Note from the Associate Pastor

Pastor’s Corner “Easter Life”

Dwight’s Nonpartisan and (Hopefully) Reformed Guide to Election Year 2012

Part 4. Church and State

The Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum raised a ruckus a few weeks ago when he criticized the separation of church and state. In reaction to reading President John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on the same topic, Santorum said, “What kind of country do we live in that says only people of non-faith can come into the public square and make their case? That makes me throw up. . . . I don’t believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute. The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country.”

Mr. Santorum raises a number of issues here; what do you think? Is there “absolute” separation of church and state in the United States? Are people of faith prevented from influencing public policy? Do you believe that any separation of church and state, however strong it may be, is a good thing, a bad thing, or a mixed bag?

In case you’re wondering where the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) stands, I think it’s safe to say that we Presbyterians consider the separation of church and state to be a good thing; see The Theological Declaration of Barmen in our Book of Confessions for an example of why. At the same time, we do maintain a voice in—or rather, near—the halls of power through the denomination’s Office of Public Witness in Washington. For more on “the voice of Presbyterian public policy,” see http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/washington/.

Wishing you peace and joy at Easter, Dwight

E aster is a celebration of life. If you have ever experienced deep loss, you likely find Easter to be a poignant, passionate season in your own life. Easter is preceded by death: an original finality that culminates in the lifeless Jesus being lowered into a tomb. I don’t mean to oversimplify the profound, but it would not be possible for us to embrace the new life of resurrection, without first appreciating the depth of the brokenness we forced onto the cross with Jesus. In the light of the resurrection, our perspective has been forever changed. There is a sense in which we are always looking forward and always seeking to see and experience: Life!

In that light, let me lift up for your examination and appreciation some “signs of life” at Trinity Church:

~ New Members in our midst who bring wisdom and energy and love and leadership!

~ A defining sense of Openness and Hospitality!

~ A re-tooled Pre-School Ministry that is transforming our community!

~ A wide variety of ways to be nurtured in the faith!

~ A commitment to Mission that is backed up by Action!

~ Leaders who volunteer to be members of Task Forces and Visioning Teams!

~ Presbyterian Women who offer learning and fellowship and leadership!

~ An energized choir and music ministry that is reaching out to an ever-growing audience!

~ A Wonderful Wednesday ministry that just gets better every week!

~ Building improvements that signal our commitment to the future!

~ Deacons who regularly share the love of Christ with all in need!

~ A palpable sense of love and community when we are together!

I invite you to join with me in identifying and participating in all of the “Easter Life” at Trinity and beyond.

Shalom,

Mark

Trinity Elders met March 13, 2012. Minutes of the Stated February 22, 2012, and Minutes of the Special Meeting

of February 26, 2012 were approved.

Ben Moore, Chair of Trinity Endowment Committee, made the following report to the Session on Endowment fund Activity through

2011.

“The market value of Trinity Endowment Funds increased $12,024.83 or 2% in 2011 from the value at the end of 2010. The two Trinity Endowment Funds, Restricted and Unrestricted had a total market value of $503,857 at the end of 2011. The Presbyterian Foundation manages both Funds in their Permanent Restricted and Unrestricted Accounts. The Foundation has recently changed from in-house investment managers to contracting with the firm of Cambridge & Associates for investment advice and

management of the Foundation holdings.

The funds held by the Presbyterian Foundation produced earnings (dividends combined with interest) for a distribution, in 2011,of 6% of the December, 2010 fund market value The total distribution paid by the Presbyterian

Foundation to Trinity in 2011 was $30,864.

The Trinity Endowment funds had $35,659 in outflows in 2011. This consisted of multiple

items.

On January 1, 2012 the Restricted fund at Trinity had $22,001.54 and the Unrestricted Fund at Trinity had $10,016.84 in its (Trinity)

Accounts.”

Finance Ministry Report was reviewed. Total Income for the first two months was $8.1 K over budget and Total Expenses were $12.6 K under budget. These favorable variances are primarily due to an unrestricted ‘love offering’, no Mission fund payments, and Building and Grounds being under budget. Linda Walker spoke to a $3,300 budgeting error

and proposed a solution that was recommended by her and the Treasurer.

