    Principal’s

    Message

This week our school psychologist, Katie Cheney

is visiting on Wednesday. We are not ‘lucky’ in my

opinion to have the services of a high quality,

    professional, school psychologist (counsellor) from

the start of the year. Our students, your children

are entitled to this service. I refuse to have the

mindset that we are ‘lucky’ to fill teaching and

support positions in this outstanding public school,

just because we are in the country. Staff should

consider it a privilege to work in this school and

    public education.

Thankfully the perception of students visiting the

school counsellor has changed since I started

teaching. A visit to the counsellor in 1988 (I was an

accelerated graduate, graduating at 15) had a

negative stigma attached. Now, a school counsellor

to most students is just another link in a holistic

    school welfare system. School counsellors

implement specialist programs, act as a conduit

    between students and non-government and

government agencies, as well as the traditional role

of counselling and testing. However, a school

counsellor cannot provide long term intervention.

Parents are still responsible for parenting their children and seeking professional on-going support

    if necessary.

Our school is also lucky this year to still have the

services of Brenda from Rural Aid Buy a Bale.

Apart from her work within the school, Brenda is

available to assist farmers using the school as her

base. I am thankful Rural Aid does not believe the

effects of the drought are over just because a few

utes are splashing through puddles. Recovery

financially and emotionally from this prolonged

    natural disaster will take years.

Recent media reports about teacher standards

naturally contain a healthy dose of sensationalism

in order to sell print and air time. In my extended

career I have seen the expectations and

accountability on teachers multiply several times.

As Principal of this school, I am in the envious

position of having staff that I trust completely to

maintain high standards of skill and professionalism.

    The department has approximately 49,000

permanent teachers and 45,000 casual teachers.

Naturally, the skill level of these people varies just

as it does in every profession. To make blanket

statements may sell newsprint and air time but I

wonder if it really reflects the quality work that

    occurs in our schools.

Last week, our Student Representative Council and

Captains for 2020 were inducted. I believe the SRC

has an important function within the management

structures of this school. I openly express, I will make the final decisions in this school because I am

the person most professionally exposed. Principals

own all of the failures in schools and some of the

successes. However, I also listen to advice from a

variety of sources and the SRC is one of these.

This year, I have given the SRC a challenge to

develop ideas to spend the remainder of our

drought relief funds. I do not believe in holding

money in the school for a rainy day. If I did, until

recently in Trundle, I would still have my lunch

money. The criteria for this expenditure is

benefiting all students K-12 to and sustainable, not

    a one off purchase.

Last week, the first representative swimming

carnival was conducted at Narromine. As expected

our students displayed high standards of ability,

behaviour and effort. Last Friday was also the first

trip for our new 11 seat bus. I am very pleased our

students arrive at these events in new buses. These

buses not only make travel safer and more reliable

but a clean, new, modern bus also reflects our

positive school culture. I will never understand

why some people believe it is a negative to

celebrate and promote success in a public forum. I

want the successes and positive culture of our

school and your children to be promoted openly

and this includes what we drive. I am very sure

there are many Facebook warriors waiting to

highlight our possible failures, so why is it a negative to promote the successes?

James Ruse Agricultural High School has been the

top performing school in the NSW Higher School

Certificate for over 20 years. This includes faith

based and private schools that ironically are also

funded by the Australian tax payer. Last Friday,

James Ruse gave me the honour of being the special

guest at their formal assembly and delivering the

key note speech. This was a bucket list item for

me, as James Ruse I believe exhibits the most

positive aspect of Public Education. The ability to

provide opportunity to all students regardless of

race, socio economic status or geographic location.

You cannot purchase a position at James Ruse.

Students are accepted into this school through

their academic ability and sustained effort over

many years. I observed parents dropping students

off to NSW best performing school in tradesman’s

utes, old falcons as well as expensive European

sports cars. This school reflects that opportunity across NSW society is not only for those who can

afford to buy their ticket to perceived academic

    elitism.

My message to the students at this school during

my presentation was that they hold the power to

reduce the disparity of opportunity between city

and country by being willing to come to the

country as professional people. I believe this

country is rapidly developing a social divide based

on geography. They also need the courage to be

the first voice to say that entrenched inequality in

this country is unacceptable as their public school

education has given them a vital foundation for

    promoting social equality.

