Some 20 workers were “slightly” over- come by the fumes, so the plant was evacuat- ed while Fire and Rescue Services and the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Manage- ment Centre carried out their inspection. This is the second incident in eight days in the vicinity where people had to be evacu- ated due to some sort of leak. Last week Saturday 500 traders and pa- trons in Paarden Island had to be evacuated after a Chevron oil refinery pipe leaked a harmful substance. Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the head for Systems Integration, Special Projects and Disaster Operations from the Disaster Risk Management Centre says these incidents were probably caused by lack of proper maintenance, but he emphasises that they cannot be certain until they receive the re- ports from the companies involved. Evacuation He elaborates on Monday’s incident: “At 13:53 the city was informed of an emergency incident where ammonia was released into the atmosphere in the Montague Gardens In- dustrial area. “Upon arrival the workers at the Igloo Ice plant that is situated on the corner of First and Sixth streets were evacuated. As a result of the uncontrolled ammonia emission at the facility 20 people were slightly overcome by the fumes.” Both he and the plant management say that it “wasn’t significant and didn’t severe- ly affect the atmosphere”. At room temperature, ammonia is a col- ourless, highly irritating gas with a pun- gent, suffocating odour. Solomons-Johannes adds that some of the workers were nauseous when they inhaled the gas, but everyone has since recovered. Exposure to high concentrations of ammo- nia in the air causes immediate burning of the nose, throat and respiratory tract. He continues: “The emergency officials cordoned off the immediate precinct in the interest of public safety and then our person- nel made the area safe and handed it over to the management of the plant.” According to the plant supervisor on duty the cause of the uncontrolled release of the ammonia was a faulty safety release valve. Now the relevant authorities will investi- gate the incident in terms of the provisions of Section 30 of the National Environmental Management Act. Detailed report Solomons-Johannes says Igloo Ice plant and the Chevron oil refinery are required to provide a detailed report regarding the inci- dents; to undertake reasonable measures to prevent such pollution or degradation of the environment; to minimise and rectify the pollution to the environment; and to take any steps as required to minimise the effect of the incident on public health and the envi- ronment to the relevant organs of state. Solomons-Johannes uses the opportunity to remind companies that work with danger- ous substances that they have a legal man- date to ensure that all the necessary safety measures are regularly performed. The famous duo of Milnerton Canoe Club, bubbly TV anchor and radio presenter, Liezel van der Westhuizen, and paddling partner, Greg van Heerden, will team up for the second consecutive year in the colours of The Unlimited for one of Africa’s big five events – the Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon in February next year. The two paddling partners only teamed up nine weeks ahead of the 2012 race, but with one successful race in the bag and a couple of months to train together, they are convinced that they will better their finish time of 13 hours 22 minutes. They are currently using various conventional and unconventio- nal training methods to get the edge over opponents. Taking one for the team part of it all

“Ek het in 1988 bydie destydse Burgerlike Beskerming aange-sluit as ’n vrywilliger. Ek was eers nou be-trokke by Seeredding en het my eie boot indie operasies gebruik,” vertel Francois.
“In 1995 was hier ’n groot brandop Melkbosstrand.
Daardie middag was Fran-

During the last festive season, 170 incidentswere recordedwhere childrenwere separat-ed from their parents or guardians at swim-ming pools, beaches and other recreationalareas.
To address this problem the City of CapeTown launched the IdentiKidz programmeon Saturday.
The programme sees theuse of wristbands that willbe tagged on the arms ofchildren for easy identifica-tion.
The product that will beused is a plastic-type wrist-band up to 25 cm that isstrong yet lightweight(tough, long-wearing anddurable). The wristband isalso waterproof with a se-cure snap-lock for singleusethat is not transferable andthat can be identified at adistance. It features a unique identifier inthe form of a serial number.

I read in the TygerBurgerabout “Another Gold for CityParks” (Wednesday, 12 Decem-ber).
Maybe they received gold forTable Mountain’s fynbos, thecolourful Bo-Kaap and thefountain and flowers sellers.
Well, the “fountain” whichruns down towards the Fore-shore was full of discardedpaper recently.
They fail in other areas.I have sent a letter to Peter
Koen about the pathway fromMilner Road to the footbridgeacross Zoar Vlei.
This is not the first letterregarding this issue.
To date nothing has beendone by the City Parks aboutcreating a safe path for thepedestrians who use thisbridge (Milner Road inPaarden Eiland).
The Rugby side of thefootbridge at Zoar Vlei has anice path that was done withsome effort; this was completedsix to eight months ago.
I cannot understand what isthe delay in completing thesame type of path on theMilner Road side of Zoar Vlei.
Why the long wait and noaction?PETER LEVERSEmail(The City of Cape Town was
approached for comment butPeter Koen is on leave andcould not respond - Ed)
Pedestriansneed safe path
Had I not seen it with my owneyes and had the family aswitnesses, I would not havebelieved it – the most incredi-ble, shocking display ofdisrespect I have even seen inmy life.
It began on Saturday around15:00 where a group of 12 to 1520-something guys began togather a few doors down my
Social responsibilityseriously lacking
road.They parked their cars on
both sides of the narrow streetblocking the flow of neighbour-hood traffic, they gathered notonly in the front yard of thehost residence but in front ofthe gates of the neighbouringhouses.
Immediately their loudexpressions began piercing theairwaves of the neighbourhoodas the beer began to flow.
Shortly after 16:00, they had avirtual parade down the streetshouting and mocking irritatedneighbourhood dogs.
An hour later they returnedin greater numbers including acar blasting music.
By now they were becomingdrunk and the intensity steadilyclimbed until even hearing ourown TV became a near impossi-bility.
After chasing them awayfrom our front gate and remind-ing them that there were otherfamilies to be consideredincluding infants and elderly, they neglected to change theircourse of behaviour.
So, after notifying a memberof the residents’ association, thepolice were contacted.
When they arrived the realshock began to unfold.
First, the officers never gotout of the patrol vehicle.
They simply sat in the middleof the road and had a chat withthe boys.
The boys flowed through thegate, into the street surround-ing the patrol vehicle and beganposing for photos. One actuallyopened the rear door and posedas if he were being arrested.
This shocking display wenton for the entire time theofficers were on sight until theysimply drove away.
Frankly, I am not sure whatis more shocking; grown menbehaving in such a disrespectfulmanner towards their communi-ty and its authority or wimpy, armed officers refusing to takecharge of a situation. Bothspeak to the very core of manyissues this nation is facing withauthority and social responsibil-ity.
A CONCERNED CITIZEN
People should give a little morethis Christmas.
There are so many underpri-vileged people, yet we seepeople spending money onitems which are of no impor-tance. Yes, we all work hardfor our money and should spoilourselves, but think about aneighbour or someone who isless fortunate than us.
We can all donate somethingwhich could help feed a childor even a family.
Christmas is a time forgiving and it would be great ifa change can start with us andin time we will see othersfollowing in our footsteps.

