New Year

New Year is the time when a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count is incremented. We celebrate it in the same way as in other countries.

– It traditionally falls on January 6. It is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ.

Drowning of Marzanna

–This pagan farewell-to-winter tradition occurs on Death Sunday, before Easter. An effigy of Marzanna, the goddess of the winter season, is taken to the riverbank and thrown in the water. Participants watch her "drown"; with the passing of Marzanna, the ills of winter are forgotten and spring can return with warm weather and natural bounty.

–Smingus Dyngus is celebrated on "Easter Monday." On this holiday, it is a tradition to try and pour water on friends and family. In addition to catching people by surprise, it's also a day where groups of people get together and soak each other on purpose! It's thought that those who got thoroughly drenched were those who would be blessed with good fortune. They would be cleansed of all evil and illnesses.

It emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist, which was observed on Holy Thursday in the somber atmosphere of the nearness of Good Friday.

– Juwenalia is a student festival that occurs in May or early June. This event is marked by colourful parades, contests, games, and parties. Juwenalia is an annually anticipated event and has its roots in medieval times.

Halloween

It is a day celebrated on October 31 - which is exactly before All Saints. These holiday presents its origins in Celtic rituals, where it was believed that on this day a reality blurs the boundary between the living and the underworld.

• All Saints' Day is accompanied by the beautiful tradition of decorating cemeteries with thousands of glowing candles. On this night, the worlds of the living and the dead come closer to one another. We honor their deceased family and friends with memories, church services, and, of course, the flickering candles that bright graveyards all over our country on November 1st.

• It is a national day in our country celebrated on November 11 to commemorate the anniversary of the restoration of our state—in 1918. It is a non-working day throughout the country.

ST. ANDREW’S DAY

St. Andrew's Day, is a traditional holiday that occurs on November 29th/30th. It's an evening of superstition and fortune telling. On this night, young women can predict who they'll meet and fall in love with!

• On this day people (mainly children and teens) are fortune-telling by pouring candle wax through a key hole into water and guessing what the wax shape means.

Advent

• Advent helps to prepare us for Christmas through fasting, prayer, and church services. During this time, a special mass, called roraty, is held for church-goers.

Mikolaj's Visit

• Mikolaj, our country's Santa, visits children on December 6th, during Advent church services, or on Christmas Eve. He brings children small gifts to reward them for good behavior, but he may also remind them not to be naughty with their presents by indicating a switch.

• Every day of our calendar has a name of a Saint associated with it. On this day, people over the age of thirteen with the same name, celebrate their "Name Day." ("Imieniny" in our language). It's a special time for friends to stop and gather and typically gifts are given. You should always remember someone's name day and call and wish them "Wszystkiego Najlepszego!" Name Day originated when people started naming their children after Saints. Typically, they would choose the name of a Saint that had a feast day close to the birth date of their child.
