Hybrid cloud as bridge to all-in on AWS

The challenge• Multi-year cloud migration journey with goal of being all-in on AWS• Provide low-latency, real-time investment research, and insights• Eliminate overhead associated with managing and monitoring different

platforms for on-premises and cloud workloads

The solution • AWS Outposts on-premises running VMs and containerized workloads• Truly consistent hybrid experience with fully managed and monitored

AWS services both on-premises and in the cloud

Business outcome• “Lift and shift”: build once, run on-premises, and seamlessly migrate to

AWS Region when ready• Accelerate adoption of AWS across development teams• Improved business operations and end user satisfaction

“As we continue to modernize our data collection and software, we want to create a containerized hybrid infrastructure and easily deploy using AWS services. With AWS Outposts, we can build once and run applications on-premises and easily migrate our applications to an AWS Region where possible. Ultimately, this allows us to accelerate the adoption of cloud technologies within our development teams, keep up with accelerating business and customer needs, and support our long-term journey to the cloud.”

James Rhodes, Chief Technology Officer, Morningstar Inc.

Rehosting

Page 15: Two-Step Migrations

Why rehost?

Lift-and-shift is fast, cost-effective, and minimally disruptive migration.

• Migrate applications to the cloud with minimal or no changes.

• Applications are effectively “lifted” from the existing environment and “shifted” as is to the AWS cloud on Outposts.

• Lift-and-shift maintains the architecture constructs of your source servers so after migration there are no significant changes to business processes, monitoring, and management interfaces.

• Lift-and-shift can be automated with free tools.

• Use AWS services after migration to modernize applications later.

Modernization

Page 20: Two-Step Migrations

© 2020, Amazon Web Services, Inc. or its Affiliates.

Why modernize?

Modernizing while still on premises might be the best approach for some workloads that are tightly coupled to existing infrastructure

• Move from legacy workloads to containers

• Modernize Mainframe applications

• Enable CI/CD pipelines and a DevSecOps approach

Modernization with Outposts can also be the first step in a longer journey to enable complete re-invention, including serverless

functions with Lambda, and Serverless Containers with Fargate.

The two approaches to Mainframe Modernization

Migration

Incrementally move applications and permanently shut down the mainframe, usually within one to two years.

• Hardware Emulation – Legacy lift-and-shift• Middleware emulation – Legacy replatforming• Automated refactoring – Legacy conversion• Modern middleware replatforming

Augmentation

Keep the mainframe while incorporating the AWS Cloud into your operating model.

• Data analytics – Data replication• New channels – Mobile or Voice• Development and testing – CI/CD and emulation• Backup and archival – Cloud storage integration

How to get started

Page 37: Two-Step Migrations

© 2020, Amazon Web Services, Inc. or its Affiliates.

Step 1: select your compute and storage capacity

• Fully assembled, configured, and pre-validated SKUs with mix of EC2 instances, EBS volumes, S3 buckets, and built in networking

• Simply select a SKU and submit your order

• Smallest configuration starting at 4x m5.12xl + 11 TiB gp2 volumes, scale to hundreds of racks in an Outpost

• View your order status on the AWS Management Console

Page 38: Two-Step Migrations

Site assessment required prior to installationAWS delivers to your site in a few weeks based on your preferred delivery window

AWS installs and configures the Outpost to connect to the AWS Region and with your local network

Multiple racks at a site can be configured as a single pool of capacity

100+ racks in a single logical Outpost with additional networking equipment

Step 2: AWS delivers and installs the Outpost

Page 39: Two-Step Migrations

Step 3: Launch and run AWS resources locally

Create a subnet

Associate the VPC with your local network

Use management tools like CloudFormation, tagging, and Amazon CloudWatch

Start rehosting with AWS CloudEndureMigration, or modernizing legacy workloads