Session approved the recommended solution.

Membership Updates:

New Members – Rick Beardsley and

Donna Dalton joined on 2/26/12

Request to transfer Brenda and Don Holmer to Balfour United Methodist Church was approved with regrets. Associate Pastor’s Report: Dwight Christenbury’s report recapped some of the major things he has been doing at Trinity including: preaching, Youth book study with senior high and college youth, Friends of Jesus, Ministry Committee support, Professional Development March 12-14, and

Presbyterian Women Bible Study overview.

Tim Kuykendall requested some ‘feedback’ on whether including ‘ads’ in the

Tidings is a good idea.

Hannan Music Task Force – Mark Stanley said that Gladys Davis – the new soprano soloist – began working on March 4. Music from this fund also helped to bring the Mardi Gras Blues Band for Wonderful Wednesday program, and will support

trumpets at Easter worship.

The Music Task Force has made an inventory of Trinity’s current hymnals and recommends that the church order a total of 400 hymnals for the sanctuary, choir room, library, pastors’ offices, and various Sunday School rooms. The Task Force proposes to begin a campaign of inviting people (by means of a bulletin insert) to purchase hymnals to give to the church ‘in memory’ or ‘in honor of loved ones’. The last date by which Trinity can take advantage of the pre-order, pre-pay discount rate of $15 a hymnal with free postage and free bookplates is December 31, 2012. Any funds not collected from individual hymnal dedications

Global Mission Ministry Spotlight on Barbara Nagy

Barbara Nagy, our missionary at Nkhomo Hospital in Malawi, Africa has just returned to Malawi following the death of her mother on February 23. Memorial gifts may be made to the Presbytery of Western North Carolina earmarked for Nkhomo Hospital to help purchase needed equipment (Barbara hopes to purchase an ultrasound machine if possible) or contributions may be sent to the Presbytery of Western North Carolina to help fund the costs incurred for Barbara’s return to Malawi. Please keep Barbara and her family in your prayers. Barbara reports through her last letter of November, 2011 that many challenges have been faced at Nkhomo Hospital. Malawi has been in the grip of daily prolonged power cuts and a shortage of fuel of all sorts for the past several months. She asks for prayers for an end to these shortages and for a just and wise governance of this country so that Nkhomo is able to provide the services needed for the people of Malawi. (Please see her letter for more details of the problems facing her, the staff and the patients at the hospital. It is posted on the Global Missions bulletin board.) If you have any questions about her mission in Malawi, please contact Pat Norris, Global Mission Ministry liaison to Barbara.

The Mission Statement of the Global Mission Ministry is:

The purpose of the Global Mission Ministry is to lead Trinity Presbyterian Church in its

efforts to share the Sovereignty of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the transforming

power of the Holy Spirit with all the people of the world.

This will be accomplished by participating in activities that minister to the needs of the

poor, the sick, the lonely and the powerless; by engaging in the struggle to free people

from sin, fear, oppression, hunger and injustice; and by encouraging hope in a peaceful,

loving world.

