agricultural and heavy equipment technician

Agricultural and Heavy Equipment Technician• one-year certificate

• September admission

• awards a total of 600 hours of experience credit and prepares grads to write

first- and second-year apprenticeship exams for the Agricultural Equipment

Technician or Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship programs.

If you’re itching to work on farm equipment, highway trucks or

heavy machinery, Lethbridge College’s Agricultural and Heavy

Equipment Technician certificate will get you there in a hurry. Even

if you come with real-life experience from a family farm, formal training at

Lethbridge College will add to what you’ve learned so far. In 32 weeks – two

semesters – you’ll learn about suspensions, power trains, steering, brakes,

diesel engines, fuel systems, electrical systems and mobile hydraulics.

TRADES PROGRAMSOur trades credit programs are for those wanting to start a career in one of the trades, as well as those wanting to work as apprentices in their

fields. Once you complete one of our trades credit programs, you’ll have a vast new skillset which will give you an advantage getting that first job.

You’ll also have the experience of networking and working with employers during two different week-long practicums. At the end of your program,

you’ll have the hours and knowledge to choose to continue on to an apprenticeship or to start working right away. It’s the best of both worlds.

If the sight of cars in a shop makes you want to grab a wrench or if you’ve always

wanted a career in the automotive industry, Lethbridge College’s Automotive

Service Technician program is the perfect place to get your start. In just one year,

you’ll receive practical training in automotive systems and you will learn about everything from

simple components to advanced computerized vehicle systems.

You’ll get plenty of hands-on experience as you repair a wide variety of vehicles, from customer

vehicles to shop units to your own vehicle, using state-of-the art tools and equipment.

After a year, you’ll drive away from Lethbridge College into a good job, ready to put all of that

Wind Turbine Technician• 32-week certificate

The ability to harness the wind to create power is one of the fastest-growing

technologies in the world. As a BZEE-certified wind turbine technician from Lethbridge

College, you’ll be at the forefront of this initiative, whether you are working in southern

Alberta or around the globe.

The Wind Turbine Technician program is nationally recognized and designed to meet or

exceed the internationally recognized standard: BZEE certification. We’ll teach you and ensure

you receive safety certification on our own equipment and training tower located on our

campus. We’re one of the few places in the country where you can get this kind of training.

Once certified, your skills will be extremely marketable in this burgeoning industry; many of

our students are hired within days of graduation. Whether you go to work or continue

training to earn a journeyman electrician certificate, there are no shortages of

great opportunities for your future in this exciting industry.

parts technician

APPRENTICESHIPS AND WEEKLY APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING SYSTEM (WATS)Apprenticeship programs involve eight to 12 weeks of classroom training

per year. WATS programs involve one day of training at Lethbridge College

per week throughout the length of the program. Both programs offer a

combination of work experience and technical training along with on-the-

job training. You’ll work with an employer and our experienced instructors

to gain the best of both worlds as you work and earn money while training.

If one of our apprenticeship programs appeals to you, here’s what

you need to do: if you’re not already working in the field, find an

employer willing to employ and indenture you. Then contact the Alberta

Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board at 1-800-661-3753. Once

you’re registered we will have you on your way to writing your journeyman

papers and getting that high-paying job in three or four years, depending

on which apprenticeship program you choose.

If you like variety, working with people and staying organized,

the Parts Technician Apprenticeship could be the perfect fit for

your future.

Our Parts Technician Apprenticeship program will give you the classroom

training you need in subjects like human relations and material identification

as well as the hands-on experience employers seek when hiring new staff.

Parts technicians have opportunities to work indoors and outside, although

they usually can be found in storerooms as they handle stock and identify,

catalogue and order parts. As a parts technician, you’ll submit bills, receive

payments and prepare statements. You’ll also use your strength and

stamina to be successful in this physical career. Above all, you’ll be the go-

to person for wholesale groups, retail businesses or warehouse distributors

as you serve customers with your knowledge of parts for the automotive

sector, hardware supplies, machinery divisions and more.

automotive service technician

Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship• four-year apprenticeship

As an automotive service technician, customers from all parts of the automotive

world will be relying on you to diagnose problems, repair vehicles and light

trucks and complete preventative maintenance.

At Lethbridge College, you’ll get the classroom theory you need in subjects like fuel and

emission control systems as well as the hands-on training employers are looking for. You’ll

find success in this career with your mechanical aptitude, good hearing, eyesight and manual

dexterity. In addition, you’ll be sure to succeed if you possess the ability to keep on top of

new technologies and have a good understanding of electronics and computer systems.