Ms Powell the Principal of James Ruse is an

outstanding person and public school educator. She

has agreed to provide work samples to our HSC

students to expose them to best practice. This is

across all HSC extended responses. Also, members

of the James Ruse SRC will visit our school this

year. I also intend to take members of our SRC to

James Ruse, possibly this year, but definitely next

year. James Ruse has also agreed to allow teachers

from our school to visit to observe best practice.

Ms Price will travel to Sydney in the next few

weeks to observe their agricultural program.

This school must be constantly looking for ways to improve. The product we are delivering must

match the needs and desires of our students and

community within the boundaries of government

policy and be as close as possible to best practice.

This is why I actively sought assistance of James

Ruse because they are the best. We cannot be like

Holden and provide and inferior product or only

target a small section of the market. Personally, I

think GM the parent company has a moral

obligation to re-pay the Australian tax payer for the

billions in subsidies and those existing customers

who, if the massive discounts on new cars are true,

now own a car of considerably lesser value that

    they paid premium price for.

This week has highlighted two entrenched

problems in Australian society, bullying and

domestic violence. Australia has unacceptable rates

    of both these social cancers.

Bullying by definition is prolonged and systematic

targeting of an individual. It is difficult to control because it occurs across multiple settings and takes

many forms. Indeed, I have had parents, staff and

principal colleges try to bully me on many

occasions. The worst is the subtle bullying when a

person wears away at a person emotionally and

then puts their hands in the air and pleads

ignorance when outed. I believe the solution needs

to be both prevention, punishment and promoting

individual resilience. Bullies in my experience are

often weak people looking for an easy target to

boost their own fragile concept of self. That is why

students who are bullied often select a target to

bully themselves, therefore the vicious cycle

continues. Often when students come to me in the

playground and complain about a perceived bully in

a game, I ask them why are they still playing? The

best solution is often for the dominate person in

the game to be isolated. Tough to play handball by

yourself!!! Move away, start a game with others

    who are cooperating.

Resilience, both physically and emotionally, is often

difficult to develop. In this school, students are so

well looked after because of our smaller size, that

they can develop learned dependence. Our

playground because of the size has more staff on

duty than our numbers require. Therefore,

students have an easy access to instant adult

support, when maybe a better long term solution is

for students to develop resilience, negotiation and conflict resolution skills in the first instance. Case

of the chicken and the egg question.

The horrific incident on the Gold Coast highlighted

    Australia’s chronic domestic violence problem.

One woman per week in Australia is murdered by

    a current or former partner.

When did this ever become acceptable? As Charlie

Pride sang: ‘no one knows what goes on behind

closed doors’, as recent incidents highlighted, even

those people who look like the perfect couple

could be hiding a ticking time bomb of violence.

The problem from an educator’s perspective is that

many of our boys are exposed to environments

where violence is normalised. Frustration often

coupled with alcohol or other yippee beans results

in violence and these substances are often given the

blame. I believe this is a crisis in our country with

no signs of stopping it. Education of our young girls

is, I believe, part of the answer as well. Do not

accept a toxic relationship. Have the confidence to

    be alone.

Student Representative Council 2020 The SRC’s work democratically to represent the

student body in school decision making. They

implement ways for students to participate

positively in school life. The role requires great

leadership skills where representative’s duties will

include being positive role models for their peers,

    actively participating in school functions,

organising school events and working with the

community for the improvement of the school.

We welcome the following students into the role

of being the 2020 Student representatives:

Stage 3: Jessica Morgan and Mikayla Penny

    Weekly Woof

Woof Woof Awards: 500 happy barks to our Gobondery/NARRAF

swimmers for your excellent behaviour and effort

at Narromine, the home town of Ou Arr Glen

McGrath. I know this because without fail every

time we travel through the town, Southo needs to

tell us. Mate, you are the one with memory loss, we have now developed selective hearing.

500 happy barks to Sydney media for helping

advertise for a family to come and open the

supermarket. Southo only had to make a few calls

and they diverted to Trundle. Re-opening the shop

will be a sign that prosperity is returning to

    Trundle.

500 happy barks to the new SRC members. This is

an important position of leadership and the

students need a voice. Time for action now guys.

How about a gold plated dog bowl? Mate, we have

two new buses for 112 students so surely anything

    is possible.

5000 happy barks to James Ruse Agricultural High

School. The partnership agreement between our

two schools will help each other for years to come.

5000 angry growls to those students who can take the sporting equipment to the oval but it becomes

too heavy to return. Southo almost blew a valve on

Sunday when he took me for a walk across the

school yard. He looked like Poppa Smurf, he was

so angry. His heart cannot take that sort of stress.

