatit used to be.

Literacy levelsare appallingThe Western Cape Education Departmentcan no longer bury its head in the sand –our children cannot read, write or do basicmaths. It is a dire situation that needs ur-gent attention.
The result of the most recent literacyand numeracy assessment, is nothing lessthan appalling.
Even more dreadful and worrisome isthe education department’s statement onthe results in which they described the re-sults as mostly “pleasing”.
Since when can a score of 30,4 percent(for Grade 3 literacy and language) becalled “pleasing”? What happened to striv-ing for excellence?
Almost 240 000 pupils in Grades 3, 6 and9 were tested last year and the results area bad reflection on teaching in the prov-ince. The Grade 3 pupils only managedjust over 30 percent for literacy and lan-guage, the Grade 6 pupils only managed31,5 percent and the Grade 9s 44,2 percent.
The numeracy and maths figures arejust as bad with the Grade 3s scoring 47,6percent, the Grade 6 pupils 23,4 percentand the Grade 9s only 10,4 percent (and no,the 10,4 is not a typo).
The department’s defence? The testswere set at a much higher standard thanprevious years – on an international level.
Let’s hope they take heed and come upwith some practical solutions – somethingthat’s worth the paper it’s written on.

Fynbos tobe protectedI, like so many people, sit in a ridiculousqueue of traffic every morning for one rea-son: a greedy company called Aska Prop-erty Group and their refusal to set asidesome land to protect our beautiful fynbos.
The Cape Town City Council wants 90hectares of highly sensitive fynbos to beprotected as part of the huge new Park-lands extension. Aska Property Grouprefuses to set this land aside even thoughthis will have a huge benefit to the wildlifeand the appeal of the entire area.
Aska is now holding the whole of TableView hostage by refusing to build thesmall section of road between SandownRoad and the new road already completedby the council until the council backsdown.
Come on Aska, you have profited formany years from selling land in TableView.
It’s time you gave something back toyour community.
RORY HERMANEmail
Tony Clarke, marketing director ofAska Property Group replies:
We share the readers’ frustration andlike them, we also want the road to gothrough.
And we will fund this once suitable con-ditions of approval are in place.
Given the conditions that were imposed, the application needed to be amended.
This amendment was submitted to theCity of Cape Town’s Spatial Planning, En-vironment and Land Use ManagementCommittee (Spelum) last year where it wasapproved, and it presently sits with Prov-ince for their approval (which we expectthis quarter).
Once this approval is obtained, our sub-division application will be submitted tothe city, andupon suitable approval thereoftogether with resolution of the extent of thefynbos reserve (which we understand is be-ing dealt with) we can proceed.

Of sal ekmoet trek?

WHERE DO I GET MY CARD?
The card is available at allMyCiTi bus stationswith open kiosks andalso on feeder buses.
WILL IT COST ME ANYTHING?
There is a once-off R22 activation fee for the card. Cardholderswishingto redeem the activation fee can hand in the card for a refund, providedthey keep their receipt.
HOW DO I USE THE CARD?
1. Loadmoney onto your card at an openMyCiTi station kiosk.
2. Tap the card against a validator, which looks like the one in thepicture below, as you enter a station or board a bus.
3. Youwill hear a beep, and all four green lights above the screen onthe validatorwill flash. The appropriate fare is then deducted fromyour card.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I LOAD ONTO THE CARD?
Aminimal banking fee of R1.50, or 2.5%of the total amount loaded, ischarged on each transaction. The break-even point, atwhich you paytheminimum fee, is R65. However, up toR1500 can be loaded at anyone time. TheCity encourages all regularMyCiTi passengers to buyaweek ormonth’sworth of travel ahead of time. Thiswill help you tobudget for you transport needs, aswell as save the time youwouldotherwise spend standing in queues at the kiosks to load value.
WHEN WILL DISCOUNTS BE AVAILABLE?
Later in the year, transit productswill becomeavailable for regulartravellers, whowill be able to buy bulk travel upfront. Therewill be nobanking fee on these purchases. A further discount for off-peak travelwill also be introduced. Thesewillmake the cost of travel onMyCiTievenmore reasonable.
HOW DO I KNOWWHEN I NEED TO TOP UP?When you have less thanR20 left on your card, youwill hear twobeepsas you tap the card against the validator. This indicates that you shouldtop up at aMyCiTi station kiosk as soon as possible. You can also checkyour balance and obtain amini-statement at any station kiosk.
WHY IS THE CITY OF CAPE TOWNINTRODUCING THE CARD?The implementation of themyconnect card is in linewith a directivefrom theNational Department of Transport, which requires faresystemsof this kind to be introduced on public transport in allmajorSouthAfrican cities. Themyconnect card inCapeTown is the pilotproject for this system, and is helping to transformour public transportinto a network comparablewith the best in theworld.
The card gives passengers smoother, faster access to the busesand stations as there is no need to buy or produce tickets andwait forthem to be torn. There is also no need to carrymoneywith you to payfor the fare every time you catch a bus. Instead, you can plan aheadand budget better, paying upfront for travel for aweek ormonth,or evenmore.
The cardwill help theCity of CapeTowneliminate the problemoffare evasion and the high cost of printing and issuing the paper tickets, thereby saving the taxpayers’money.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS FORPASSENGERS?
Another advantage of themyconnect card is that it introduces abanking product to people who have never used debit cards before.Cardholders can use themyconnect card to make purchases of upto R200 at any retailer that allows debit card transactions. This canbe done by inserting the card into a cardmachine and punching inyour PIN code, or simply tapping the card against a validator.
Themyconnect card is essentially a banking product, and intime several banks will be introducing this type of functionalityon their debit cards. This means that users will be able to usetheir own bank cards on the system and will not have to buy themyconnect card.
Themyconnect card is one aspect of our vision for MyCiTi,which is to introduce all the best possible technology to create aworld-class public transport system.

