Vision

Mission

An integrated person, actively involved in building Self-Governing, Self-

Nourishing, Self-Sustaining Mangyan Communities.

• Facilitate learning activities that strengthen Mangyan’s leadership, potentials and

capacities through culture-based and relevant education.

• Establish programs that promote, protect and develop indigenous knowledge

systems and practices.

• Establish programs on climate change adaptation and environmental protection and

development.

• Develop mechanisms for sustainable development.

GoalTo be a catalyst on empowerment, life-long learning and community building for the

Mangyan people of Mindoro. It aims to strengthen the Mangyans leadership potentials

and capacities as they journey towards meaningful and sustainable development.

Messages from the Director and the principal

Puspos ng biyaya at kagalakan ngayong 2011

- 2012 sapagkat marami ang nagtiwala sa

pamamaraan na ginagamit at programa na

isinusulong ng Paaralang Tugdaan.

Bunga nito, patuloy na pinagyayaman at

ibinabahagi sa iba’t ibang pamayanan sa

buong Pilipinas ang kakayahan ng Tugdaan.

Dahil dito, nagpapasalamat ang

Tugdaan. Sa mga taong nagtiwala at nagbigay

ng lakas at inspirasyon na palalimin ang

matinding paglalaan ng panahon para sa

pangarap at kinabukasan ng mga mangyan.

Ang taong ito ay isang taon na punong- puno ng

pag-asa at buhay. Ang pag-asa na nagdadala ng

inspirasyon na patuloy na pagyamanin at palaguin

ang pagtataguyod ng katutubong edukasyon.

Ang pagkilala at pagpapahalaga sa katutubong

edukasyon ang siyang nagiging gabay at daan

sa mas malalalim na pagsasaliksik sa mga

Indigenous Knowledge System and Practices.

Ito ang buhay ng paaralang na nagtataguyod ng

katutubong edukasyon.

Isang malaking bagay ang patuloy na

pagbabahagi ng Tugdaan ng mga kaalaman

at pamamaraan ukol dito. Dahil sa mga taong

patuloy na nagtiwala at nagpahalaga sa sistemang

pang edukasyong ginagamit ng Tugdaan, ito ay

malaking karangalan para sa aming paaralan at sa

buong pamayanan ng Paitan.

Ang lahat ng aming tagumpay ngayong taong

ito ay isang malaking hakbang upang patuloy

na isulong at bigyang buhay ang katutubong

edukasyon para sa mga kabataang mangyang

nagnanais mahubog at maging daluyan ng

pagbabago ng pamayanan at ng lipunang

ginagawalawan.

Kaya, maraming salamat sa mga taong naging

bahagi ng buhay ng Tugdaan ngayong taong ito.

the Year at a Glance...

The TUgDAAn Mangyan center for Learning and

Development is dedicated to providing Mangyan children,

youth and elders with innovative programs which foster

leadership and capacity to effect meaningful change through

culture-sensitive and value-based educational activities.

• Department of Education (DepEd) educators and

supervisors from Region 1, 2, 3 and 4 participation in

the Study Tour organized in TUGDAAN.

• TUGDAAN faculty as resource persons in the national

summit on indigenous education.

• TUGDAAN’s technical contributions in the

establishment of more IP schools in Luzon and

Mindanao.

• The Sustainability Program (Food Processing)

established more outlets which resulted to significant

increase in the sales and net income.

• More TUGDAAN students have passed the LET

examination. A number of students are renderng

services to IP areas/communities.

tuGDaan Celebrates 23 Years of advanced Cultured-Sensitive and Value-Based education for the Indigenous people.

• TUGDAAN experiences on IP Education has inspired many groups and educators in discovering opportunities to implement the same program in their own schools and contexts.

• TUGDAAN has become a model on IP Education for public and private schools.

• Many of the TUGDAAN graduates are now serving in various IP communities both within and outside of Mindoro.

• The drop-out rates has tremendously lessened for the past three (3) years.

• More organizations are interested of partnering/ supporting TUGDAAN and its various programs and projects.

Impact

A government-recognized secondary education program for the eight (8) Mangyan tribes

in Mindoro. It uses a curriculum and program relevant to the needs, realities and culture

of the people.

1. Celebrating Agpamago during the TUGDAAN week and graduation ceremonies2. Collected musical instruments of the Hanunuo tribe3. Celebrated IP month in October 20114. Translated the Missal to Mangyan-Alangan dialect5. Documented stories on Mangyan heroes6. Collected cultural attires of Hanunuo, Tadjawan and Alangan tribes7. Improved the exibition area of Mangyan cultural materials8. Classified the cultural materials collected by the students9. Conducted cultural mapping with the help of Pamulaan students10. Organized sessions and fora on cultural awareness and appreciation

accomplishments

• Many of the Mangyan elders continue to support the programs of TUGDAAN. They served as the source of information on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP). They readily made themselves available when requested to give lectures/ sharing on topics related to culture and core values of the tribe.