After completing your apprenticeship, you’ll find yourself working in various automotive

shops and dealerships in southern Alberta or around the country. In a typical day, you

may perform scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, take vehicles for test drives to

diagnose issues or reassemble repaired mechanical parts. It’s an exciting future – and it

Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship• four-year apprenticeship

As a heavy equipment technician, you’ll be taking mechanics to another

level as you repair, maintain and overhaul industrial equipment and heavy

vehicles. You may find yourself working in a modern laboratory or outdoors in different

types of weather. The abilities that make you successful in this industry are your good

vision, hearing and sense of smell, all of which will help you diagnose and solve specific

problems. In addition, if you like working alone or as part of a team, if you can stay on

top of changing technologies and if you possess good strength and stamina (as you may

find yourself in some cramped or awkward working conditions), you’ll be sure to succeed.

Electrician Apprenticeship• four-year apprenticeship

• September, October, January, March or April admission

Whether you specialize in residential, commercial, institutional or industrial electrical

installations, and whether you choose to focus on construction, maintenance or other

types of electrical work, your training as an electrician apprentice will give you the

skills and experience you need to succeed in this field. As an electrician, you’ll use your

mechanical aptitude, math skills, ability to distinguish colours, physical strength, stamina, capacity

for precision, communications skills and creativity to get the job done.

Once you finish your apprenticeship at Lethbridge College, you’ll have gained the knowledge and

real-world experience needed to be successful in the workforce. You’ll know the ins and outs of

how to read electrical, mechanical and architectural drawings; understand how to install, replace

and maintain control equipment such as circuit breaker panels; be able to splice, join and connect

wire to form circuits; be capable of testing circuits to ensure integrity and safety; and have

experience assembling and installing conduits.

Welder Apprenticeship• three-year apprenticeship

As a welder, you’ll have a choice of practicing your craft in a variety of different

industries, including manufacturing, repair, construction, mining and oil; you’ll

also have the option of running your own business. At Lethbridge College, you’ll learn

about the different types of welding as you join and sever metals used for vessels, girders,

piping, beams and other metal components. You’ll also make metal parts for construction and

manufacturing and could find yourself welding parts, machines, tools and other equipment.

Your interest in building things, your good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, your

patience, your ability to concentrate on detailed work and your ability to work with little

supervision all contribute to your success in this inventive career. Your typical day will use all

your skills as you develop patterns, follow directions on blueprints or work orders, check for

defects and shape your pieces through welding.

The Carpenter Apprenticeship program at Lethbridge College will prepare you for

a rewarding career in numerous sectors of the industry. You may find yourself working

on residential projects, including roofing, building the framework for houses, installing doors

and windows or working on exterior or interior finishes. In commercial or industrial jobs, you’ll

build concrete forms, scaffolding, bridges, towers and more. You could also find yourself

working on maintenance jobs, repairing and remodeling structures of all kinds.

The skills you’ll bring to the job after your apprenticeship include the ability to read blueprints;

Agricultural Equipment Technician Apprenticeship• four-year apprenticeship

If you’re looking for a future in agriculture and enjoy working with your

hands to diagnose electrical, mechanical and hydraulic problems, Lethbridge

College’s Agriculture Equipment Technician program is the perfect fit. You’ll

learn to maintain, diagnose problems and repair or overhaul equipment such as tractors

and harvesting equipment.

To be successful in the industry, you’ll put many of your skills to use, such as strength to

lift heavy machine parts, flexibility in working hours, some experience in the agriculture

After completing your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills to analyze building plans to

determine the materials and plumbing layout needed to successfully complete a project. You’ll

also be able to cut, thread, bend, clamp, solvent clamp or solder pipe when needed and even

find yourself locating the best spots to cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate

those pipes. When you’ve completed a job you’ll also know how to test pipe systems for leaks.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRADES TRAINING Rounding out our offerings in the apprenticeships and trades are

Lethbridge College’s non-credit pre-employment trades training

programs offered through Industrial and Technical Training (ITT).

Trades employers are reluctant to hire employees with no experience

due to the complexity and high cost of machinery and equipment. Pre-

employment trades programs in Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, Carpentry

and Power Line Technician provide employment readiness and safety

certification skills to get you on your path to an apprenticeship.

ITT also offers skill development courses (Power Engineering,

Master Electrician, etc.), personal development courses (Basic Home

Renovations, Small Engine Repair, Basic Welding, etc.), and safety

certification courses.

Pre-Employment Electrical/Solar InstallerDevelop skills in solar installation and residential and commercial electrical installation. Subjects you’ll study include shop,

theory, blueprint reading and trade math.

Pre-Employment WeldingGain skills and knowledge to write the first year welding apprenticeship theory and practical exams. The pipeline

assistant component of the program also gives you additional job opportunities in the industry.

Power Line Technician/Power System Electrician You’ll gain hands-on skills and theoretical training related to overhead and underground distribution installations.