The Sunningdale City Football Club has grown in leaps andbounds since it was formed back in 2007, winning the pres-tigious award as the Best Junior Club in the Cape Town Ty-gerberg Football Association (CTTFA) last season.
And this forthcoming season, the club is geared to repeat thisfeat.
The club currently consists of four senior men’s teams, a wom-en’s team, six u-7 and u-9 teams, three u-11 and u-13 teams andtwo u-15 and u-17 teams.
“We are very excited about the future ofthe club, and extremely proud of the acco-lade our juniors received.
“Ouru-11Asidehavebeenpromoted to theSuper League for the coming season, start-ing in April.
“Most of the boys in this age group startedtheir soccer at u-7s or u-9s level and it is testi-mony to the club’s dedication and the com-mitment of their previous coaches.
“The u-13s narrowly missed out on promo-tion to the next league, while the u-17B sidedid win promotion and the u-15Bs narrowlylost in the final of the knock-out competi-tion.
“One of the reasons for our success is thatat the younger age groups from u-7 to u-11and u-13 to a lesser extent, the coaches arecompelled to rotate the players through dif-ferent playing positions on the field.
“We believe that this is the best way to ful-ly develop the youngsters and allow them todecide in future which is the best positionon the field for their particular talents,” saidShaun Johannsen, head of juniors at theclub.
The club is also proud of its strong affilia-tions with Cape Town’s two PSL clubs, AjaxCape Town and Santos FC. Derby days werehosted between these clubs last year.
But it is off the field relationships that theclub benefits from most. The club also at-tracts players from Du Noon and surround-ing areas. Where these players are not ableto meet the financial needs by paying theirannual fees, they are sponsored by the clubor its members.
The club also boasts some of the best flood-lights in the Western Cape, allowing forgreat night games.
Applications for membership for the 2012season are now open. Trials will be hostedin early February.
Phone the club captain, Matthew Harveyon 084 739 6429 or email Mandy Woodyatt [email protected] or www.sunningda-lecityfc.co.za.

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free
raise your hands!
www.eskom.co.za/idm
Five years ago, we managed to convertmillions of South Africans to using CFLenergy saving light bulbs and savedyou money. Now, five years later, we’reback to change your energy saversthat have reached the end of theirlife. Continue to use energy savers tocollectively save South Africa’s energy.
Energy saving lightbulbs have anenvironmental benefit because theycut your lighting cost by using lesselectricity and last up to eight timeslonger, resulting in a reduction ingreenhouse gases. The small amountof mercury that energy savinglightbulbs contain is almost used upby the time the lightbulb is ready fordisposal. So try not to break the lamp anddispose of CFLs at participating retailers.
Old CFLs can be exchangedfor new ones in two ways:
a. There will be a door-to-door exchange(people will come to your door to dothe exchange).
b. Self exchange points will be set up incertain areas, where you will be ableto go and do the exchange.
Don’t miss out!Save energy and save money!
The exchange period will run from November 2011 to January 2012.
Milnerton stewig insaal teen Kuilsrivier
SAREL BURGER

The sixth Laguna Mall Kiteboard Seriesgets under way tomorrow (Thursday)evening.
Oswald Smith from Stellenbosch compet-ing for team Airush was the overall winnerof the fifth series that finished in December.
Competitors had to prove their skills inthe three disciplines of wave riding, racingand freestyle.
Colin Heckroodt (North) from SomersetWest had a tough time after his winningstreak in the initial events. Heckroodtclaimed four victories in a row and seemeduntouchable for the last five tour stops.
Things took a turn for the worst howeverwhen he lost his favourite race board at seaduring the fifth leg of the series. Leading therace, Heckroodt’s kite lines tangled with
those of Dutchman Rolf van der Vlugt whowas in second place. Both riders had to befished from the water by the lifeguards.
The only local to achieve a spot on the po-dium was Table View’s James Busse(Cabrinha) whose consistency paid offthroughout the series.
The upcoming sixth series will also caterfor a master’s category (kiters 40 years andolder) as well as a new discipline for condi-tions where the wind speed is more than 25knots – the figure of eight slalom event is setto be a very exciting format of and easy tofollow for the spectators. “Equipment will beavailable for use by entrants free of charge. So competitors do not have to invest in spe-cialised racing equipment, they can justmake use of their twin tip boards,” said raceorganiser Olaf van Tol.