• The students have developed deeper understanding and greater appreciation of their identity and dignity as Mangyan people.

• Most of the non-Mangyans who have visited the Balay-Lakoy Center have expressed appreciation on the beauty, richness and sacredness of the Mangyan history and culture.

Impact

The Balay-Lakoy center was established in 1989 as the research, documentation,

and information arm of the TUGDAAN Mangyan Center for Learning and Development.

It has been envisioned by the Mangyan-Alangan elders as the heart of the TUGDAAN

programs.

The Center’s collection includes articles and write-ups of Mangyan-Alangan culture,

books and manuscripts, sound recordings, and artifacts. It has an exhibition facility

which features the traditional Mangyan-Alangan house architectural design. It also has a

performance space for cultural presentations and assemblies.

1. Established a Vermi-Composting Project with assistance from HOPE-Union Volunteers from Japan.

2. Collected fifteen (15) sacks of Vermi-cast.3. Constructed a green house for vegetable production.4. Established more garden plots within the TUGDAAN compound.5. Organized environmental awareness week in March 2012.6. Coordinated with Assisi Development Foundation for technical assistance on Sustainable

Agriculture.7. Organized a weekly hands-on practicum on sustainable agriculture in Sub-Sub

(TUGDAAN farm).8. Organized monthly bayanihan with the parents of the children.9. Collected books/pamphlets on agriculture.10. Sold 444 kilos of vegetables.11. Established an extension farm near the compound of TUGDAAN planted with rice,

cassava, lemon grass and yum.12. Fenced the extension farm with the help of the TUGDAAN parents and students.13. Planted 2,500 coffee trees.

accomplishments

• More students and parents are encouraged to plant vegetables.• The produced from the TUGDAAN farm helped in the nutrition of students staying at the

dormitory.• More parents are interested to practice sustainable agriculture.• More Mangyans are aware of the threats brought about by climate change.

Impact

The component creates opportunities for Mangyan people to deepen their awareness of

the realities concerning the environment and the role they have in protecting their natural

resources.

The program provides an excellent framework for environmental rehabilitation as its

goal is to restore the ecological balance of nature. The program provides avenues for

the Mangyan community to enhance their innate wisdom and skills on appropriate and

environmental-friendly farming systems.

1. Organized regular meetings with TUGDAAN parents and teachers.2. Facilitated leadership workshop for the parents organization.3. Coordinated with SANAMA, Inc. on various issues and concerns.4. Conducted social investigation during semestral breaks.5. Conducted learning sessions on literacy, numeracy and catechism in

various communities during practicum of the high school students.6. Organized Lakbay-aral and Immersion Program

• It develop students’ sense of volunteerism as expressed by them during faith sharing sessions.

• It promoted strong partnership and collaboration between SANAMA and TUGDAAN.

• It provided opportunities for the students to develop their leadership skills and abilities.

• It improved students’ self-confidence and positive attitude towards other people.

• It strengthen the relationship between teachers and students, parents and teachers, and with other stakeholders.

Impact

A comprehensive formation and training program for the out of school youth and

community leaders. It uses a development approach to learning that is geared towards

building a just, peaceful and humane society.

Organized meetings with the suppliers of raw materials.3. Distributed 6,994 bottles of processed fruits and herbal plants.4. Established partnership with the following organizations and business establishments for

marketing and distribution of products: a. Mangyan Mission d. Assisi Development Foundation b. SSpS Sisters e. OSB Sisters c. Advocafe f. Hotel Mayi 5. Established monitoring and tracking systems for stocks and products.6. Supported the livelihood of Mangyans coming from far-flang communities and nearby

communities.7. Promoted the local weaving industry by marketing the traditional baskets and mats of

Mangyan-Alangan and other tribes.

accomplishments

To help TUGDAAN generate its own resources for the sustainability of some of its

programs and activities, while at the same time providing hands-on training for the

students, TUGDAAN establishes and maintains livelihood activities like poultry, swine

raising and handicrafts making.

• It provided opportunities for the youth and adults to develop new skills like food processing and preservation.

• It supported the salaries of the people involved in the program.• It provided financial assistance to some of the school activities.• It created livelihood opportunities for the farmers especially to the coconut and calamansi

growers.• It encourage more Mangyans to plant fruit trees like Guava and others.• It provided livelihood far-flang communities especially for the marketing of their honey and

basket production.

1. Parents have a great role to play in encouraging their children to finish their education by not getting married at early age.

2. Poverty is still the main reason for students to stop from coming to school.

3. Regular Practice in speaking and writing English language help improve the students’ academic performance.

1. Create avenues for sharing and discussion on the disadvantages of getting married at an early age.

2. Policies and guidelines of TUGDAAN must be discussed regularly with the parents and not only during orientation at the start of the school year.

3. Review and improve the existing teaching aids for better learning of the students.