Trinity at a Crossroads Part II

The Financial Task Force has now completed the series of five parish meetings. These were attended by about 130 members in aggregate plus those who were responsible for the program. We received written communications from more than sixty folks, nearly half of whom identified themselves. Discussion was lively. Although problems weren’t solved in a few meetings, an important conversation was started. Many suggestions involved cutting costs, primarily in program areas. A few were bold enough to state that we can not go on without changes in the categories which account for most of our expenses, e.g. staff and mission. Others pointed out that changes do have consequences and that major cuts will change who we are and discourage members who work hard to support what we do. All the comments were kept and were read by each task force member. Session received our report at its meeting on Tuesday, March 13th. It contained a summary of our observations, and a set of specific recommendations which Session could take immediately to impact us in 2012. The recommendations were debated and most were adopted. A report of specific Session actions appear elsewhere in Tidings and you need to read them. Finally, we included some suggestions for a broader, longer range Task Force which was established by Session at its February meetings. Its members have been recruited, and it will be underway by the time you read this. The new group will consider what the future of Trinity in our community might be, what size congregation and support staff is likely to be possible and other issues which couldn’t be adequately addressed in three months. Our immediate recommended actions involve intensified efforts in both Stewardship and New Member Development as well as some modifications to the 2012 budget. We have recommended that Stewardship and Finance Ministries be separated (as used to be the case), that our entire mission giving be reported as a line item in the operating budget, that the capital budget be combined with the operating budget for 2012, and that the Wonderful Wednesday program and the Trinity Preschool aim for self-sufficiency sooner rather than eventually. We have also requested that the Hannan Music Fund Committee contribute $5,000 to the operating music budget in 2012. All of these suggestions were mentioned in the parish meetings. We were pleased to learn on Tuesday night that Wonderful Wednesdays have been self-sustaining for the last year. Thanks to Mike and Tim. I will produce one more report from the Finance Task Force trying to cover what may have been missed from our deliberations. I will also try to communicate directly with those who left their names as time permits. Then I urge you to follow the progress of the long range group. Remember they will be working in your behalf and need your support in whatever they do. Bob Baker, For the Financial Task Force

Mission Trip to Fuente de Vida

December 26-January 2

What are Mission Team Members?

“BRIDGES between those they visit and their congregation,

between God’s activity in one part of the world and

God’s activity in our own communities.” Become a part of the bridge being built between Fuente de Vida and Trinity. Help bridge the gap between children who live in poverty, and children who dare to dream of a better tomorrow. No special skills are necessary. God calls us all, just as we are. There is still a place for you on this years mission trip to Guatemala. Due to the length of time required to prepare a mission team and to work out the trip details it is important that applications are turned in now. Applications may be found on the Guatemala Bulletin Board. If you think you would like to be a team member but have questions please contact Carole Ball or one of the members of Our Guatemala Partnership Committee members. Prayer Concerns: It is presently winter and the rainy season in Guatemala. Dante (Bernice’s new baby) and several other children have the flu. Please pray for the health of the children and that they do well on their mid-term exams at school. Also pray for Maura (as she learns how to deal with her recently diagnosed diabetes), for all who are elderly and are finding life difficult and Karla Koll, Guatemalan mission worker who is undergoing chemotherapy in Guatemala.

by that time would be made up out of the Hannan Fund. Rob Tolleson made a motion to

approve this recommendation. Motion was approved.

Report from the Finance Task Force – Bob Baker.

The Finance Task Force stated that Trinity faces a problem which is deeper than an unexpected shortfall in one year’s budget. This committee presented some recommendations that Session can take NOW. While the committee believes that task forces can help, this is a SESSION problem and

responsibility which deserves its attention.

Recommended Session Actions Now:

1. Extend our budget freeze, excluding missions, as approved at the January Session meeting through 2012.

Motion approved.

2. Separate Stewardship and Finance ministries. Motion

approved. (There were three abstentions.)

3. Begin a newly energized Stewardship program NOW, with an immediate appeal to all members to reconsider our planned giving of both money and talents in response to God’s love to us. Incorporate in this effort better analysis of our giving experience. Motion

approved.

4. Aggregate all of our expected mission giving from budget and other sources (using 2011 figures) and include it in this years and subsequent budgets. Set the budget at 21% for all mission giving. Based on 2011 data, this will result in a reduction of about $13,000. If and when the new stewardship program bears fruit, take appropriate action to increase our percentage for mission giving, based on the information available at the time. Motion approved. (Originally the recommendation had been to set the budget at 20% which would have resulted in a reduction in Missions of about $19,000. After much discussion – Session voted

to change the percentage to 21 %.)

5. Contact each person who pledged to the capital budget and ask if they would consent – for this year only – to the application of their capital budget pledge to the

Buildings and Grounds budget. Motion approved.

6. Ask the Hannan Music Task Force to consider contributing $5,000 to the budgeted music program for

2012 only. Motion approved.

7. Ask those responsible for Wonderful Wednesdays and the Trinity Preschool to accept a goal of self-sufficiency for these programs ASAP. (Note: Wonderful Wednesday has already achieved this goal. Mike Cook presented a report sharing that they even have

made a small profit.) Motion approved.