At times I hear students talking about problems in

their families. Families are not like on television. It

is natural to have ups and downs and sometimes

you do not like each other. My advice from a family of seven is, always remember that you are a child

and you deserve to feel special and loved. If you do

not, make sure your children do in the future.

    Until next week, Ajax

    Bark with laughter with Ajax:

Why did the lion spit out the clown?

    Because he tasted funny!

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students

MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if

they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in

any outdoor activities including lunch time play. We

keep a small selection of spare hats for those

students who accidently forget their hats. These

hats are washed regularly but are not to be used

every day by the same students. We will endeavour

to call parents to let them know their child has

forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please

make sure you put your child’s name inside their

    hat.

Swimming For Sport This term we are reducing the size of our groups

by sending one group to the pool at 1:00pm. This

group will return to school at 2pm, have lunch and

return to class for half an hour.

The second group will walk to the pool as per usual

and can be picked up at 3pm at the pool.

Alternatively, if your child catches a bus home, they

will be picked up at the pool.

Please check your child’s note carefully. If your

child is in the group from 1:00-2:00pm, it is

preferable for your child to bring their lunch and

suggested that they also bring extra recess.

If your child is ordering their lunch, it would

preferable to order something cold rather than hot food as the lunch orders will be dropped off at

1:00pm and the students in the 1:00-2:00pm session

will not be eating their lunch until 2:00pm.

Gob/NARRAF Swimming Carnival What a great day for a swimming carnival! All the students who attended the carnival swam

exceptionally well. Thank you very much to all the

parents who supported, transported and helped

    Secondary

Congratulations to the students who have been

elected onto the 2020 SRC. It was a pleasure to

see you receive your badges last Tuesday and I

look forward to seeing the progress you make for

the students here at TCS under Mrs Budd and Mr Burley. I’d like to particularly mention our 2020

School Captains Monique and Robbie. These 2 have

made such a positive start to their role this year. I

am impressed to see the trust that staff are already

placing on these students in their support of other

    students.

Last week I spoke about the HSC Minimum

Standard Tests for our Stage 6 students. I have had

to make some minor changes to the way we will be

administering these tests. I will be meeting with

Stage 6 this afternoon and will outline how these

will be approached at school. Basically we will have

set times for students to attempt these

examinations. These will be 2.00-3.00 Mondays as

    required by the individual student.

7-10 students should have received their

Assessment Schedules and Scope and Sequences

for their individual subjects last week. If there are

any issues with these could you please contact me

    at school.

At present we are reviewing our middle school

policy in regards to the mixing of secondary and

primary students during break times. In the past we

have allowed Year 5-8 to play together during

recess and lunch. However, this year there are

some circumstances [and I will point out that these

are not due to any negative behaviours] which we need to consider when allowing our older and

younger students to mix. For the time being we are

asking our secondary students not to play sports

    with our junior students.

We are finalising our preparation of student

Personalised Learning Plans this week for our

parent/student meetings in Week 6&7. We will

contact parents to make a suitable time for these.

This year the secondary department will be

emailing various notices to parents in regards to

your child’s progress. In particular notices of

commendation and concern will be emailed to the

address which is on record at the front office.

Please ensure that this email is one which is

    current and monitored.

As always if there are any issues please contact me

    at school.

    Trundle Junior Cricket

On Saturday the Trundle Juniors hosted the Waratahs at Berryman Oval. Trundle won the toss

and elected to bat first. At 4/67, the half way point

of the innings, both Slamming Sam and Captain

Paddy hitting a 6, the home side were in a strong

position. However, at the resumption of play,

wickets fell rapidly leaving the home side in a

precarious position being bowling out in the 24th

    over for 85.

In reply the Waratahs lost some early wickets but

a fine partnership between Gus Laing and Jack

Jones gave the Waratahs some confidence that

they could reach the total. In the 21st over,

however Reuben Kelly made the breakthrough

claiming Gus’s wicket, with Sam Charlton claiming

Jack Jones’s wicket in the next over. The Waratahs

were eventually bowled out in the 25th over.

It was an improved bowling performance by

Trundle conceding 16 sundries which is by far the

    best performance all year.

Runs for Trundle: Sam Charlton and Jim Ramsey

with 12 each, Charlie Anderson and Blair

Kelly, Sam Charlton, Charlie Taunton and Charlie

Anderson with 1 apiece, with Charlie Taunton also

    claiming a run out.

Williams and Sam Charlton each took a catch.
