1 Introduction

MediaWorks is a suite of applications combining simple-to-use video, sound, animation, andpaint/photo editors with a powerful multimedia authoring program. Easily create high qualityinteractive portfolios, training, lessons, reports, yearbooks, and presentations or linear projectssuch as slide shows, movies, clay animations and more!

MediaWorks' intuitive interface and comprehensive feature set allows users of all ages to createhigh-quality multimedia projects that rival those created with expensive, complex applications,at a fraction of the cost and learning curve. MediaWorks provides extensive interactive optionsfor creating menus and linking to external files and web pages. Furthermore, MediaWorks isboth object-oriented and time-based providing for flexible screen composition, and precisesynchronization of all media objects.

Deliver finished presentations on a computer or data CD/DVD, or exported movies on aconsumer DVD player, iPod, iTV or web page. Single-file interactive MediaWorks' projects areeasily shared and played back using the free Player applications for Macintosh and Windows.

Both the Macintosh and Windows instructions are included in this Tutorial. Most dialog boxscreen shots show both the Mac and Win versions. Screen shots of document windows areshown in Mac windows, but the contents are the same between the versions. There will beeither Mac or Win in front of steps where the instructions are different between the twoversions.

The movie files included in this tutorial are 320 x 240, with highly compressed audio and videoto minimize file sizes so there is room for additional resources on the MediaWorks CD.However, MediaWorks supports DVD quality video and audio, and project sizes up to 1280 x1024.

In the following chapter, you will learn about MediaWorks’ architecture, system requirements,QuickTime, the difference between interactive and linear projects, rendering, the variousdocument icons and where to go for support and additional training resources.

Architecture

MediaWorks is a suite of five separate applications:

• Author (titling, sequencing, linking, compositing & effects)

• Animator (2D cel animation program)

• Paint (paint & photo editing program)

• Sound (sound recording and editing)

• Video (video recording and editing)

Author is the main application and provides text editing, special effects, linking tools, a timelinefor sequencing media, and buttons to automatically launch the Animator, Paint, Sound andVideo applications for media creation and editing.

Page 6: Tutorials

2

• MediaWorks Applications - Macintosh

• MediaWorks Applications - Windows

A Project created in Author is comprised of one or more “scenes”. A scene is like a "chapter in abook" and may include any combination and any number of text, video, picture, graphic, animation, music, and narration “objects”.

System Requirements

• QuickTime 6.x or better

• DVD or CD drive

• 100 megabytes of available hard drive space

• 128 megabytes or more of memory

Windows

• Windows NT, 2000, ME, XP or Vista

• 500 MHz or better

• Sound card with microphone

• QuickTime Pro to encode the audio for Podcasts

Macintosh

• Any PowerPC or Intel-based Macintosh

• Mac OS X 10.2 or higherIf you will be using MediaWorks for video capturing, you will need a computer equipped withFireWire, USB-2 or an analog to digital video capture product, depending on your videoequipment.

Install QuickTime

QuickTime™ is a multimedia technology architecture for Macintosh and Windows, and isrequired to use MediaWorks. The QuickTime Installers are located on the MediaWorks CD, orthe latest versions may be freely downloaded from Apple Computer's QuickTime Downloadpage. Make sure to choose the “Recommended” installation rather than the “Minimum”installation option.

Linear Projects

Before you begin building a project in MediaWorks, you should determine whether you will becreating a “linear” or “interactive” project. Linear projects play from beginning to end and donot include buttons. An example of a linear project is a slide show, video or dynamic movie.Small linear projects with less than 100 objects may be created in one scene and then exported toone of the formats in the “Scene-Export” menu. Large linear projects with more than 100 objectsshould be organized into more than one scene. If you have more than one scene in your project, and would like to share your project with others, you will need to make a Player (.plr ) file outof your project and include the MediaWorks Player application.

Interactive Projects

Interactive projects include buttons and more than one scene. An example of an interactiveproject would be a presentation where the user could select from various options on a mainmenu. Interactive projects require making a Player (.plr) file out of your project before sharingit with others. MediaWorks Player applications are available for both Mac and Windows.

If yourproject does not include more than one scene or buttons, export as a movie as described inChapter 3. The Windows Player application opens Windows-built and Mac-built Player filesand runs under Win98 or above. The Macintosh Player application opens only Mac Classic andMac OS X Player files.

Before attempting this tutorial, you should complete the previous tutorials, and have at least 30megabytes of available drive space.

* Launch Author and open your project called Africa.

Setting Your First Scene

A folder will be created inside the folder where your project file is saved (default), called“Distribution”, containing the MediaWorks .plr file (Player document), the Mac Playerapplication, the Windows Player application, and the Autorun.inf file. Burn these four filesto a CD or DVD.

* (Win) Check the checkbox that says “Share on CD or computer DVD”, navigate to yourdesired location and click Save.

A folder will be created called Africa containing the MediaWorks .plr file (Playerdocument), the Player application, and the Autorun.inf file. Burn these three files to a CD orDVD.

The Autorun.inf file will cause your Player file to automatically launch when inserted into a CDor DVD drive on Windows. Its file name can be no more the 7 characters, plus the '.plr'extension, and there can be no spaces in the name. Do not change the name of the Playerdocument once the autorun file is created. Mac OS X does not support autorun CDs or DVDs.

The MediaWorks Player applications do not need to be installed on the end user's computer. They will operate directly from your CD or DVD.

Minimum QuickTime VersionQuickTime is required to play Player documents created from Author. You can set theminimum version of QuickTime that is required to run your project in the Make Player dialogbox. If the minimum condition is not met, the MediaWorks Player application searches for theQuickTime Installer on your CD or DVD first, and launches it if found. You may download theQuickTime Installers from:http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/The QuickTime Installer must be at the same level on your CD or DVD as your Player file, or ina folder called “QT”, or it will not be found by the MediaWorks Player applications. If theQuickTime Installer is not found on your CD or DVD, the MediaWorks Player application willgo to the standard QuickTime Download page online.Make sure to do the Recommended QuickTime installation, rather than the Minimum, for bestresults.
