“We feel that our data is safe and secure with Unitrends, they were our first choice for data protection and archiving.

Customer ProfileSouthwest Louisiana Electric Membership Corporation (SLEMCO) located in Lafayette, Louisiana was formed in 1937 as a private membership corporation for power generation. It is now a public electric utility serving over 100,000 homes and businesses in nine parishes of Louisiana abutting the Gulf of Mexico.

The ChallengeWhen SLEMCO added Nutanix and Cisco UCS servers and virtualized their datacenter their tape backup process became a liability. Kevin Edmonds, IT Manager for SLEMCO reports, “We upgraded to a virtual environment which challenged our tape backups. We were archiving to LTO4 tape drives. These backups were taking too long and required human interaction each day to load and change out the tapes to ensure that we had proper backups. We also had no real way of testing the tapes to verify that they were valid. Once we decided to no longer use tape, we needed to make sure that we could still protect our data and have the option to take the data off-site.”

The SolutionEdmonds continues, “I had used Unitrends at a previous employer so we knew that the technology worked. That made the decision easier since I knew we could believe the sales pitch that what we were told could actually be put into practice. We use the onsite appliance to backup both our physical and virtual environments. We also wanted to archive to the cloud. We choose the Unitrends Forever Cloud because it was cost effective and was a one stop shop for restoring the same data that is being backed up by the Unitrends appliance. We are also in the process of setting up Unitrends’ Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) to keep the data off-site and allow us to spin up 5 VMs in the cloud. This was the first step in finalizing our DR processes.”

The Results“Luckily we have not had to use Unitrends to restore any of our server information as of yet. We are creating a DR on-site rack that will allow us to test the server backups in real time. We do use it to take some backups of some PCs to protect data in the event of a planned termination or backup data before a PC is retired”

Edmonds added, “The customer support has been great in getting issues resolved and checking the settings that need to be changed as we grow.”