Christmas a goodtime to start giving
I was astonished to see all thehype over the world, whichsome believe could be endingthis Friday 21 December.
When I surfed the internetlast week there were even waysshowing people how to preparefor this day.
All I can say is it is ludi-crous, no one can predict howthe world will end and especial-ly when. In the Bible and otherreligious scriptures it stateswhat people could expect but itis something only God knows.
No calendar, cult, religiousgroup or priest can predict this.
In 2000, we had peopleclaiming the world would endand 12 years later the worldstill stands.
People shouldn’t worry aboutsomething that no human willknow beforehand and insteadlive our lives to the best thatwe know how, as if each day isour last ... because we neverknow when the world may justend.

Everyone should do their bit this Christ-mas.
On Thursday 13 December undercommand of Colonel Jauari the StationCommissioner of Lansdowne police andmy team from the Ottery Baptist Churchvisited the community of Flamingo Parkinformal settlement in Lansdowne.
At the settlement opening prayers wereconducted and prayers were said for thesick. Two old favourite choruses weresung; “Die liefde van Jesus is wonder-baar” and “Fishing for Jesus”.
Januari was accompanied by Leuite-nant Ntubula the operational commanderand Constanble Nyacka the communicati-on official. A prayer was said by Januariand I could see she was a commanderwho has the interest of her community atheart. Cowboy stew, soup and butteredbread was served to the children andafterwards they received packets of chipsand sweets. This goodwill visit was just ahuman loving gesture to show that wecare and have the poorest of the poorinterest at heart. This goodwill exerciseis also an example that should encourageothers that have, to share or contributeto those less fortunate.

There was a definite festive cheer to the lastrace of the Primi Naish Downwind Dash Se-ries held last week.Being the final race of the year with only
a week and a half to go to Christmas the or-ganisers incorporated aCode-Reddress codewhich saw stand up paddlers with somegreat outfits take to the surf.As Chris Bertish (men open), Brigette van
Aswegen (women) and Ethan Koopmans(junior) have already wrapped up their divi-sions it was down to the fight for lesser plac-ingswhich became the focus of the race fromMilnerton to Bloubergstrand. The swell was pulsing with some four to
five foot sets making the paddle out a littletesting. Once out the back it was clear thatthis was going to be a long tough race. Verylight winds (for Cape Town) of 11 to 17 knotscreated runners, but the paddlers had towork for them.Greg Bertish had taken second overall
from Dylan Frick last week and he just hadto stay ahead of Dylan tomaintain this over-all position. Dylan however had other plansand put on a masterclass of lightwind down-wind riding getting themost out of the smallrunners on offer. His time was only 20 sec-onds slower than theweek beforewhichwasheld in proper 20 to 30 knots. The rest of thetop 10 field dropped four to six minutes offtheir time due to the light winds. Greg triedto hang on, but had to settle for second posi-tion, over two minutes behind. Third spotwent to Colin Heckroodt.Chris had to settle for fourth after getting
stuck mid-break at the start and then decid-ing to go around the rocks at Big Bay whilethe rest of the lead bunch braved the SmallBay gauntlet.Brigette van Aswegen made it nine out of
10 and although Mieshka Steyn and MonikaWohlgemuth have improved all year, Bri-gette has clearly established herself as theundisputed champof SAdownwinding. This
time round Tammy Robarts found someform to take second while Monika managedto take third, ahead of Mishka. In the juniorsEthanKoopmansonceagain
cleaned up while Kimon Dos Santos made a
welcome return to take second with firsttimer Dylan Maxwell taking third. In theMasters’ itwas all aboutPietroMus-
cas and Andrew Cille for the overall titlewith Pietro going into the final race with a
narrow lead. The latter maintained his leadand thus won the class with Andrew havingto settle for second. The Downwind Dash Series will continue
on 9 January.