8. Give immediate attention to new membership initiatives, even while the longer term group is deliberating. Save on small things wherever we can. Communicate,

communicate, communicate! Motion approved.

At our February Stated Session Meeting, it was decided to expand the ‘Financial Task Force’ and create a ‘Vision Task Force’ which would include more people representing Elders, Deacons, Congregation Members of varying ages

and Non-Members who attend regularly.

The following list of the “2012 Vision of Trinity Task Force’

consists of people who have agreed to serve:

Bob Forsythe – Elder and member of current Financial Task Force Ron Howard – Elder Linda Walker – Elder Shannon Slater – Deacon Don Widmayer - Deacon Karla Kiburz – Non-member Bruce Penn – Non-member (out-of-state June – August) Jay Barr – Congregation Member Nancy Kisner – Congregation Member

Bob Smith – Congregation Member

This 2012 Vision of Trinity Task Force hopes to have their

first meeting in late March or early April.

Mark Stanley appointed Bob Forsythe as the new

Stewardship Ministry Chair.

Information regarding the Finances of Trinity will be shared with the congregation in a number of ways: Bob Baker

Continued on page 11

Session Notes Continued from Page 3

will put an article in the Tidings, the Clerk will report in the monthly Clerk of Session report in the Tidings, a Congregational Meeting will be held sometime during the Learning Hour, and hopefully this information will be shared at a

Wonderful Wednesday program.

Marian Lowry made a special appeal to all Elders as leaders in the church to consider making an additional pledge. Response to this appeal is optional. This is an individual’s attempt to motivate the leadership of Trinity church to set an example of financial leadership during this

challenging time.

Student Intern Proposal - Linda Walker, Personnel Chair, made a motion that we hire a Student Intern this summer of 2012 to assist with various functions while Mark Stanley is on Sabbatical Leave. She said that while we understand the financial concerns we are experiencing at the present time, we do not believe that this is the time to ‘hunker down’ and cut back on opportunities to reach out to our congregation and to the community, especially with our Youth. There is currently $4,040 in dedicated funds to fund this position. This will more than cover the recommended stipend. Any expenses associated with the Intern’s responsibilities are expected to be funded

through funds already budgeted by Christian Nurture.

Dwight Christenbury sent a report with the following endorsement: “I strongly support the motion, for several reasons: (i) I believe that having an intern would go a long way toward maintaining a consistent level of educational and youth ministry programming. (ii) I believe that there’s also great potential for us to not only ‘maintain’ programming but also to bring fresh ideas and creativity to those programs, owing to the presence and enthusiasm of someone who is currently engaged in theological education. (iii) The presence of an intern would be beneficial to me personally and professionally as I temporarily step into the role of pastor/head of staff. While I would have training and supervisory responsibilities with the intern, I believe that those responsibilities would be less time-intensive than directly planning and facilitating programs. Finally, permit me to express my agreement with the Personnel Ministry’s assertion that we do not believe that this is the time to

hunker down and cut back on opportunities to reach out to our congregation and to the community, especially with our

Youth.” Motion was approved.

Bob Baker, Buildings and Grounds Chair, made a motion to relocate the Trinity Preschool sign to the front entrance – across from the Trinity Presbyterian Church sign where it

will be more visible. Motion approved.

Building Use Requests

1. Vacation Bible School - Sunday, June 24 – Thursday, June 28 2. Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra Summer Strings Program – Sunday, August 5 – Friday, August 10 3. Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra – annual auditions – Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary on Saturday, June 16 and June 17

All requests were approved.

Personnel – Linda Walker announced that Jim Norris has been hired in the custodial position. Jim will be working 25 hours per week and will report to Mark Stanley as Head of Staff. (Note: Please remember that on Sundays

Jim is a worshipper – not our custodian.)

Trinity Preschool – Ron Howard said that the Trinity

Preschool will be on holiday from April 9 – 13.

Mark Stanley will be preaching at the Easter Sunrise

Service at Jump-Off Rock this year.

Reminder – there will be no Wonderful Wednesday dinner or

program on Wednesday, April 11th.

Clerk of Session
